lifestyle SUNDAY, MARCH 2, 2014 Pharrell, U2, Idina Menzel rock Oscar rehearsals aving the nation’s No 1 song does not exempt an artist from Oscar rehearsals. Pharrell Williams ran through his Hcatchy hit “Happy” more than half a dozen times Friday in preparation for the Oscar telecast. He even shared the spotlight with a spate of stars: Jamie Foxx, Brad Pitt and Kate Hudson showed up to rehearse while he was on stage. All I care about is the fun,” Williams said to Hudson, who boogied in the audience as he practiced his dance-heavy number. A choir of high-school students and 20 professional dancers accompany his colorful performance. Also rehearsing Friday: Broadway star Idina Menzel, who’s set to sing “Let It Go” from animated film nominee “Frozen”; U2, which is nominated for its song from the Mandela movie, “Ordinary Love”; and rocker Karen O, who is nominated for “The Moon Song” from best-picture nominee “Her.” Menzel was awed by the technology that allowed the Oscar orchestra, playing off- site at the Capitol Records building, to coordinate with her live at the Dolby Theatre. “Hi, Bill, can you hear me?” she said into the microphone at conductor William Ross, whom she could see on a monitor from inside the theater. “I’m trying to get that telepathic vibe with you because I’m alone up here and this is my first time (on the Oscars). “You look very handsome,” she added. Karen O, front woman of the rock band Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, took notes from director Spike Jonze as she practiced her performance, “The Moon Song” from his best-picture nominee, “Her.” “Spike just asked me to hold the mic a little bit lower, so I need a little more level,” she told a sound engineer.

  • Food for Soul
Food for Soul A unique compilation of M ovies and Books to keep you on the edge! Part 1 MOVIES This is a beginner’s list of movies that will stir your imagination. We recommend that you watch these carefully, over the next few months and try to understand the director’s message. These are interesting, but difficult movies. They will force you to question some of your beliefs, and will help your thought patterns take on new dimensions. Happy viewing! 1. THE UNTOUCHABLES “The Power of Character” Kevin Kostner, Sean Connery, Robert de Niro Kevin Costner became a star as the legendary “GMan” Eliot Ness in THE UNTOUCHABLES, a slambang gangster saga with bravura direction by Brian De Palma, a witty David Mamet script and superb acting, including Robert De Niro as Al Capone and Sean Connery’s Oscarwinning turn as a wily veteran cop. It’s a terrifically entertaining and exciting movie. The story is almost totally fictionalized (Ness never killed Frank Nitti and had nothing to do with Capone’s incometax rap), but this becomes completely irrelevant in light of the beautifully crafted film’s accomplishments. De Palma, who has often been accused of emphasizing style over content, here has a strong and substantial script to work with, and his flashy direction meshes perfectly with the film’s flamboyantly operatic design. The script may not be true to history, but it’s true to human emotion and very moving, personalizing the battle between good and evil by concentrating on the impact that violence and corruption has on families.

RSU International Research Conference 2020 https://rsucon.rsu.ac.th/proceedings 1 MAY 2020 A Study of Figurative Language in Academy Award Acceptance Speeches Vorapon Mahakaew Faculty of Liberal Arts, Rangsit University, Pathum Thani, Thailand Corresponding author, E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The objective of this research was to analyze the figurative language in the Academy Award acceptance speeches. According to the principles of qualitative investigation, this study applied a descriptive and interpretative method of content analysis (Miles and Huberman, 1994; Strauss and Corbin, 1998). In the study, the source of data comes from the Academy Award acceptance speeches. Thirty-one speeches from 2004 to 2013 have been chosen for the analysis using seven types of figurative language: climax, hyperbole, hypophora, irony, metaphor, oxymoron, and simile. The theoretical concepts that guided the framework of investigation in this study are related to figurative language. The frequencies of the types of figure of speech were then examined and presented in percentage form. The connotations that were interpreted from the figures of speech were derived into common themes. The results revealed that hyperbole is the most found type of figurative language, using 18 times in 16 speeches. Metaphor holds the second spot for using 16 times in 14 speeches while simile is undiscovered. Following the metaphor is irony with 14 times of usage in nine speeches. Moreover, climax, hypophora, and oxymoron are also found in the study. Keywords: Figurative language, Speech 1. Introduction English is considered the most important language because it is one of the world’s top languages used by people across the globe.
