Guide to the Flora of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia, Working Draft of 17 March 2004 -- LILIACEAE LILIACEAE de Jussieu 1789 (Lily Family) (also see AGAVACEAE, ALLIACEAE, ALSTROEMERIACEAE, AMARYLLIDACEAE, ASPARAGACEAE, COLCHICACEAE, HEMEROCALLIDACEAE, HOSTACEAE, HYACINTHACEAE, HYPOXIDACEAE, MELANTHIACEAE, NARTHECIACEAE, RUSCACEAE, SMILACACEAE, THEMIDACEAE, TOFIELDIACEAE) As here interpreted narrowly, the Liliaceae constitutes about 11 genera and 550 species, of the Northern Hemisphere. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. SRGC ----- Bulb Log Diary ----- Pictures and text © Ian Young BULB LOG 18..................................4th May 2016 Yellow Erythronium grandiflorum and the pure white of Erythronium elegans, growing in the rock garden, are featured on this week’s cover picture. Despite all the extremes that our weather is delivering the flowering of the Erythroniums is at a peak just now. In one of the sand plunge beds a basket of Erythronium hendersonii opens its flowers responding to one of the sunny periods. View across the rock garden bed to one of the sand plunges. Erythronium revolutum hybrids These are two of the Erythronium revolutum hybrids that I lifted for assessment a few years ago. I grew them in pots for a year then transferred them into plunge baskets last summer to allow them more space to increase. They both have well-marked leaves and interesting markings in the flowers so the main thing I am trialling them for is to see how quickly they will increase. Erythronium ‘Joanna’ One of the plants that has suffered a bit in the bad weather is Erythronium ‘Joanna’. The flowers of this group, growing in a plunge basket, have become spotted with some withering at the tips while others planted out under the cover of Rhododendrons are fine. I also notice similar damage on flowers of Erythronium tuloumnense, one of the parents of E. ‘Joanna’. Erythronium ‘Craigton Cover Girl’ There is no doubt that the flowers of some species are more resistent to the cold wet conditions and that resilience is passed on to hybrids. The Ustilaginales (Smut Fungi) of Ohio*
THE USTILAGINALES (SMUT FUNGI) OF OHIO* C. W. ELLETT Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 10 The smut fungi are in the order Ustilaginales with one family, the Ustilaginaceae, recognized. They are all plant parasites. In recent monographs 276 species in 22 genera are reported in North America and more than 1000 species have been reported from the world (Fischer, 1953; Zundel, 1953; Fischer and Holton, 1957). More than one half of the known smut fungi are pathogens of species in the Gramineae. Most of the smut fungi are recognized by the black or brown spore masses or sori forming in the inflorescences, the leaves, or the stems of their hosts. The sori may involve the entire inflorescence as Ustilago nuda on Hordeum vulgare (fig. 2) and U. residua on Danthonia spicata (fig. 7). Tilletia foetida, the cause of bunt of wheat in Ohio, sporulates in the ovularies only and Ustilago violacea which has been found in Ohio on Silene sp. forms spores only in the anthers of its host. The sori of Schizonella melanogramma on Carex (fig. 5) and of Urocystis anemones on Hepatica (fig. 4) are found in leaves. Ustilago striiformis (fig. 6) which causes stripe smut of many grasses has sori which are mostly in the leaves. Ustilago parlatorei, found in Ohio on Rumex (fig. 3), forms sori in stems, and in petioles and midveins of the leaves. In a few smut fungi the spore masses are not conspicuous but remain buried in the host tissues. Most of the species in the genera Entyloma and Doassansia are of this type. -

139 A Suspected Case of Stock Poisoning by Wild Onion (Allium Canadense.)^ F. J. PiPAL, Purdue University. On June 23, 1917, a case of live-stock poisoning had been reported by Mr. William Feldt, living about live and one-half miles southeast of Lafayette. Dr. G. M. Funkhouser, of Lafayette, who investigated the case, reported, in substance, the following facts: Five cows and one heifer were taken from a timothy pasture, which was rather dry and short at that time, and turned into a woods pasture on Sunday morning. In the evening of the same day, only four cows and the heifer returned from the pasture to the farm barnyard. The fifth cow was found in the pasture lying down and unable to get up. When the cows were milked it was noticed, with one exception, that the milk emitted a very strong and offensive odor and had considerably decreased in quantity. The breath of the cows was also strongly tainted with this odor and, in fact, it seemed that their whole bodies exhaled it. On the following morning the doctor found the cow left in the pasture in a complete paralytic condition, her temperature, however, being quite normal; she died two days later. One of the cows in the barnyard was, by this time, in a similar condition and died the same day. One of the remaining three cows stood with her head erect, the hair bristling, and refused to move. Another had a tendency to draw her head to one side and when compelled to move went around in a circle and fell down. -

Cut in 4 Tbs vegetable shortening and add enough water to make a soft dough. Knead to mix. Turn out onto a floured board, cover and allow to rest 10 minutes. Roll dough w. a floured rolling pin to 1/8 inch thickness, adding flour to prevent sticking. Prick surface of dough with a fork. Cut into 1 inch strips and then into rectangles. Sprinkle crackers with sesame seeds if desired. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. Makes 2 to 3 dozen crackers. There were comments on various issues related to the new NARGS website, not all complimentary, and then it turned to the Quarterly online and raised some points about which I would be very pleased to have your views. “The good news is that all the Quarterlies are online and can easily be dowloaded. The older issues are easy to read except for some rather pale type but this may be the result of scanning. There is amazing information in these older issues. The last three years of the Quarterly are also online but you must be a member to read them. These last issues are on Allen Press’s BrightCopy and I find them harder to read than a pdf file. Also the last issue of the Quarterly has 60 extra pages only available online. Personally I find this objectionable as I prefer all my content in a printed bulletin.” This raises two points: Readability of BrightCopy issues versus PDF issues Do you find the BrightCopy issues as good as the PDF issues? Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. Comprehensive Summaries of Uppsala Dissertations from the Faculty of Science and Technology 911. 33 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 91-554-5814-9 This thesis concerns the history and the intrafamilial delimitations of the plant family Colchicaceae. A phylogeny of 73 taxa representing all genera of Colchicaceae, except the monotypic Kuntheria, is presented. The molecular analysis based on three plastid regions—the rps16 intron, the atpB- rbcL intergenic spacer, and the trnL-F region—reveal the intrafamilial classification to be in need of revision. The two tribes Iphigenieae and Uvularieae are demonstrated to be paraphyletic. The well-known genus Colchicum is shown to be nested within Androcymbium, Onixotis constitutes a grade between Neodregea and Wurmbea, and Gloriosa is intermixed with species of Littonia. Two new tribes are described, Burchardieae and Tripladenieae, and the two tribes Colchiceae and Uvularieae are emended, leaving four tribes in the family. At generic level new combinations are made in Wurmbea and Gloriosa in order to render them monophyletic. The genus Androcymbium is paraphyletic in relation to Colchicum and the latter genus is therefore expanded.
