Zelda Star The death of a loved one leaves us in a world of darkness. We feel unsure of what to do, where to turn. In the darkness, questions abound – the timeless theological questions of our people, and the urgent questions of the moment: “What do I do now?” “How do I make arrangements?” “How can my tradition guide me at this time?” As the practical dilemmas become resolved, we return to the questions of the heart: “How could this happen?” “What does Judaism teach me about death, about the afterlife, about immortality?” “How will I cope?” At no other time in our lives do we so need each other, our congregation, our community, and our faith. Yet, in all of our struggles we are blessed – Judaism’s practice and promise hold out a beacon of hope to guide us along our journey.
This Memorial Book is part of KAM Isaiah Israel’s ongoing commitment to perpetuate the memory of our loved ones. We offer it to you today in the hope and with the prayer that it will be of comfort to you during this service of yizkor and beyond.

The following reading is appropriate to be recited at Yahrzeit observances, the unveiling, graveside visits, or any time where you wish to honor the memory of a lost loved one: To this sacred place I come, drawn by the eternal ties that bind my soul to yours. Death has separated us. You are no longer at my side to share the beauty of the passing moment. I cannot look to you to lighten my burdens, to lend me your strength, your counsel, your faith. And yet, what you mean to me neither withers nor fades. For a time, we touched hands and hearts; still your voice abides within me, still your tender glance remains a joy to me. For you are part of me forever; something of you has become a deathless song upon my lips. And so beyond the ache that tells how much I miss you, a deeper thought compels: we were together. I hold you still in my mind and give thanks for life and love. The happiness that was, the memories that do not fade, are a gift that cannot be lost. You continue to bless my days and years. I will always give thanks for you.
When Should the Unveiling Be Held?
The setting of a stone over the grave may be done at any time between the end of Sheloshim and the first anniversary of the death. A service of dedication, or unveiling, customarily takes place approximately eleven months after the death. The unveiling is not a second funeral ceremony, but rather a vehicle for reaffirming respect for the memory of the deceased and a reminder that life goes on for the mourners.
How is a Yahrzeit Commemorated?
Yahrzeit is a Yiddish/German word meaning the anniversary of death. It is not a day for intense mourning but for remembrance. It may be calculated by either the Hebrew or civil calendars. Yahrzeit begins on the evening preceding the date of death and consists of lighting a 24-hour memorial candle and reciting prayers El Malei Rachamim and Kaddish. One usually refrains from social activities through this day. It is customary to recite Kaddish at the Shabbat services during the week in which Yahrzeit occurs. The following is a good template to use for a Yahrzeit, when the family is gathered at dusk on the evening before the anniversary of the death. A group says: At this moment, in memory of our beloved ______, we join hands in love and remembrance. A link has been broken in the chain that has bound us together, yet strong bonds of home and love hold us each to the other. We give thanks for the blessing of life, of companionship, and of memory. We are grateful for the strength and faith that sustained us in the hour of our bereavement. Though sorrow lingers, we have learned that our love is stronger than death. Though our loved one is beyond our sight, we do not despair, for we sense our beloved in our hearts as a living presence. An individual says: At this moment, I pause for thought in memory of my beloved ______. I give thanks for the blessing of life, of companionship, and of memory. I am grateful for the strength and faith that sustained me in the hour of my bereavement. Though sorrow lingers, I have learned that love is stronger than death. Though my loved one is beyond sight, I do not despair, for I sense my beloved in my heart as a living presence. Group or Individual Concludes: Sustained by words of faith, comforted by precious memories, we (I) kindle the Yahrzeit light in remembrance. Saying Yizkor
The custom may date back to the period of the Maccabees, when Judah and his men prayed for the souls of their fallen companions and brought offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem in order to atone for the sins of the dead.
What You Need to Know:
1. The Yizkor prayer is recited the morning of Simchat Torah, the last day of Passover, Shavuot, and Yom Kippur. 2. As with Yahrzeit, it is customary to light a twenty-four hour candle on the evening preceding Yizkor. No special prayer is required.Consult your own siddur for suggested readings. Alternatively, you may want to simply speak from the heart with a prayer to God. Mourners also often make a tzedakah contribution or pledge some act of gemilut chasadim to honor the memory of their loved ones. 3. While it is common practice not to recite Yizkor on the holiday following a death, one may do so.
