Ned Willig ’16 (First) Katie Liebowitz ’16 Zach Emrich ’18 (Fifth) NO. 4 MEN’S LACROSSE BEATS NO. 1 YALE, 14-12: In front of the largest crowd ever (3,430 fans) at Stevenson-Pincince Field, the Bears knocked off the previously undefeated Bulldogs. Dylan Molloy ’17 scored five goals and Brendan Caputo ’16 (pictured at top left) added a goal and two assists to give Brown its first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent. NO. 3 WOMEN’S CREW DEFEATS NO. 1 OHIO STATE: The Bears defeated the three-time defending NCAA Champion Buckeyes in their opening race of the 2016 spring Olivia Santiago ’16 Peter Tarwid ’18 season. Brown claimed first-place finishes in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, and third varsity eight against both Ohio State and No. 11 Princeton on the Tigers’ home course on Lake Carnegie. MEN’S ICE HOCKEY TOPS NO. 1 PROVIDENCE, 4-3 (OT): Playing against the defending NCAA Champions, the Bears topped the Friars in overtime in the Mayor’s Cup finale at Meehan Auditorium. Tommy Marchin ’19 (pictured, No. 26) scored the game-winning goal at the 2:30 mark of the overtime period as Brown earned its first win over a No. 1 team since the 2012-13 season. The members of the Class of 2016 have been outstanding representatives of the athletics program and the University over the course of their careers. This group of men and women include All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, an Ivy League all-time record holder, and All-Conference honorees. Many of these individuals are now listed throughout the Brown record books in their respective sports. The past year also marked the end of Phil Pincince’s outstanding coaching career. Coach Pincince led the women’s soccer program for 39 years and served as the head softball coach for 14 years. Between the two sports, he captured 15 Ivy League Championships, Jack Hayes coached nine All-Americans, and seven Ivy League Director of Athletics Players of the Year. We are grateful for all of his contributions to our athletics program. 1 Phil Pincince BY THE NUMBERS: SOCCER & SOFTBALL 39 Seasons 1,084 Games Coached 593-435-56 Overall Record 122 All-Ivy Student-Athletes 35 Academic All-Ivy Student-Athletes 15 Ivy League Titles 9 All-Americans 7 Ivy League Players of the Year YEAR IN REVIEW FALL HIGHLIGHTS Phil Pincince (pictured on facing page) retired as Brown’s head women’s soccer coach after 39 seasons with the Bears’ home field renamed Stevenson-Pincince Field in his honor. In his final home game, Brown topped Penn, 1-0. Brown football and head coach Phil Estes (pictured at top) captured the 100th Governor’s Cup game behind a 41-31 win over Rhode Island with Governor Gina Raimondo on hand to present the cup. Natalie Schudrowitz ’18 (pictured) qualified for the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championships and earned All-America honors as she placed 23rd out of a field of 254 runners. In its second season as a varsity program, Brown women’s rugby hosted the inaugural NCWVRA National Championship. The Bears (pictured) advanced to the quarterfinals of the first edition of the tournament. Men’s water polo (pictured at bottom) won its second straight CWPA Northern Division Tournament title with a 14-13 win over Harvard in sudden death overtime. WINTER HIGHLIGHTS Cedric Kuakumensah ’16 (pictured on facing page with President Christina Paxson) broke the Ivy League career blocked shots record with a block against Georgetown (pictured on right). He finished his career as the only student-athlete in league history to record over 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, and 300 blocks. Nick Lappin ’16 (pictured at top) and Mark Naclerio ’16 each eclipsed the 100-point mark for their careers as Bears and helped the men’s ice hockey team earn a win and tie at the inaugural Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Brown gymnastics (pictured) set a program record for team score as the Bears notched a 195.175 in its prelimi- nary session at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships, advancing to team finals for the second time in school history. For the second straight year, Brown hosted a “Beauty and the Beast” meet with the Bears’ wrestling and gymnastics teams competing alongside one another before an enthralled audience at the Pizzitola Sports Center. After striking out 90 batters over 86 innings in his final two seasons, Austin French ’16 (pictured) earned a shot at the big leagues as the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the 27th round, 821st overall in the 2016 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Brown men’s crew’s (pictured) first varsity eight earned a bronze medal at the Eastern Sprints and finished in sixth place going up against the nation’s best at the IRA National Championships. Brown women’s crew won the team points trophy at the Ivy League Championship for the third straight year and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the 20th straight season as one of three programs to compete in all 20 NCAA Championships.
