  • Great Instrumental
I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). I also listened to my Dad’s 78s, and my favorite song of those was Raymond Scott’s Powerhouse from 1937 (which was often heard in Warner Bros. cartoons). and to records that my friends had, and that their parents had - artists such as: (This is not meant to be a complete or definitive list of the music of these artists, or a definitive list of instrumental artists – rather it is just a list of many of the instrumental songs I heard and loved when I was growing up - therefore this list just goes up to the early 1970s): Floyd Cramer (Last Date and On the Rebound and Let’s Go and Hot Pepper and Flip Flop & Bob and The First Hurt and Fancy Pants and Shrum and All Keyed Up and San Antonio Rose and [These Are] The Young Years and What’d I Say and Java and How High the Moon), The Ventures (Walk Don't Run and Walk Don’t Run ‘64 and Perfidia and Ram-Bunk-Shush and Diamond Head and The Cruel Sea and Hawaii Five-O and Oh Pretty Woman and Go and Pedal Pusher and Tall Cool One and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue), Booker T.

Do You Want to Know a Secret?”: Mad Men, Episode 10, “Hands & Knees” September 29, 2010 By Tim Anderson | The most striking use of pop music in this season of Mad Men appears at the beginning of episode eight, “The Summer Man”. Opening with a montage of Don Draper after he has begun to reclaim his life we hear The Rolling Stones 1965 summer release, “(I can’t get no) Satisfaction”. Arguably their signature song of the 1960s, the Stones’ three minutes and forty four seconds of audible discontent is layered onto a somewhat rehabilitated Draper who swims and takes on writing exercises.

  • Mala Noche: the Use of Music Throughout the Sonambulo Comic Book Series
MALA NOCHE: THE USE OF MUSIC THROUGHOUT THE SONAMBULO COMIC BOOK SERIES ANNA MARTA MARINI INSTITUTO FRANKLIN–UAH Animation storyboard1 and comic book artist Rafael Navarro was born in Nogales (Estado de Sonora, Mexico) and raised in Los Angeles, where he has been based since. Aside from working as a freelance artist and participating in numerous projects in the comics industry through the years, in 1996 he created Sonambulo, his own independent comic book series; the initial issues won the renowned self-publishing grant Xeric Foundation Award, paving a path to delve further into its eponymous protagonist’s adventures. Sonambulo started off with the 3-issue Sleep of the Just narrative arc (republished as collected edition in 2001), to which several storylines followed through the years up to the present day. Salomon Lopez aka Sonambulo used to be a successful luchador during the apogee of Mexican lucha libre (the flashbacks set in his past date up to 1959); when he refused to abide by the local mob’s will, he was beaten up and left for dead. Nonetheless, he was simply thrown into a deep, supernatural sleep that lasted for decades up to the present day, when he woke up and built a new life for himself as a private detective of the hard-boiled kind. The sleep he had fell into has left him with the peculiar power to read people’s dreams, as well as the inability to fall asleep again. The visual and diegetic elements exploited by Navarro are diverse, from pin up ladies to lucha iconography, from supernatural horror encounters to crime entanglements, blended together by a culturally hybridized noir mood marked by Sonambulo’s own distinctive ethos.

Empirical Musicology Review Vol. 10, No. 3, 2015 “The Times They Were A-Changin’”: A Database-Driven Approach to the Evolution of Harmonic Syntax in Popular Music from the 1960s HUBERT LÉVEILLÉ GAUVIN [1] Schulich School of Music, McGill University ABSTRACT: The goal of this research is to investigate the pitch structures of popular music in the 1960s through a large corpus study in order to identify any consistent changes in harmonic and tonal syntax. The first study looks at the incidence of multi-tonic songs throughout the decade, while the second study focuses on the incidence of flat-side harmonies (e.g. bIII, bVI, and bVII) over the same period of time. While no difference was observed in the frequency of multi-tonic songs, the study showed a significant increase in the incidence of flat-side harmonies during the second half of the decade. Submitted 2014 September 16; accepted 2015 April 9. Many music scholars have addressed the attitudinal shift associated with this period, noting that “[r]ock musicians no longer aspire[d] so much to be professionals and craftspeople” but “artists” (Covach, 2006, p.
