1 Testimony by Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski Roman Catholic Bishop of Orlando Chairman, Committee on International Policy United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Hearing on the 2005 Human Rights Report of the U.S. Department of State before the International Relations Committee of the United States House of Representatives Subcommittee on Africa, Global Human Rights and International Operations March 16, 2006 INTRODUCTION Mr. Chairman and distinguished Members of the Subcommittee, allow me to thank you for this opportunity to offer testimony before the committee on the issue of human rights. Let me also express my appreciation to you for your leadership in promoting protection of human rights as a key aspect of U.S. foreign policy. I serve as the Chairman of the Committee on International Policy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Committee’s mission and major priorities include the advancement of human rights and religious freedom. I will summarize my remarks and ask that my full written testimony be entered into the record. This testimony of our bishops’ Conference will address: the importance and nature of religious freedom and its relevance to conflicts in the world today; and at the request of the Subcommittee, religious freedom and the status of Christians in some Islamic countries; and recommendations for U.S. policies to improve religious freedom in countries with Muslim majorities. Given the limitations of time and focus, today’s testimony will not provide a comprehensive overview of our serious concerns for religious freedom in countries without Muslim majorities. In addition, clearly our Conference will continue to refine and develop our perspectives on ChristianMuslim relations in light of our ongoing dialogue and experience.

On March 8, 1931, the Associated Catholic Charities was formally established in Miami and named the Catholic Welfare Bureau. From the beginning, the agency’s focus was to restore the dignity of people who were poor and vulnerable and help them return to self-sufficiency. They collaborated with other social service agencies to address the needs of Miami’s growing population, which by 1940 had grown to almost two million. The most pressing needs at the time included: family problems, out-of-wedlock pregnancies, juvenile delinquency, immigrants threatened with deportation, and children needing foster care. In 1958, The Most Rev. Coleman F. Carroll was installed as the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Miami. He appointed Fr. Bryan O. Walsh as Director of Catholic Charities. Fr. Walsh envisioned the future of the Church’s social development work as a partnership among voluntary and public social service agencies.

  • Oral Testimony at EPA Public Hearing on Carbon Pollution
Oral Testimony Cecilia V. Calvo On behalf of Archbishop Thomas Wenski and Bishop Richard Pates, Chairmen of the Domestic and International Committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops EPA Public Hearing Carbon Pollution Standards for Existing Power Plants William Jefferson Clinton East Building, Room 1153, Washington, DC July 30, 2014 Good morning. My name is Cecilia Calvo. I oversee the Environmental Justice Program at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. On behalf of Archbishop Thomas Wenski and Bishop Richard Pates, Chairmen of the Domestic and International Committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, I thank you for this important and timely hearing on an issue that clearly affects God’s creation and the entire human family. My testimony draws from a letter sent today by Archbishop Wenski and Bishop Pates to the EPA Administrator welcoming the setting of standards to reduce carbon pollution from existing power plants. The Chairmen support a national standard to reduce carbon pollution and recognize the important flexibility given to states in determining how best to meet these goals. Above all, these standards should protect the health and welfare of all people, especially children, the elderly, as well as poor and vulnerable communities, from harmful pollution emitted from power plants and from the impacts of climate change. The bishops speak as people of faith, not as technical experts. They are pastors in a faith tradition that teaches, as Pope Francis recently stated, “Creation is a gift, it is a wonderful gift that God has given us, so that we care for it and we use it for the benefit of all, always with great respect and gratitude.” Power plants are the largest stationary source of carbon emissions in the United States, and a major contributor to climate change.

  • Four New Priests Ordained for Miami Two Were Born in Colombia, Another in Mexico, and One in Hialeah
WWW.THEFLORIDACATHOLIC.ORG | May 2018 FLORIDACatholic MIAMI ARCHDIOCESE Four new priests ordained for Miami Two were born in Colombia, another in Mexico, and one in Hialeah ANA RODRIGUEZ-SOTO of the Florida Catholic staff MIAMI | Two are older. Two are younger. Two come from the same parish, Mother of Our Redeemer, another comes from a par- ish nearby, Immaculate Conception. One is a native, born and raised in Hialeah. The other three are immigrants who started out as manual laborers: loading and unloading clothing, moving mattresses, waiting tables. Miami’s newest priests aptly represent the people they will serve: • Omar Ayubi, 55, a Colombia native of Lebanese extraction who moved to the U.S. 26 years ago to join his family. • Gustavo Barros, 45, also a native of Co- lombia who came to the U.S. 17 years ago seeking success as a photojournalist. • Juan Alberto Gomez, 37, a native of Mex- ico who found salvation through the Neocat- echumenal Way, and his vocation at World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002. • Matthew Gomez, 27, a Hialeah native and local Catholic school graduate who always considered the priesthood an option, then discerned it as a calling. Archbishop Thomas Wenski ordained them May 12 in front of a jam-packed St. Mary Cathedral, during a ceremony brimming with symbols and tradition — and as emo- tion-filled as the new priests’ personal stories. ‘LIFE HAPPENED’ Archbishop Thomas Wenski, center, poses with the newly ordained priests outside St. Mary Cathedral.
