If you know how to score a game on paper, and you are familiar with the PocketPC operating system, then you'll be able to start using K-ForCE right after the installation. If, however, you are just getting started with scoring baseball and the PocketPC, don't worry, you will be able to pick it up in no time at all. It's easy to score a baseball game; and it's even easier with Pointstreak K-ForCE. 2.0 Main Window 2.1 The Lineup The four columns on the left are for player information. Player number, name, position and inning the player entered the game. To the right of the player information are the 'At Bat' or 'Scoring' boxes. The player information boxes are grouped in three rows per scoring box. These additional boxes are for player substitutions. Tip: Enter the player information from left to right. This is because the team information is retained from previously scored games; and player names are associated with the player's number (not the other way around). 2.1.1 Substitutions Entering substitute players is as easy as entering the starting lineup. Although there are only three player information rows per at-bat, more substitutions may be entered by using the scroll triangles that appear once all three player information rows are filled in. K-ForCE can accommodate up to sixteen players per at bat row. Substitute batters are entered as a special position 'Pinch Hitter'. Once the position is entered, the current inning should appear automatically. You may view/change the substitution details by holding down the stylus on the substitute player information. A 'context menu' will appear, allowing you to bring up a window with the substitution details. Substitute runners, or 'Pinch Runners', are handled in much the same way as substitute hitters. Defensive substitutions are handled in the same way as the starting lineup. After a substitute hitter or runner enters the game, a defensive substitution should be made when the team starts their defensive part of the inning (or the top of the next inning). Do this even when a player is merely changing positions. Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 2 of 76 2.2 At Bats The at bat area displays a summary of each player's at bat. A line is drawn for each base the player reached safely. At the top is the play summary. This is usually how the player reached base or how the player was put out. If the batter (or runner) was put out, a circled number indicates which out. And in the lower right are five boxes shaded to indicate the ball/strike count. 2.3 Scoreboard The scoreboard can be displayed by selecting Scoreboard from the View menu. This is a standard baseball scoreboard, giving an inning by inning scoring summary as wells as runs, hits, and errors. 2.4 Inning Totals Select 'Inning Totals' from the view menu to display totals and view the opposing team's pitchers. This is also where pitching substitutions can be made. At the bottom of a traditional scoresheet is a place where the innings can be totaled. There's a place for Runs, Hits, Errors and the number of runner left on Base. Also, along the left column, is an area for entering the opposing team's pitchers. It is entered on the opposing scoresheet since this is where the information comes from to determine pitching statistics. K-ForCE exposes this view as a quick way of seeing an inning by inning breakdown of the offense. More important, however, is the ability to quickly enter pitching substitutions. As you'll notice, there is no place for the position or inning. The pitcher is presumed; and the inning is automatically filled in at the time of the substitution. This information can be changed, of course, by holding down the stylus on the substituted pitcher and selecting 'Substitution Details...' 2.5 Home Team/Visiting Team To toggle scoresheet between the home team and visiting team, just select the team from the View menu. The background colors change when the switch is made. Also, the title of the main window changes to reflect the currently displayed team. The column heading may be changed to indicate the same inning is scored in multiple columns. To do this, just tap the inning number and change it to be the same as the column just to the left. When you tap elsewhere to accept the change, the column headings to the right will be adjusted automatically. 3.0 Game Information Window From the main window select Game Information from the View menu. This brings up a window that allows you to enter Game Information, Visiting Team and Home Team. The 'Game Info' tab allows you to enter Date, Time, Location, Score Keeper, Comments, Ump names. The 'Visitors' and 'Home' tabs allow you to enter information about the teams: league, team name, team colors, player information, season files, and team short name. The first season file needs to be added through this window. All future saved games for a team with at least one season file, will give you an opportunity accumulate season stats as you save the game. Team short name allows you to control the name as it is displayed in the scoreboard view. Since the number of character in the scoreboard is limited, the default short name may not be the best choice. You can override the default short name here. It is not necessary to enter player information in the Game Information window. Player names entered into the lineup will be automatically associated with the team entered in this window. If previous games have been scored, the teams should appear in the list. Once a team is selected from the list, the players from the team will appear in the player name list for ease of entering the lineup (in the main window). Pointstreak K-ForCE Pocket PC Edition User Manual Page 4 of 76 4.0 At Bat Scoring Window From the main window, tap on of the at bat boxes, or tap the 'Batter Up' menu, and the at bat scoring window appears. This is where all game scoring is done. 4.1 Balls and Strikes Scoring balls and strikes is as easy as tapping on of the five pitch boxes. When two strikes have been scored, additional foul balls are scored by tapping the '+' next to the pitch boxes. Numbers appear in the boxes indicating the pitch count of each ball/strike. In addition, you can enter strikes with a tap and swipe up to indicate a foul ball, or a tap and swipe down to indicate a called strike. This leaves a tap and release indicating a swinging strike. This takes some practice; but is not hard to master. 4.2 Scoring a Ground Out The most common ground out play is to first base. A ball hit to the shortstop, thrown to the first baseman for a force out is scored '6-3'. If you tap any of the infielder numbers an out is recorded (indicated by a circled 1, 2 or 3) and the fielder's number is inserted into the comment. Tap the '3' at first base, class then tap an empty area to accept the changes. A dash is automatically inserted between the numbers. 4.3 Scoring a Fly Out One of the most common plays is a fly out. A fly out to center field is scored as 'F8'. To score this with K-ForCE, simply tap the '8' in center field. An out is scored and an 'F8' comment is inserted. Tap an empty area of the window to accept the changes. 4.4 Scoring an Out (Other) Since a fly out is presumed when an outfielder is tapped, and a ground out is presumed when an infielder is tapped, how do you score a ground out hit to right field? Sections 7.2 & 7.3 gave the shortcut way of scoring the most common kinds of outs. But often there is no shortcut. To score the force out from right field to first base (9-3), tap the gray circled number to indicate the out, the tap the right field '9', then the first base '3'.
