RHYTHM NATION PAGE 1 of 2 Description: Students will explore similarities and differences between cultures through music and dance. Learning Objectives: • Students will learn to recognize music and instruments of another culture. • Students will demonstrate rhythm through expressive movements. Activity Time: 20–30 minutes Materials: • CD player • Music from other cultures • Dance instructions Directions: Set Up: • Review your curriculum and research the music, instruments and dance of a culture the class is studying. Locate a CD with music from that culture. Day of the Activity: • Begin a class discussion by asking students what kind of music they listen to, what kind of instruments are used in this music and why they like that particular kind of music. • Have students demonstrate how they move to the music they listen to. • Play a CD with music from the culture you are studying, and ask students what group of people this music represents and what kind of instruments they hear. • Demonstrate traditional dance steps to the music. • Have students join in the dance, performing the traditional dance steps and creating their own. • Robert Friedland: Investing in the Green Revolution March 25Th, 2021
Robert Friedland: Investing in the Green Revolution March 25th, 2021 Erik: Joining me now is billionaire financier Robert Friedland, best known as the founder and CEO of Ivanhoe Mining. But perhaps more relevantly to this conversation, Robert is also the chairman and CEO of Ivanhoe Capital Corporation. The private venture capital and family office enterprise, which invests in a lot of fascinating technologies that I want to talk to Robert about today in this interview. Listeners, if you didn't catch it in the introduction with Patrick Ceresna. Please be sure to first listen to my two interviews with Robert on the subject of greening the global economy on the Smarter Markets podcast, because what we're going to do in today's interview is to expound on that conversation. If you didn't hear that conversation, today's conversation isn't going to make sense. Robert, let's start not with those topics. But with you as an investor because your mind absolutely fascinates me. You wowed our Smarter Markets audience with the story of Camel Polo in the snow on your albino racing camel. So we kind of have this vision of Robert Friedland as the camel riding mining executive who sounds like an Indiana Jones kind of character. But you were one of the principal investors and creators of satellite radio Sirius and XM Satellite Radio. So I'm just trying to imagine how does a mining executive sit down one day and say, Hey, I think I'll take advantage of advancements in MOSFET transistors and, you know, invent Sirius XM radio? How do you know about all these things, and thorium reactors and all the other things that we're going to talk about today? Robert: Well, you know, I grew up in the 1960s.

  • Diggin' You Like Those Ol' Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America
Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. She was one part Bootsy Collins, inspiring listeners to dance to her infectious bass lines; one part Nina Simone, schooling one about life, love, hardship, and struggle in post–Civil Rights Movement America; and one part Sarah Vaughn, experimenting with the numerous timbral colors of her voice.

God has called Christians to go and make disciples of all nations, preaching the good news, and teaching people how to show Christ’s love to others (Matt 28; Mark 16). God has called us to spread the good news of his love to all people through our actions and words! To this end, Next Step Ministries is dedicated to helping your church be able to raise the necessary funds to attend one of our many possible causes. Within this packet you will find a sample of some of our favorite fundraisers, but please don’t stop here. Go online where you can find more information on raising money and talk to leaders in your church who are already involved in successful fundraising. Look for partnerships in your church with groups that have good ideas and connections but need worker bees... youth have a lot of energy! Build relationships with local businesses.
