The next USSVI convention is right around the corner and this time, it practically next door. San Diego Base is hosting-- an easy few hours drive AND gas prices are low! But the big news about this convention is that it's a joint venture with the I SA-USA (International) Convention. This is the first time (in recent memory) that the International is meeting in the US and the very first time, a joint con vention is held. Just think! Smooze with not just US boat sailors, but Ger man, French, Russian and English. Our magnificent float, a scale model of the USS PhoeP.ix (SSN-702), is exposed to the elements witliout-shelter. After a great deal of research, we have decided on a 40 foot-long sea-van storage module that will be placed, for now, in Shipmate Walt Blomgren's back yard. There are two main reasons this is the best choice for a shelter. First, it is a total, complete shelter that can easily be relocated if needed. Second, the 40-foot length will allow for our other storage needs that we currently pay about $40 a month to keep in a rental locker- an instant cost savings. But an adequate 40 foot sea-van costs about $3,700 delivered. We just don't have that in the Base treasury now. Please, even in these hard economic times, dig deep and contribute to buying the sea-van as soon as possible. Remember, if you contribute to the Perch Base Foundation, your donation is 100 percent tax deductable! From the Base Officers, thank you. Page7 Chaplain's ... As Mike Bircumshaw announced, because of some unique circumstances, we are going to extend this deadline by two weeks to Feb 15 for this one year only. Your national board is in full agreement that this step needs to be taken, but we do so with the greatest of reluctance. Why? There are unique circumstances at play this year.

USS Shark (SS 174) Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet USS SHARK (SS 174) February 11, 1942 - 59 Men Lost After having transported Admiral Hart and other officials from Manila to Surabaya on her first patrol, SHARK, commanded by LCDR L. Shane, Jr., departed on January 5, 1942 for her second war patrol. She saw a torpedo, fired at her by an enemy submarine on January 6. In anticipation of a possible enemy attack at Ambon (Amboina), COMSUBASIATIC told SHARK to contact Dutch submarines at the harbor entrance of that island. On January 25, SHARK was advised that heavy air raids on Ambon might indicate an enemy landing force moving toward the island. Original Source here: http://www.csp.navy.mil/ww2boats/shark1.htm USS Shark (SS 174) Original Source here: http://www.csp.navy.mil/ww2boats/shark1.htm USS Shark (SS 174) Two days later SHARK was ordered to take station as part of a submarine group reconnoitering a major enemy move south through Molukka passage. On January 29, because another move toward Ambon was indicated, SHARK was ordered to cover the passage to the east of Lifoematola. The next day this was enlarged to include the area to Bangka Passage. On February 2 SHARK reported to Surabaya that she had been depth charged 10 miles off Tifore Island and that she had missed on one torpedo attack. Five days later SHARK reported an empty enemy cargo ship heading northeast. In answer to these messages, Surabaya pointed out that such transmissions contained little information of use in appraising the situation, and that they might very possibly reveal to the enemy a position to avoid.

On that morning the face of naval warfare in the Pacific changed utterly. No longer would the war at sea be decided by squadrons of the world’s largest and most powerful battleships. Instead, the strategic emphasis shifted to a combination of two more lethal and far-ranging naval weapon systems. The aircraft carrier would replace the battleship by being able to increase the deadly range of a fleet from a few tens of miles – the range of battleship guns – to the hundreds of miles range of bomb- and torpedo-carrying aircraft. In addition, the American submarine would be able to place a strangler’s grip on the throat of the Japanese empire that, unlike the German U-boats’ attempts to control the Atlantic waters, could not be broken. Some have said that the result of the attack at Pearl Harbor was fortuitous in that it forced the US Navy to look toward the carrier and submarine to defend the southern Pacific and the United States’ western coast. This argument overlooks, however, the prewar build-up in those two weapons platforms, which seems to indicate that some individuals were looking seriously toward the future and the inevitable conflict.
