NO. 4 MEN’S LACROSSE BEATS NO. 1 YALE, 14-12: In front of the largest crowd ever (3,430 fans) at Stevenson-Pincince Field, the Bears knocked off the previously undefeated Bulldogs. Dylan Molloy ’17 scored five goals and Brendan Caputo ’16 (pictured at top left) added a goal and two assists to give Brown its first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent.

NO. 3 WOMEN’S CREW DEFEATS NO. 1 OHIO STATE: The Bears defeated the three-time defending NCAA Champion Buckeyes in their opening race of the 2016 spring Olivia Santiago ’16 Peter Tarwid ’18 season. Brown claimed first-place finishes in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, and third varsity eight against both Ohio State and No. 11 Princeton on the Tigers’ home course on Lake Carnegie.

We are extremely grateful to our graduating student- athletes. The members of the Class of 2016 have been outstanding representatives of the athletics program and the University over the course of their careers. This group of men and women include All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, an all-time record holder, and All-Conference honorees. Many of these individuals are now listed throughout the Brown record books in their respective sports.

The past year also marked the end of Phil Pincince’s outstanding coaching career. Coach Pincince led the women’s soccer program for 39 years and served as the head softball coach for 14 years. Between the two sports, he captured 15 Ivy League Championships, Jack Hayes coached nine All-Americans, and seven Ivy League Director of Athletics Players of the Year. We are grateful for all of his contributions to our athletics program.

Phil Pincince (pictured on facing page) retired as Brown’s head women’s soccer coach after 39 seasons with the Bears’ home field renamed Stevenson-Pincince Field in his honor. In his final home game, Brown topped Penn, 1-0.

Cedric Kuakumensah ’16 (pictured on facing page with President Christina Paxson) broke the Ivy League career blocked shots record with a block against Georgetown (pictured on right). He finished his career as the only student-athlete in league history to record over 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, and 300 blocks.

After striking out 90 batters over 86 innings in his final two seasons, Austin French ’16 (pictured) earned a shot at the big leagues as the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the 27th round, 821st overall in the 2016 Major League Amateur Draft.

Kathy Flores Kathy Flores Rugby U.S. Rugby Hall of Fame Kathy Flores earned induction into the U.S. Rugby Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2016 this past spring. Flores, Brown’s only head coach since the Bears began varsity play in 2014-15, won four national titles at Florida State and also played and coached for the U.S. Rugby Women’s National Team.

Michael LeBlanc Skiing ECSC MacConnell Coach of the Year Michael LeBlanc took home the 2016 USCSA ECSC MacConnell Division Coach of the Year award through a vote of his peers. Michael LeBlanc LeBlanc led the Bears to a second-place finish at the USCSA National Championships, matching the best overall finish in program history.

Mike Martin ’04 Men’s Basketball New England Basketball Hall of Fame Mike Martin ’04 gained a spot in the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in August 2015 as a standout player at Brown from 2000-04 and as a rising young coach for the Bears since the 2012-13 season. Martin went into the Hall of Fame along with his father, grandfather, uncle, and two cousins.

Tessa Gobbo ’13 Women’s Rowing (Gold Medalist) Gobbo won a gold medal with U.S. Rowing’s women’s eight at the Rio Olympics, becoming Brown’s first American gold medalist at the Summer Olympics since 1932 and becoming the Bears’ third female gold medalist all-time at the Summer Games. Serving the community stands as an integral part of the student-athlete experience at Brown, and each year hundreds of student-athletes and dozens of coaches spend time working towards this central part of the mission of the University. Senior Celebration and Awards Luncheon Brown athletics held its eighth annual Senior Celebration and Awards Luncheon at the Providence Biltmore on Monday, May 23, 2016. Over 275 student-athletes, coaches, staff and distinguished guests attended the event to celebrate another year of success in competition, in the classroom and in the community. In its third year of operation, Brown’s channel on the Ivy League Digital Network continued to make improvements to its offerings, particularly in the area of multi-camera broadcasts. In 2015-16 as part of its more than 135 live broadcasts, Brown athletics produced over 65 multi-camera broadcasts, more than doubling its output from the previous years. The Bears simulcast nine of their ILDN-produced broadcasts on ESPN3, giving multiple Brown teams exposure on a national platform.

Brown also produced over 50 highlights packages and features. Some of the Bears’ video feature subjects included the retirement of 39-year head women’s soccer coach Phil Pincince, Cedric Kuakumensah’s ’16 setting of the Ivy League men’s basketball blocks record, Brown women’s basketball’s partnership with the Brown University Oncology Group, and the Bears’ kickoff event at the Vartan Gregorian Elementary School.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION, RECREATION, AND CLUB SPORTS

Brown University recreation caters to individuals of all interests and abilities. Brown’s qualified staff is committed to enhancing the physical, mental, and emotional development and wellness of members of the Brown community.

The recreation department offers a variety of activities in the form of fitness, intramural programs, and club sports. Over 35 group fitness classes are offered per week in the areas of aerobics, fitness, and mind/body. The group fitness programs average over 2,700 participants per year. Brown’s 25 intramural programs provide a multitude of team, dual, individual, and special event activities to over 3,500 registered participants within the Brown community. The 33 club sports teams service over 835 student-athletes, striving for an organized, structured, and competitive environment on campus.

The Bears achieved a rare feat in 2015-16, placing two student-athletes in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd section within a span of four months. Cedric Kuakumensah ’16, the Ivy League’s all-time leader in blocked shots, earned recognition in the section in the March 14, 2016 edition, and Dylan Molloy ’17, the 2016 Tewaaraton Award winner, gained a spot in the feature in the July 4-11 magazine.

NO. 4 MEN’S LACROSSE BEATS NO. 1 YALE, 14-12: In front of the largest crowd ever (3,430 fans) at Stevenson-Pincince Field, the Bears knocked off the previously undefeated Bulldogs. Dylan Molloy ’17 scored five goals and Brendan Caputo ’16 (pictured at top left) added a goal and two assists to give Brown its first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent.

NO. 3 WOMEN’S CREW DEFEATS NO. 1 OHIO STATE: The Bears defeated the three-time defending NCAA Champion Buckeyes in their opening race of the 2016 spring Olivia Santiago ’16 Peter Tarwid ’18 season. Brown claimed first-place finishes in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, and third varsity eight against both Ohio State and No. 11 Princeton on the Tigers’ home course on Lake Carnegie.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY TOPS NO. 1 PROVIDENCE, 4-3 (OT): Playing against the defending NCAA Champions, the Bears topped the Friars in overtime in the Mayor’s Cup finale at Meehan Auditorium.
