Jimmy Pedro is the most successful US Judo coach in the history of the sport. Earning two bronze medals the Olympic Games(1996, 2004) & three world medals(1991,1995,1999). As a world renowned coach, his success at the 2012 & 2016 Olympic Games led to the victories of Kayla Harrison earning back-to-back gold medals, Ronda Rousey wining bronze medal in 2008 and Travis Stevens earning a silver medal in 2016-well known from the previous edition of the camp. „Brother Olympic Camp –Stars of the Games”- third time in Poland. Kayla Harrison Promoted to 6Th Degree Black Belt
Kayla is the only American to win a gold medal at the Olympics in judo. She did this in 2012 at the London Games. In 2016 when she repeated her victory, winning a gold medal at the Rio Games. Her second victory came about a month after I had accepted the position of Chair of the US Judo Association’s, National Promotion Board following my tenure as their President. Our promotion board was revamped with the additions of four former Olympians including Lynn Roethke, as Vice Chair who took a silver medal in 1988 and Jason Morris who took a silver medal in 1992. Knowing Kayla for more than a decade, I immediately thought that if she were Japanese, they would make her a godan (5th degree black belt for winning one gold medal). Since she won two, I suggested to our promotion board that we do something unprecedented and batsugun her (jump promotion) directly rokudan (6th degree black belt) a rank which the practitioner has an option to wear red and white paneled belt to signify they are the equivalent of Ph.D. in Judo. The promotion board voted in favor of my idea which was ratified unanimously by the USJA’s Board of Directors where another former Olympian serves as Vice President. So, I contacted Jimmy Pedro her longtime coach with the good news. He was elated and asked for us to send it to him for presentation which he did at a rally with Nancy Kerrigan in the Boston area where they both reside. Kayla is indeed a living example of Jigoro Kano’s principals in terms of thriving to be a fine person of excellent character.

She left home, said goodbye to her family and friends, and moved 850 miles away to train. She finished high school online. No senior prom. No graduation ceremony. It's a lot to give up. For most people the Olympic dream never comes to pass. For Kayla Harrison, 20, it still has not arrived. However, in 2010, her sacrifices started to make a difference. Harrison, who is originally from Middletown, Ohio, found herself standing on a platform at the 2010 World Judo Championships, accepting a hard-earned gold medal. She was only the fourth American in history to capture the world judo title. But it didn't stop there. Kayla continued her winning ways, finishing 2010 as the top medal winner on the planet. She blasted into 2011, well on her way to an Olympic berth, winning gold at the Pan American Judo Championships and capturing her sixth U.S. senior national title. Meanwhile, Travis Stevens, who hails from Tacoma, Wash., is on his way to representing the United States again, this time in the 2012 Olympics. He's been there before, fighting in the 2008 Olympic Games. He didn't medal, but in 2012 things might be different. Stevens won a silver medal at the Pan American Judo Championships this year, and that is hardly the top of his game.

You can follow him by liking his Facebook page, Judo World Tour - The Globetrotting Judoka. 1 JMJC Newsletter Issue 25 Jason Morris Honored at NY Open New York, NY - A USA Judo and New York Athletic Club (NYAC) legend, Jason Morris received the prestigious "Lifetime Achievement Award" on March 26, 2017 at the historic NYAC. Morris was on hand at the historic club to coach the USA Men's team at the 34th NY Open when, during a break in the action, he was surprised with the ceremony to celebrate his phenomenal achievements in the sport of judo. 2017 also represents the 25th anniversary of Morris' Olympic glory in Barcelona as well as his father's Bernie's untimely death, 9 days following Jason's victory. Morris enjoyed one of the all-time great careers for USA Judo, which included winning a silver medal at the Olympics, being a 4x Olympian (1988, 1992, 1996 & 2000), winning a bronze medal at the world championships along with being the head coach of the Olympic Judo team in 2008. His NYAC accolades already included becoming the first judoka inducted in its Hall of Fame, being named as its best overall athlete in 1993 and winning the NYAC's first Olympic judo medal in 1992.
