Nurse Bullying Measure NQF Endorsement Status Not Endorsed NQF ID 9999 Measure Type Outcome Measure Content Last Updated 2021-06-30 Info As Of Not Available Properties Description This measure calculates the rate of nurse bullying at hospitals by using the Negative Acts Questionnaire--Revised - United States (NAQR-US.) The NAQR-US is a survey instrument that asks nurses about their experience with nurse bullying during the previous six-month period. It was developed by Simons, Stark & DeMarco. (Simons, S. R., Stark, R. B., & DeMarco, R. F. (2011). A new, four item instrument to measure workplace bullying. Research in Nursing & Health, 34(2), 132e140.) Written permission has been obtained from the lead author to use the survey. Numerator The NAQR-US survey contains four items that address whether the nurse has experienced specific negative acts at work, and if so, how often. The content of the survey instrument is as follows: Over the last six months, how often have you been subjected to the following negative acts at work (1=never; 2=now and then; 3=monthly; 4=weekly; 5=daily) 1. Someone withholding information which affects your performance 2. Being humiliated or ridiculed in connection with your work 3. Being ignored or excluded 4. Being exposed to an unmanageable workload Denominator The total number of nurses surveyed. Denominator Exclusions Nurses in managerial or supervisory roles Rationale Nurse bullying has been the subject of research studies for over 25 years (Patterson, 2007). There is empirical evidence showing that it has many detrimental Report Generated: Sat Sep 25 09:51:20 EDT 2021 | Page 1 Nurse Bullying Measure consequences not only in terms of the health and well-being of nurses but also in terms of the safety of patients (Aiken et al., 2012; Hastie, 1996; Hickson, 2013; Institute for Safe Medication Practices, 2004; McKenna, Smith, Poole, & Coverdale, 2003; Quine, 1999; Riskin et al., 2015; Rosenstein & O'Daniel, 2008; Wilson & Phelps, 2013). Despite this, many institutions either deny its existence or accept it as the norm, creating a culture of silence that impedes solutions to the problem (Gaffney, DeMarco, Hofmeyer, Vessey, & Budin, 2012). Please refer to the attached article, which I co-authored and was published in the May/June 2016 issue of Nursing Outlook. It highlights the results of many peer-reviewed studies which support the justification of this measure. (Castronovo, M. A., Pullizzi, A., & Evans, S. (2016, JUNE). Evidence The measure is important to reduce nurse bullying -- the prevalence of which is extremely common. According to one study, 53% of nurses report the prevalence of bullying as common or very common (Dewitty, Osborne, Friesen, & Rosenkranz, 2009). Similarly, a more recent study reports that 48% of registered nurses admit to being bullied in the workplace during the previous 6 months, with 35% reporting that they had experienced it on a weekly basis, and 28% reporting that they had experienced it on a daily basis (Etienne, 2014). Among new nurses, the numbers are even more significant, with over 72% of new nurses Report Generated: Sat Sep 25 09:51:20 EDT 2021 | Page 3 Nurse Bullying Measure reporting having experienced bullying in the previous month (Berry, Gillespie, Gates, & Schafer, 2012).
