AMERICAN , 41, 2002 . 22, . 1 Preparing for Austin The 2002 Conference, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Town Lake in Austin, Texas, is rapidly approaching. We received a high rate of submissions this year and the paper and symposium proposals were excellent. As a result, the program line-up holds a great deal of promise. This year we are returning to a one poster session/social hour format. The poster session will feature 122 posters and will be co-sponsored by the American Academy of Forensic Psychologists and the American Association of Correctional Psychology. In addition to an outstanding collection of paper sessions, symposia, and posters, the program will also feature a mini-conference on Capital Case Litigation. The Opening Session will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7th and presentations will continue through noon on Sunday, March 10th. The schedule in this newsletter is the official schedule so please bring a copy with you to the conference. We do ask, however, that you check with our website - www.unl.edu/ap-ls/2002/ for potential changes to the schedule. The following are some special sessions that may be of particular interest at this Biennial Conference: Current APLS Presi- dent Stephen D. • Moving to Austin NEWCOMER’S GUIDE by Glenda Beasley for Habitat Hunters
Moving to Austin NEWCOMER’S GUIDE by Glenda Beasley for Habitat Hunters Whether you’re moving to Austin for a job, because your friends or family are here, or just for a change of pace, there are a few things to know about the City of the Violet Crown. 1. It’s a little weird. Get prepared to see a musician to break into song, a horse on the street or a smiling man in nothing but a thong happily riding his bike. The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Kimmel captured the flavor of the city well in hisfarewell to Austin song with Willie Nelson. 2. The locals go local. There is big support for local farmers, craftsmen and businesses. You can support these fine locals and get discounts when you purchase a Go Local card. 3. It’s the live music capital of the world. If you can’t find a live music venue on any given night, at the airport, or during happy hour, you’re not trying hard enough. Some of our favorite long-standing venues include: The Continental Club, The Carousel Lounge, Little Longhorn Saloon, Ego’s, Guero’s, Saxon Pub and the Broken Spoke, to name a few. 4. It’s an urban oasis. There are miles and miles of trails and greenbelts in Austin and the surrounding environs. Sources to find nature near you include the City of Austin, Travis County, Texas State Parks and the Habitat Hunter’s website. Another great resource is www.naturerocksaustin.org. Wildlife such as the bats on Congress Ave, raccoons, deer, armadillos, golden cheek warblers, and grackles are found in the city.

Circuit of The Americas features top-of-the-line garage and pit spaces and a variety of permanent structures designed for meetings, seminars, hospitality, and entertainment. Its centerpiece is a 3.4-mile racetrack that has quickly become a favorite among the drivers and teams who visit the Circuit every year. The most striking element of the track is Turn One, which features a 133-foot climb into a blind left turn. Some of the Circuit's 19 other turns are inspired by classic racing circuits around the globe. Every aspect of the track is state of the art, from team and spectator facilities to safety structures and the track surface itself. At the heart of the Circuit, you'll find the Circuit's signature 251-foot observation tower and the beautiful open-air Austin360 Amphitheater, PollStar's 2013 "Best New Major Concert Venue" and a 2014 "Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue" nominee.
