1.0 K-ForCE Baseball Scoring

K-ForCE is a baseball/softball scoring program for PocketPC. If you know how to score a game on paper, and you are familiar with the PocketPC operating system, then you'll be able to start using K-ForCE right after the installation. If, however, you are just getting started with scoring baseball and the PocketPC, don't worry, you will be able to pick it up in no time at all. It's easy to score a baseball game; and it's even easier with Pointstreak K-ForCE.

2.0 Main Window

2.1 The Lineup

The four columns on the left are for player information. Player number, name, position and inning the player entered the game. To the right of the player information are the 'At Bat' or 'Scoring' boxes. The player information boxes are grouped in three rows per scoring box. These additional boxes are for player substitutions.

Tip: Enter the player information from left to right. This is because the team information is retained from previously scored games; and player names are associated with the player's number (not the other way around).

2.1.1 Substitutions

Entering substitute players is as easy as entering the starting lineup. Although there are only three player information rows per at-bat, more substitutions may be entered by using the scroll triangles that appear once all three player information rows are filled in. K-ForCE can accommodate up to sixteen players per at bat row.

Substitute batters are entered as a special position 'Pinch Hitter'. Once the position is entered, the current inning should appear automatically. You may view/change the substitution details by holding down the stylus on the substitute player information. A 'context menu' will appear, allowing you to bring up a window with the substitution details.

Substitute runners, or 'Pinch Runners', are handled in much the same way as substitute hitters.

Defensive substitutions are handled in the same way as the starting lineup. After a substitute hitter or runner enters the game, a defensive substitution should be made when the team starts their defensive part of the inning (or the top of the next inning). Do this even when a player is merely changing positions.

Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 2 of 76 2.2 At Bats

The at bat area displays a summary of each player's at bat. A line is drawn for each base the player reached safely. At the top is the play summary. This is usually how the player reached base or how the player was put out. If the batter (or runner) was put out, a circled number indicates which out. And in the lower right are five boxes shaded to indicate the ball/strike .

2.3 Scoreboard

The scoreboard can be displayed by selecting Scoreboard from the View menu. This is a standard baseball scoreboard, giving an inning by inning scoring summary as wells as runs, hits, and errors.

2.4 Inning Totals

Select 'Inning Totals' from the view menu to display totals and view the opposing team's . This is also where pitching substitutions can be made.

At the bottom of a traditional scoresheet is a place where the can be totaled. There's a place for Runs, Hits, Errors and the number of runner left on Base. Also, along the left column, is an area for entering the opposing team's pitchers. It is entered on the opposing scoresheet since this is where the information comes from to determine pitching statistics.

K-ForCE exposes this view as a quick way of seeing an inning by inning breakdown of the offense. More important, however, is the ability to quickly enter pitching substitutions. As you'll notice, there is no place for the position or inning. The is presumed; and the inning is automatically filled in at the time of the substitution. This information can be changed, of course, by holding down the stylus on the substituted pitcher and selecting 'Substitution Details...'

2.5 Home Team/Visiting Team

To toggle scoresheet between the home team and visiting team, just select the team from the View menu. The background colors change when the switch is made. Also, the title of the main window changes to reflect the currently displayed team.

Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 3 of 76 2.6 Inning Numbers

The heading row at the top of the scoresheet indicates the inning. The column heading may be changed to indicate the same inning is scored in multiple columns. To do this, just tap the inning number and change it to be the same as the column just to the left. When you tap elsewhere to accept the change, the column headings to the right will be adjusted automatically.

3.0 Game Information Window

From the main window select Game Information from the View menu. This brings up a window that allows you to enter Game Information, Visiting Team and Home Team.

The 'Game Info' tab allows you to enter Date, Time, Location, Score Keeper, Comments, Ump names.

The 'Visitors' and 'Home' tabs allow you to enter information about the teams: league, team name, team colors, player information, season files, and team short name. The first season file needs to be added through this window. All future saved games for a team with at least one season file, will give you an opportunity accumulate season stats as you save the game. Team short name allows you to control the name as it is displayed in the scoreboard view. Since the number of character in the scoreboard is limited, the default short name may not be the best choice. You can override the default short name here.

It is not necessary to enter player information in the Game Information window. Player names entered into the lineup will be automatically associated with the team entered in this window. If previous games have been scored, the teams should appear in the list. Once a team is selected from the list, the players from the team will appear in the player name list for ease of entering the lineup (in the main window).

Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 4 of 76 4.0 At Bat Scoring Window

From the main window, tap on of the at bat boxes, or tap the 'Batter Up' menu, and the at bat scoring window appears. This is where all game scoring is done.

4.1 Balls and Strikes

Scoring balls and strikes is as easy as tapping on of the five boxes. When two strikes have been scored, additional foul balls are scored by tapping the '+' next to the pitch boxes. Numbers appear in the boxes indicating the of each ball/strike. In addition, you can enter strikes with a tap and swipe up to indicate a , or a tap and swipe down to indicate a called strike. This leaves a tap and release indicating a swinging strike. This takes some practice; but is not hard to master.

4.2 Scoring a Ground Out

The most common ground out play is to first base. A ball hit to the shortstop, thrown to the for a force out is scored '6-3'. If you tap any of the infielder numbers an out is recorded (indicated by a circled 1, 2 or 3) and the fielder's number is inserted into the comment. Tap the '3' at first base, class then tap an empty area to accept the changes. A dash is automatically inserted between the numbers.

4.3 Scoring a Fly Out

One of the most common plays is a fly out. A fly out to center field is scored as 'F8'. To score this with K-ForCE, simply tap the '8' in center field. An out is scored and an 'F8' comment is inserted. Tap an empty area of the window to accept the changes.

4.4 Scoring an Out (Other)

Since a fly out is presumed when an outfielder is tapped, and a ground out is presumed when an infielder is tapped, how do you score a ground out hit to right field? Sections 7.2 & 7.3 gave the shortcut way of scoring the most common kinds of outs. But often there is no shortcut. To score the force out from right field to first base (9-3), tap the gray circled number to indicate the out, the tap the right field '9', then the first base '3'. One more tap accepts the changes.

Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 5 of 76 4.5 Scoring a Hit

Scoring a hit consists of drawing a line from home to first base and continuing to where the runner stops.

Some scorecards list 1B, 2B, 3B & HR along the right side of the at bat box. The appropriate one should be circled. Other scorecards omit this. On these scorecards, write the symbol next to the line leading to the last base reached safely.

K-ForCE follows the latter convention. To score a , just tap the square button between first and second. The lines will be drawn and a comment '2B ' will be inserted.

Note: A space follows the '2B' so you can finish by indicating the player who fielded the ball (i.e. '2B 7' would indicate a double fielded by the ).

4.6 Scoring with Menus

Along the bottom of the window are menus to the most frequently scored plays: BB, IBB, HBP, FC, K, KS, DP, E, F, SF, SA. Hold the stylus down over each of the abbreviations to see what they mean.

A walk will automatically advance base runners, and if bases are loaded an RBI is scored for the batter.

4.7 Navigating Between Batters

Once you've scored the out or hit, you want to move on to score the next batter. Tap the grey square at home plate in the small diamond at the right. This will take you to the 'batter up', even if it's a batter for the other team. The 'Next'/'Prev' buttons advance you through the order without regards to who's at bat.

Once you've scored a pitch or two, you might need to score a (SB) for the runner on first. Just tap the first base on small diamond at the right to score that player. Tap the 'SB' menu at the bottom and a line is drawn and a comment inserted with 'SB' followed by the batter's number. Tap home plate on the small diamond and you're back to scoring the batter. You can also advance runners from the current batter's AtBat. Simply drag a runner from one base to another. A popup menu appears giving you the opportunity to enter the base advance comment.

Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 6 of 76 5.0 Tapless Scoring

Much of the game can be scored without the use of the stylus. Since much of the game is scoring balls and strikes, leave the stylus in its holder and score with one hand. Use for strikes, for balls, for extra foul balls, to bring up the line up menu (/ to navigate the menu), and to select the menu item.

Scoring a third strike records a swinging (KS). Another tap changes it to a 'K'.

Scoring a forth ball records a walk (BB). Another tap changes it to an intentional walk (IBB).

5.1 Pocket PC with a Keyboard

Some Pocket PC devices come with a built in keyboard. With these devices, the keyboard can be used to score 'B'all, 'S'winging string, 'C'alled strike, and 'F'oul ball.

6.0 Substitution Details

K-ForCE tries to insert the details about when a substitution is made based on the current game state. But often, especially when scoring for fun, the scorer misses the substitution announcement and needs to go back and enter the substitution after the fact. The Substitution Details window allows you to tweak the information about when the substitution happened.

6.1 Pinch Hitter Details

The player’s name, number and type of substitution are entered from the main window, so they are not editable from this window. ‘Inning’, ‘Comment’, ‘Subbed for’, and ‘At Bat Count’ may be modified. The only item that really deserves more explanation is ‘At Bat Count’. If a team bats more than nine players in an inning, it is possible that a player may be pinch hit for during is second appearance at the plate. This is where you would indicate this. Usually, the only item that appears in the list is ‘1st of the inning’.

6.2 Pinch Runner Details

Pinch runner details are the same is the pinch hitter details, with one extra piece of information, ‘Base Subbed At’. You need to indicate which base the runner was subbed at. Again, K-ForCE automatically enters this information based on the game’s current state. But you may have a need to adjust this information. In addition to the 'Base Subbed At', the substitution may not occur at the time the batter reaches base. Use the 'Batter Count' to indicate the inning batter count: this is the count of batters who have completed their atbat during the inning.

Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 7 of 76 6.3 Defensive Sub Details

Like offensive substitution details, the player’s name, number and position are entered from the main window. The inning, comment and player subbed for may be modified here. ‘Batter Count’ is the number of batters who have completed their at bat during the inning. If the player is substituted at the beginning of the inning, this number is zero. The 'Pitch Count' is the number of pitches the current batter has received before the substitution (almost always zero). Most often defensive substitutions be made between batters. So unless there is an injury during a player’s at bat, the pitch count will be zero. You may choose not to enter any information here, as it has no bearing on defensive statistics (except for pitchers and sometimes catcher statistics are affected as well).

6.4 Pitching Sub Details

As with defensive substitution details, pitching details contain the same information. The only extra information you may choose to enter is the pitch count. If a pitcher is substituted for during a player’s at bat, the pitch count is important for defensive stats.

7.0 K-ForCE Data Folder

K-ForCE provides three different options for where to save your team data. K-ForCE Data includes player data, starting lineup and season statistics. By saving this information under your 'My Documents' folder, you can more easily backup your data and include the team information. Also, data in your 'My Documents' is synchronized when file synchronization is enabled in ActiveSync. A second option is to save the data to a 'Storage Card'. This is an easy way to share data between devices, including your PC (with a card reader). For backward compatibility with older versions, K-ForCE also allows saving this information in the program's installation folder (Program Files). This mode should be avoided and is provided for compatibility only.

We recommend using the 'My Documents' folder for your K-ForCE Data. You can use ActiveSync to track changes, and point K-ForCE PC version to this sync folder. This allows both programs to work against the same data without having to explicitly sync.

8.0 Box Score

The Box Score is a report of all of the Batting, Fielding and Pitching statistics for the game. It also reports the season statistics for a team which is accumulating season statistics. Each page can be sorted by tapping a column. Tap the column again to reverse the sort order. Each page can be copied to the clipboard for pasting into Pocket Excel or other program.

8.5 Season Statistics

Season statistics are the same as the game statistics. A team is considered to be accumulating season statistics if it has one or more games added to its season. This is done through the Finalize Wizard or the Game Information window. Select the team's Visitors or Home tab, select 'Season' in the dropdown list and add a game. When saving a game with a team whose season stats are being accumulated, K-ForCE will prompt to add the game to the season stats list. So only the first game ever needs to be added in the Game Information window.

8.6 Situational Statistics

K-ForCE provides some basic situational game statistics. Use these to determine batting, pitching and even fielding statistics under a variety of game situations like 'first pitch strike', 'full count', 'runner in scoring position', 'bases loaded', 'left handed batter', 'left handed pitcher' etc.

Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 11 of 76 9.0 Finalize Game Wizard

The Finalize Game Wizard is used to enter the game end time, declare a winner, assign winning/losing pitcher and other data at the end of the game. In addition to gathering additional statistical information, the wizard saves the game and season information and locks the statistics. Any further edits to the game will not be reflected in the statistics until the Finalize Game Wizard is run again.

10.0 Import Starting Lineup

One of the more time consuming tasks is to enter the starting lineup for a game. If your favorite team uses the same, or similar, starting lineup, simply import the lineup from a previously scored game. Even if the lineup is different by three or four batters, the lineup can easily be fixed using K-ForCE's cut/paste capability.

10.1 Import Roster

Another time consuming and error prone task is entering the player and team information. Pointstreak K-ForCE supports four different file formats as well as a Windows clipboard format allowing copy-paste from Pocket Excel or text editor. The team name will be inferred from the filename. The league name will be inferred as well, if the filename is of the form ‘League.Team.txt’.

The information imported from the roster includes the player’s jersey number, player name, batting side and throwing arm. The ‘batting side’ and ‘throwing arm’ will be defaulted to ‘R/R’ if omitted.

10.1.1 Comma Separated Values – CSV

Comma separated values, or comma delimited format is a commonly used text format for transferring data between programs. Nearly all spreadsheet programs know how to import and export these files, which usually have a CSV extension. The fields for this text file must be listed in the correct order for K-ForCE to correctly interpret them. Below is an example of the various forms of CSV that K-ForCE is able to correctly interpret:

• 12,John Smith,R,R • 12,Smith, John,R,R • 12,John Smith,R • 12,John Smith

Each of the above examples will yield identical roster entries.

Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 12 of 76 10.1.2 Text File Format – TXT

One of the most common file formats is simple text. Spreadsheet programs usually place content into the Windows clipboard as {tab} delimited. This is similar to CSV but using {tab} characters instead of commas to indicate separate fields. K-ForCE is very flexible regarding the data contained within text format. The most important factor is the ordering of the fields. The Pointstreak K-ForCE Game Information window displays player data in a list formatted as “12 – John Smith (R/R)”. K-ForCE requires text files to contain the player fields in the same order. Below is an example of the various forms of TXT that K- ForCE is able to correctly interpret:

• 12 – John Smith (R/R) • 12John SmithR/R • 12John Smith • 12{tab}John Smith{tab}R{tab}R • 12-John Smith-R/R

Each of the above examples will yield identical roster entries.

The text file format does NOT allow the use of comma as a field separator. This means names can be specified as “Last Name, First Name” and the comma will be preserved in the name.

• 12 Smith, John (R/R)

In this example, K-ForCE will interpret the name as “Smith, John”.

The text file format can also be pasted from the Windows clipboard into the roster edit window within the Import Roster dialog. This allows you to simply enter player information by typing directly into the edit window, or by typing the information into a text editor like Notepad, then copy-paste into the Import Roster edit window. In fact, copy- paste from Excel and other spreadsheets will work as well. The data doesn’t necessarily need to be separated into cells.

10.1.3 Retrosheet Format – ROS

Retrosheet is formatted as a set of comma separated values. This format has the limitation that no jersey numbers are supplied. Player numbers will be assigned sequentially starting at eleven. The Retrosheet rosters list players in alphabetical order; so import will yield the same results unless there is a conflict with an existing roster. Please visit http://www.retrosheet.org for complete information regarding ROS file format.

10.1.4 Pointstreak K-ForCE Roster Format – KRS

This is the same file format that K-ForCE uses to maintain team information. When importing a KRS file, only the jersey number, player name, batting side and throwing hand will be honored. This is most useful when migrating a team from one season to the next, where most of the information is the same. As part of the import process, a new league or team name can be specified; and players can be quickly added or removed.
