Honorees are Ysaye M. Barnwell (FAS ’75), Charlene Mickens Dukes (EDUC ’87G, ’92G), Henry “Model T” Ford (CBA ’55), Margaret D. Garner (CAS ’86), and Ludwick Hayden Jr. (CAS ’66, EDUC ’68G). The AAAC Sankofa weekend begins at 9 a.m. Friday with the Apple Seed Project, a community service initiative that gives alumni the opportunity to share their time and talents with students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Sunday, November 11 @ 7 PM Zellerbach Theatre 18/19 SEASON 45 PROGRAM NOTES There’s a bit of the sorcerer in Béla Fleck (banjo), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Edgar Meyer (double bass) and their special guest, Rakesh Chaurasia (bansuri – Indian flute). Most musicians hope at most for proficiency in their chosen form, but these gentlemen move from bluegrass to Western classical to Indian classical to jazz, transmuting genres into something uniquely their own as though they’d gotten hold of the alchemist’s tools that legendarily changed lead into gold. In any case, it’s music that transcends description; ineffable, indefinable and very beautiful. The story begins around 1980 when Meyer’s friends Sam Bush and John Cowan told him about a guy they thought he’d enjoy playing with, Béla Fleck. “We first played together in Aspen, just busking, but we were pretty close pretty early. The thing we had in common was that both of us were completely comfortable talking about music 24/7 – playing, instruments, technology, the machinations of human beings involved, and any part of music” says Meyer. They played even more. “As players,” he adds, “we were at a formative stage, so to some degree, we were shaped by each other. Béla’s inventive, he cares about the details, and he’s willing to put rhythm above other things, to prioritize it.” And rhythm led to the next step. -

Giovanni Hidalgo
Giovanni Hidalgo Giovanni Hidalgo a.k.a. “Mañenguito” (born November 22, 1963) is an educator, percussionist and recording artist in the genre’ of Latin jazz. Hidalgo was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico where he received his primary education. His grandfather had also been a musician, as well as his father José Manuel Hidalgo “Mañengue”, who was a renowned conga player. Therefore, Hidalgo was raised in a household surrounded by drums, bongos, congas and timbales.[1] He received a conga for his eighth birthday which had been handmade by his father. As a young child he practiced and developed his speed and playing skills on the conga and on the other instruments in his house. Hidalgo would drum a tune with sticks and then play the same tune with his hands. Musical career Hidalgo auditioned and was hired by the Batacumbele Band in 1980. In 1981, he traveled with the band to Cuba where he met a musician by the name of José Luis Quintana “Changuito”. Together they were able to create a unique style of rhythm and ushered in a new musical era in Latin music.[1][2] In 1985, Hidalgo was performing with Eddie Palmieri at The Village Gate in New York City, when the legendary jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie walked in and listened to Hidalgo play. He was so impressed with Hidalgo that he told him that someday in the future they must get together and play. In 1988 Hidalgo joined Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra.[1] In 1992, he was hired as an adjunct professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. -

Opus comes with some incredible new features such as individual instrument down- loads, customized key-switches, new effects for the mixer page, scalable retina user interface upgrades for legacy products, a powerful new script language, and many more features that allow you to completely customize the sound of each instrument. It’s one of the most exciting developments in the history of our company and will be the launching pad for many exciting new products in the future. Using Opus and Play Together Opus and Play are two separate software products, anything you have saved in your projects will still load up inside the saved Play version of the plugins. You can update your current/existing projects to Opus if you so choose, or leave them saved within Play. After purchasing or upgrading to Opus you do not need to use Play, but it may be more convenient to make small adjustments to an older composition in your DAW loading the instruments saved in Play instead of replacing them with Opus. For any new composi- tion, just use Opus.
