Caldwell, Chair The popular preoccupation with celebrity in American culture in the past decade has been bolstered by a corresponding increase in the amount of reality programming across cable and broadcast networks that centers either on established celebrities or on celebrities in the making. This dissertation examines the questions: How is celebrity constructed, scheduled, and branded by networks, production companies, and individual participants, and how do the constructions and mechanisms of celebrity in reality programming change over time and because of time? I focus on the vocational and cultural work entailed in celebrity, the temporality of its production, and the notion of branding celebrity in reality television. Dissertation chapters will each focus on the kinds of work that characterize reality television production cultures at the network, production company, and individual level, with specific attention paid to programming focused ii on celebrity making and/or remaking. Celebrity is a cultural construct that tends to hide the complex labor processes that make it possible. This dissertation unpacks how celebrity status is the product of a great deal of seldom recognized work and calls attention to the hidden infrastructures that support the production, maintenance, and promotion of celebrity on reality television. -

Workplace loneliness decreased employees’ engagement with their jobs and, as such, decreased engagement had a positive relationship with organizational commitment. Also, the negative influence of workplace loneliness on work engage- ment was found to be moderated by coworker exchange, and employees’ maintenance of positive social exchange relationships with their coworkers was verified to be a major factor for relieving the negative influence of workplace loneliness. Apprenticeship Training Program for Clerical positions A partnership between Newport News Public Schools and Virginia Department of Labor and Industry 1 Purpose: The purpose of the Apprenticeship Program is to ensure the professional development of all clerical employees by providing relevant, educational & on the job training. Employees may earn increases to their salaries with successful completion of level requirements. Benefits: Some of the benefits to the staff will be: increased pay for a higher level of skills increased knowledge & skills no charge to the employee for coursework The school system will benefit by having a highly qualified work force that will ensure a commitment to customer service and organizational expertise. Who is eligible? Any non-probationary, contracted, clerical employee, who has been in good standing for the past 3 years, is eligible to enroll. “Good standing” is defined as having no write ups or Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and good attendance. Employees must have at least a high school diploma or GED to participate in the program. Participation in the program is voluntary. The employee must participate on his/her own time. If an employee chooses not to participate, he/she will continue to benefit from the standard pay scale. How do I enroll? Introduction It is widely accepted that capitalism is characterized by “free” wage labor. But what is “free wage labor”? According to Marx a “free” laborer is “free in the double sense, that as a free man he can dispose of his labour power as his own commodity, and that on the other hand he has no other commodity for sale” – thus obliging the laborer to sell this labor power to an employer, who possesses the means of production. Yet, instances of “unfree labor” – where the worker cannot even “dispose of his labor power as his own commodity1” – abound under capitalism. The question posed by this paper is why. What factors can account for the existence of unfree labor? What role does it play in an economy? Why does it exist in certain forms? In terms of the broadest answers to the question of why unfree labor exists under capitalism, there appear to be various potential hypotheses. ¾ Unfree labor may be theorized as a “pre-capitalist” form of labor that has lingered on, a “vestige” of a formerly dominant mode of production. Similarly, it may be viewed as a “non-capitalist” form of labor that can come into existence under capitalism, but can never become the central form of labor. ¾ An alternate explanation of the relationship between unfree labor and capitalism is that it is part of a process of primary accumulation. -

The usual disclaimer applies. 2 Introduction The world economy is experiencing a severe economic downturn. GDP growth is slowing down sharply and is expected to be negative in 2009 in the US, Japan, Britain and the Euro area. Unemployment is rising and consumer demand is falling, as the real economy is hit by the consequences of the financial turmoil. Recessions are times of “cleaning up”, when outdated or unprofitable techniques and products are dismissed and new technology is adopted (Caballero and Hammour, 1994). During recessions, the flows out of employment increase and the flows into employment fall. The intensity of these flows vary with age: in the US, young workers experience the highest increase in outflows and the highest decline in inflows. Old workers are less likely to exit but experience a substantial decline in employment inflows (Blanchard and Diamond, 1990). Therefore, it is especially the young and the old who are negatively affected by a recession. In many European countries and in Japan, where employment protection legislation and practices shelter permanent employees from redundancies, the brunt of employment adjustment in the recession falls on reducing recruitment, especially of the young (Gielen and van Ours, 2005)1. What is the expected effect of the economic downturn on the provision of human capital within firms? There is no quick answer to this question.
