ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED EPSILON XI OMEGA CHAPTER Chapter Meeting Minutes Solar Turbines February 18, 2017

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 9:32 a.m. by Soror Donna L. Cook, Basileus.

Pledge: Sorors recited the AKA Pledge.

Meditation: Soror Charlaine Carter, Chaplain provided the EXO chapter meditation.

Recognitions: Soror Christine Cook, Hodegus – Our Annual “Pink Goes RED” Day was acknowledged. Sorors celebrating February birthdays were recognized and they were serenaded with the “Happy Birthday” song. Visiting sorors were introduced. Soror Christine thanked the February hostesses for their assistance.

 Adoption of Agenda: The agenda was accepted with the addition of the Black History presentation.

 Approval of Minutes: It was moved by Soror Laverne Brown and seconded by Soror Clara Baity to accept the December 17, 2016 and January 21, 2017 minutes with corrections The vote was called. The motion carried.

o The corrections were: 1. Solar Turbines was spelled incorrectly. 2. Soror Khadija’s name was spelled incorrectly. 3. Attendance of special visitors Supreme Tamiouchos, Soror Danette Anthony and Omega Omicron Omega Basileus, Soror Marsha Dobson should be recorded.

Protocol Moment: Soror Martha Logan Soror Martha introduced the 2017 Protocol Committee. The following protocol procedures for the upcoming Debutante : 1. Sorors should line up in twos along the wall at 6:15 p.m. 2. The processional order will be Chairmen, Debutante Committee, EXO Officers, Golden Sorors, Silver Sorors and General Membership. 3. Sorors should not cross arms when singing the AKA National Hymn in public. 4. The chapter picture will be taken immediately following the Invocation. 5. Sorors will stand or sit in designated order for the chapter picture.

Officers and Committee Reports: Basileus Report: Soror Donna L. Cook  2017 Committee sign-up sheets are available. Please be sure to join a committee.  The Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Postal Stamp signature pages are being passed around. Each chapter must submit a minimum of 130 signatures. Please sign the petition and return the forms to Soror Deborah Davis-Gillespie.  EAF Committee surpassed the goal of $1,800.00 thanks to the generous support of the current Basileus, former EXO Basilei. Special thanks to Sorors Clara Baity, Latisa Carson and Dianne Joiner. EXO will present $2,000.00 to EAF which will designate us as PLATINUM Status!!  Thank you to Soror Helen Griffith for allowing EXO to use E3Civic High School for chapter meetings. Also, thank you to Soror Charlaine Carter for supporting the chapter during each meeting while at E3Civic.  It was moved by Soror Cassandra Clady that EXO should return to Solar Turbines for monthly chapter meetings. It was seconded by Soror Jaine Derrough. The vote was called. The motion carried.  Soror Teri Early suggested that EXO acknowledge Solar Turbines in the 2017 Debutante Souvenir Journal.  A Salute to Women Leaders will be March 12, 2017. Nominees must live or work in the 79th District. EXO desires to submit a nominee.  Soror Ja’Nice Davis-Winston and Soror Cassandra Clady were presented as EXO nominees for the 2017 Salute to Women Leaders. The vote was taken.  Soror Cassandra Clady was voted as the 2017 EXO Nominee.

Educational Advancement Foundation: Soror Irene Outlaw  Soror Irene thanks all contributing sorors who helped us reach our goal of Platinum Status!! In an effort to get a “jumpstart” on the 2018 EAF Platinum Status campaign, we are asking chapter sorors to purchase an HBCU (or any college or university of your choice) T-shirts for $33.00. The cost is $5.00-$7.00 over the retail price with the “overage” going into the EAF Platinum Status fund for next year. Soror Vikki Hinton will take orders. Deadline for ordering is February 24, 2017. The shirts will be pick up at the upcoming FWRC.

Correspondence: Soror Patricia Grooms Jones  Soror Patricia Grooms read the correspondence. Thank you cards were received from Soror Marsha Dobson, Omega Omicron Omega Basileus and Soror Lynn Shipley.

Budget and Finance

2015 Audit: Soror Mary Castleberry  Soror Angela Monteilh completed EXO’s 2015 Audit. There were sixty corrections needed. A committee consisting of former and present financial officers must meet to clear the corrections. After all corrections are cleared, Soror Angela will redo the Audit.

Percunious Grammateus: Soror Dianne Joiner Report is attached.

Tamiouchos: Sorors Emma Turner Report is attached.  It was moved by Soror Carol Rainey and seconded by Soror Laverne Brown to move $10,000 from the Debutante account to the 2017 Community account. The vote was called. The motion carried.

Graduate Advisor: Soror Jaine Derrough/Lan Jefferson  Soror LaVonna Dixie will serve as Basileus for Mu Iota: Soror Kendra Boardingham will serve as Grammateus.  Sorors LaVonna and Kendra will provide Sorors Jaine and Lan with their Fall semester GPA and a copy of their transcripts as soon as possible.  Sorors LaVonna and Kendra were invited to the February 18th chapter meeting of Epsilon Xi Omega to be reintroduced to the chapter.  Sorors Jaine and Lan are required to begin a mentoring program with Mu Iota and EXO.  We are waiting to get a response from the SDSU Greek Life department as to Mu Iota’s interim suspension as to whether the organization can be recognized on campus with just two members.

Black History Celebration Presentation:  Soror Beverly Chandler presented an excellent Black History video about the nationally renowned “Hidden Figure”, Soror Katherine Johnson.  Soror Laverne Brown was introduced as EXO’s own “Hidden Figure”. Her remarkable scientific accomplishments were shared with the chapter.

 Upcoming Events o Parent Mixer – 2/25/17 to be held at the home of a parent. o Debs & Escorts will attend, “The Blue Door” on 2/26/17 at 2:00p.m. at Moxie Theater o Parent Appreciation Reception - 3/19 /17 at Francis Parker School o Deb Ball Rehearsal – 3/24/17 at Town & Country Hotel, 5:30 p.m.  Youth Fund Donations are needed.

 Roses are on sale for $2.00. The roses and note cards are to be given to Sorors who have been nice/loving to you.

Launching New Dimensions of Service

Target I Educational Enrichment: Soror Joyce Suber  Project ASCEND

 ASCEND o Soror Laverne Brown gave presentations at E3 Civic High School and Serra High School. She discussed her life’s journey in the field of science and mathmatics. o There will be a book review of (Silver Sparrow), by Tayari Jones on February 23rd at E3 Civic High School. From 1:00pm-1:40pm. o EXO will host a featuring Soror Sonia Sanchez on February 23rd at the Jacobs Center from 6:00pm-7:30 p.m. This is a private event, by invitation only.

Target II Health Promotion: Soror Phillis Denmon  EXO will observe “Go RED for Women” and “Pink Goes Red” in February in support of Women and Heart Health and in observance of AKA’s national partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA).  “Pink Goes Red” Raffle for the social media contest was held.  BoJo’s Place – 2/10-2/19 at Community Actors Theater. Tickets are $16.00 with partial proceeds going to the AHA.  AHA “Go Red for Women” Luncheon on 2/24/17. Twenty volunteers from EXO are needed to assist with the production of the Fashion Show portion of the event. Sorors volunteered.  Soror Donna Baytop purchased a table of ten. Names were taken of Sorors who wanted to attend the luncheon. Sorors will be notified regarding details.

Target III Family Strengthening: Soror Charlaine Carter  The focus is on “Childhood Hunger”. o We are asking for 100% soror participation!! Every soror is asked to give either financially, of their time, resources, etc. in the biblical spirit of the “Right-Hand Left- Hand concept.  EXO will have its own Fund Drive Page on Feeding San Diego Website, launching March 1st. Sorors are asked to donate on line.  There will be a Corporate Day of Service in May sponsored by Feeding America. Sorors are asked to volunteer.

Target IV Environmental Ownership – Soror Maxine Sherard  The installation of the Butterfly Crawl playground equipment is scheduled for February 25th. The installation of the equipment will include a dedication ceremony with a plaque commemorating this historical event. We have reached our goal of $2,000. Target V Global Impact: Soror Judy Pharaoh

 Sorors are asked to watch the documentary “The 11th Hour”, a video focused on the effects of global warming on the environment. o The video may be viewed on the following link: https://vimeo.com107108296 o There will be an evaluation of the film at the March Chapter meeting.

Second Anti-Basileus: Soror Ethel Daniels Communications: Patricia Grooms  The first edition of the EXO Newsletter, The Anchor, was emailed on 2/17/17.  The newsletter will be distributed quarterly.  It will feature newsworthy chapter information and activities.  We will be asking for photos, articles and information about sorors and EXO activities.

Archives and History: Soror Joyce Suber  We are preparing for our next EXO History Book. Sorors are asked to start writing their biographies.  The book will cost between $75-$100.  The book will focus on members of EXO.  There will be recordings of Golden and Silver Star Sorors.  There will be a special section for Diana Shipley, as past Regional Director.

Ways and Means Fund Raising Activities:  Temecula Wine Tasting o A wine tasting will be scheduled for early May. o Goal is to get 100 sorors to attend. Each soror should sell at least one ticket. o There will be a Coach Bus to provide transportation to Temecula.  Dr. Phil Show o More information to come  Boat ( Blower) o More information to come

Ways and Means: Soror Donna Freeman  Soror Cassandra Clady won $34.  The Sisterly Relations raised $80 with the sale of Roses.  The Pink Goes Red Raffle raised $165  Soror Kerri Everett won the “Go Red for Women’s Heart Health Basket
