Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017). -

How Film & TV Music Communicate – Vol.1 Text © Brian Morrell 2013 Chapter 4 H O W H A R M O N Y S P E A K S This chapter deals with modern and traditional techniques of using harmony and chord voicing to extort specific emotions. The chapter addresses a combination of fairly simple observations regarding how harmonies ‘speak’ to create a feeling of mood and feeling, through to more complex and deeper types of analysis. Central to the study, as always, is the issue of how music communicates meaning and how that meaning works in the film. The films and music analysed in this chapter are: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone - Main Theme & Diagon Ally (John Williams) The English Patient (Gabriel Yared) Atonement (Dario Marianelli) Catch me if you can (John Williams) Knowing (Marco Beltrami) Sixth Sense & The Village (James Newton Howard) Wolf (Ennio Morricone) Panic Room (Howard Shore) The Reaping (John Frizzell) Passengers (Edward Shearmur) HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE John Williams Let us first turn to one of the more recent and iconic movie franchises - Harry Potter . The first film was scored by John Williams and one of the most enduring motifs was ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ which is referenced numerous times in all the films in the series. The piece contains a heady mixture of childlike innocence and charm, together with slightly intimidating, frightening and menacing characteristics. Audio – ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ (Harry Potter) Fig.1 What unique characteristics does this music contain and how do they create exactly the right emotion within us? The first thing I have highlighted in the transcribed score is the 11 th and 9 th in bar three. -

This will be the fourth year the Music and Sound Design Labs take place at the Skywalker Ranch in northern California. Half of this year’s composing Fellows are women, extending the Institute’s commitment to female artists to a creative branch of filmmaking with an especially low percentage of women represented. The Music and Sound Design Labs provide a space for composers, directors and sound designers to collaborate on the process of providing music and sound for film. Fellows participate in workshops and creative exercises under the guidance of leading film composers and film music professionals acting as Creative Advisors. Each composer/director team will have their original scores for new independent film scenes performed live by a chamber orchestra. -

A student on a plane which is about to take off has a premonition that the plane will crash after takeoff. He panics and leaves the plane with a group of others. Ultimately the plane does eventually crash. By saving himself and a handful of other passengers the main protagonist has altered the future, or ‘death’s design’. The group of teenagers continues to be stalked by ‘death’, which claims back their lives one by one. The idea of an invisible force killing its victims is not a new one, but the idea of ‘death’ having a design and a plan works well in a modern context. One of the main points which so enticed producers into making the film is that there is no physical figure – no monster or killer. -

Film scores can animate, enhance, pump blood into, subvert, and often transcend their movie. This underlooked, underappreciated art form is almost 100 years old—still an infant compared to its predecessors like opera, ballet, and theatre music, but old enough to have a rich, fascinating history worth exploring. In this course we’ll take a trip through that history, at times skimming along the surface, at times diving deep. With the aid of film clips, live watch parties, and the occasional special guest, you’ll gain a solid knowledge of and appreciation for the most-heard, least-noticed art form of the past century. (Because we’re cramming one hundred years of history into a single—shortened!—semester, we’ll primarily focus on Hollywood film music, although a few classes will be devoted to international films and composers. This is a 2-1/2-hour concert program that features original orchestrations as well as special arrangements, and is conducted by the great John Debney, the composer of Hocus Pocus, Elf, Bruce Almighty and The Jungle Book. Hollywood Halloween Spectacular also features internationally acclaimed flute soloist Sara Andon and legendary drummer Dave Lombardo from the heavy metal band Slayer for a special performance of Christopher Young’s Ghostrider.
