OFFICIAL UPDATES TO ICD-10

The following pages include the official changes to the tabular list, instruction manual and alphabetical index of ICD-10. These changes were approved in principle at the HoC meeting in Washington DC, October 2001. Each change has been uniquely identified and the source for each change has been indicated. The implementation date has also been documented.

(Note: Every effort has been made in the following pages to reproduce the content of the ICD-10 in the same format as the published volumes. Page references have not been used in all instances since these do not apply to electronic versions of the Classification. Additions/changes have been indicated through the use of instructions, underline and strikeout).

(URC: 0106)

The medical practitioner or other qualified certifier should use his or her clinical Add text judgement in completing the medical certificate of cause of death. Automated systems must not include lists or other prompts to guide the certifier as these necessarily limit the range of diagnoses and therefore have an adverse effect on the accuracy and usefulness of the report.

The expression “highly improbable”…the following relationships should be regarded as “highly improbable”:

Add new item (a) (a) any infectious disease may be accepted as “due to” disorders of the immune mechanism such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease or AIDS;

Renumber existing (b) an infectious or parasitic disease (A00-B99) reported as “due to” any disease item (a) to item (b) outside this chapter, except that: and revise as . any infectious disease may be accepted as “due to” disorders of the immune indicated mechanism such as human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] disease or AIDS; immunosuppression by chemicals (chemotherapy) and radiation. Any infectious disease classified to A00-B19 or B25-B64 reported as “due to” a malignant neoplasm will also be an acceptable sequence.

Renumber existing (c) a malignant neoplasm reported as “due to” any other disease, except human items as immunodeficiency virus [HIV] disease; appropriate (d) haemophilia….. (and so on….)
