Rehearsaltechtenyearannivers 2016 Rehearsal Tech Week for Studio West Dance Center at the Lincoln Center, Ft Collins *A few adjustments to times have been made. It is not a big difference but please check out your times once again to make sure you have the correct time. Make up is not required for tech week, however, it is for all three shows. Make sure costumes are in order by dance, labeled and taken care of. Label shoes and accessories the best you can as well! Check in through the ally between the Mulberry Pool and the Lincoln Center backstage. The front doors will not be open during tech. Learning Objectives: • Students will learn to recognize music and instruments of another culture. • Students will demonstrate rhythm through expressive movements. Activity Time: 20–30 minutes Materials: • CD player • Music from other cultures • Dance instructions Directions: Set Up: • Review your curriculum and research the music, instruments and dance of a culture the class is studying. Locate a CD with music from that culture. To research dance information, log on to the teacher section of the American Folklore Center on the Library of Congress Web site at www.loc.gov or check the Web sites listed in the library of the Folk Dance Association’s site at www.folkdancing.org. Day of the Activity: • Begin a class discussion by asking students what kind of music they listen to, what kind of instruments are used in this music and why they like that particular kind of music. • Have students demonstrate how they move to the music they listen to. • Play a CD with music from the culture you are studying, and ask students what group of people this music represents and what kind of instruments they hear. • Demonstrate traditional dance steps to the music. • Have students join in the dance, performing the traditional dance steps and creating their own.     Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993).
