The drift back towards authoritarian monarchies, coupled with the new role played by measures to take in political migrants in certain European states (France, Great Britain, and Piedmont), contributed to a massive increase in their number and the generalisation of the practice of exile. -

Italian Jews, from their 1848 emancipation to the establishment of the race laws in 1938, achieved a degree of assimilation into the surrounding Italian society unparalleled in other European countries. The high level of Jewish influence and involvement in the Unification effort coupled with the continued, successful integration of the Italian Jews into society well into the 20th century lead to the creation of the concept of the italianita`, or Italian-ness, of the Jewish community in Italy. As the Fascist party began to cultivate a modern, political form of anti-Semitism in Italy, culminating in the establishment of the discriminatory race laws in the late 1930’s, Italian Jews failed to successfully respond to the growing dangers facing the Jewish community. Jews in Italy believed themselves inseparable from their non-Jewish Italian counterparts, and thus safe from the genocide in other parts of Europe. -

Jewish History (2018) 31: 263–290 © The Author(s) 2018 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10835-018-9285-5 Prospero Moisè Loria: A Case Study of Jewish Secularism in Liberal Italy LUISA LEVI D’ANCONA MODENA Oxford University, Oxford, United Kingdom E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In his will, Prospero Moisè Loria (1814–92) requested an autopsy and cremation and left his large inheritance to the municipality of Milan to establish a secular philanthropic institution, the Società umanitaria, “to enable all the disenfranchised poor, without distinc- tion.” Loria and other Italian Jews were at the heart of secularist activity in Italy’s culture wars, as demonstrated by their engagement with secular philanthropy, battles for cremation, and Freemason activity. By exploring Loria as the most generous nineteenth-century Italian Jewish philanthropist, along with his affiliation with the Alliance israélite universelle as a sec- ular Jewish institution in the Mediterranean, this essay shows how forms of secularism and Jewishness could coexist for Italian Jews and how secularism in Italy could include a com- mitment to a Jewish collective, and thus seeks to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the composite mixture of secular Italians and to a discussion of Jewish secularism in an international context. Towards a Preliminary Portrait of an Evangelical Missionary to the Jews: The Many Faces of Alexander McCaul (1799-1863) Abstract We live in a time of prolific scholarly output on the history of Jews and Judaism where most inhibitions about what are appropriate subjects for study and what are not have disappeared. This is especially apparent with regard to the study of converts who opted to leave the Jewish faith and community both in the pre-modern and modern eras. Labelled disparagingly in the Jewish tradition as meshumadim (apostates), many earlier Jewish scholars treated them in a negative light or generally ignored them as not properly belonging any longer to the community and its historical legacy. -

A Child of the Nineteenth Century by Alessandro Grazi Abstract The present paper examines the main biographical traits of the Italian author, politician and Risorgimento activist David Levi (1816-1898). Early in life, Levi abandoned the traditional religious spheres of Judaism but always remained attached to his Jewish heritage, as emerges from his oeuvre. Levi’s relevance derives from his constant effort to amalgamate Italian and Jewish identities in a context of increasing secularity. An analysis of his figure and activities, therefore enables us to investigate some crucial issues at the center of current historiographical debate, such as the nineteenth-century Jewish transition from a traditional to a modern identity, the discussion around the concepts of “assimilation”and “integration,” orientalist researches and the study of religions in nineteenth-century Italy, and the important role of Freemasonry and Saintsimonism in Levi’s secularization modes. An Atlantic Jewish Republic of Letters? Abstract Atlantic port Jews began publishing English-language periodicals, pamphlets, and books during the 1840s as a means to advance an enlightened, observant form of Judaism, identified in large part with Sephardic rather than Ashkenazic religious culture and history. Three of their Jewish periodicals, the Voice of Jacob, edited by Jacob Franklin, Morris Raphall and David Aron de Sola and published in London, the Occident and American Jewish Advocate, edited by Isaac Leeser and published in Philadelphia, and the First Fruits of the West, edited by Moses N. Nathan and Lewis Ashenheim, and published in Kingston, Jamaica, provide historical evidence of the persistence of Atlantic port Jewish networks of commerce, communication, kinship and community well into the Victorian era. Publishing in a non-Jewish vernacular, and printing almost entirely in a non-Hebrew alphabet, this new “Atlantic Jewish republic of letters” did not however represent a secularizing trend. Rhetorically, ancient Jewish wisdom was invoked as the foundation, not the antithesis, of progress. -

Jonathan Druker and L. Scott Lerner Introduction Between the two poles of Massimo D’Azeglio and Primo Levi this volume exam- ines the itinerary of union and disunion between modern Italy and its Jews. On the eve of the Revolution of 1848, D’Azeglio, calling on Pope Pius IX to abolish the Jewish ghetto of Rome and emancipate the Jews, explicitly connected the status of Italian Jewry to the project of Italian unification and nationhood. “The cause of Jewish regeneration,” he declared, was “strictly united with that of Italian Regeneration.” D’Azeglio’s dual campaign on behalf of Italian Jewry and Italian unification stands as the point of departure for this volume, which addresses these and many other questions related to the place of Italian Jewish culture and history in the birth and development of the Italian nation from the nineteenth- century Risorgimento to the present. Did the project of Italian nationhood depend on a symbolic union of Italian Jews, who sought full participation in the new state, with those non-Jewish Italians who viewed the abolition of the ghettos as a sine qua non of the “New Italy”? In other words, was modern Italy founded on a true universality, which was only made meaningful by embrac- ing the Jews as the bearers of difference? Or was it founded on difference and exclusion? That is, did the New Italy of the Risorgimento and Unification betray itself when it gave way to Fascism, the Lateran Pacts, the Racial Laws and the roundups? Or did the liberal patriotism of the earlier period evolve inexorably into these forms? Primo Levi’s place in today’s Italy marks the conceptual point of arrival for this volume (even though several essays within it focus on historical and cultural events since his death in 1987).
