NANCY WELCH WILLIAMS Class of 1966 COACH -1970 to PRESENT Nancy graduated from Shore Regional High School in 1966 and attended Trenton State College. Upon graduation, she returned to her alma mater and began one of the most storied and successful coaching careers in interscholastic history. Her outstanding record on the field along with her untiring efforts to bring equality to female athletics has been cited and awarded by many. Nancy began her Shore coaching career in 1970 and has been involved in the sports program ever since. She has been the head coach in field hockey, softball, basketball and track and has assisted in basketball and swimming. Her field hockey teams have achieved enormous success winning twenty-eight straight Division Titles, three Shore Conference Titles, thirteen Central Jersey Group Titles, and seven State Championships. She has coached seven AII-Americans and is the winningest field hockey coach in the United States with an overall record of 476-45-45. As a basketball coach, her teams were recognized as a shore power during the infancy years of girls basketball. She won two Shore Conference Championships and four Divisional Titles for a total of 205 wins. In softball, Nancy’s teams have had equal success since 1979 winning fourteen Divisional Titles, four Central Jersey Group Titles, three Shore Conference Titles, and a State Championship in 1988 while amassing 357 wins. As the head track coach from 1971-1974, her teams won three Divisional Titles, and a State Championship in 1972. Nancy has a won/loss record in all sports of 1073-250-45 and she has won nine overall State Championships, twenty Central Jersey Championships, fifty-two divisional Championships, and ten Shore Conference Championships. She has been honored by her selection into the Jersey Shore Hall of Fame, the NJSIAA Hall of Fame, and the National Field Hockey Coaches 400+ Club. She has also been named “Coach of the Year” in the sports of track & field, basketball, softball, and field hockey a total of sixteen times. Nancy was awarded the New Jersey Sports Writers Association Special Achievement Award in 1993 and will be honored by the National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association next week for her achievements in field hockey. Nancy has been a pioneer for women’s equity in sports and has been a leader in the promotion of female athletics. She continues to provide her student-athletes with the opportunities and tools necessary to succeed in their life after athletics. Nancy currently resides in West Long Branch and is employed by the Shore Regional High School District as a physical education instructor and coach..
