The research grants and contracts described in this document are, unless specifically labeled otherwise, supported by the U.S. DOE Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Geosciences, and Biosciences Division. ii Foreword This volume provides a record of the second biennial meeting of the Principal Investigators (PIs) funded by the Photosynthetic Systems program and is sponsored by the Chemical Sciences, Geosciences, and Biosciences Division of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Within DOE BES, there are two programs that fund basic research in energy-relevant biological sciences, Photosynthetic Systems and Physical Biosciences. These two Biosciences programs, along with a strong program in Solar Photochemistry, comprise the current Photochemistry and Biochemistry Team. This meeting specifically brings together under one roof all of the PIs funded by the Photosynthetic Systems program, along with Program Managers and staff not only from DOE BES but also other offices within DOE, the national labs, and other federal funding agencies. Our goal in holding these research meetings is to provide an environment that fosters exchange of information on your DOE-funded work; facilitates cooperation and collaboration among research groups; provides opportunities for discussions with DOE Program Managers and staff; and promotes sharing of new ideas and methodologies. Accordingly, “down time” is scheduled to encourage informal discussions and interactions. This year’s agenda features two invited speakers. We are pleased to have Dr. John Turner from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory who will talk about hydrogen production from photoelectrochemical cells (PECs), providing “food for thought” regarding the economic and theoretical considerations of PECs. We are also delighted to have Dr. W.E. Moerner from Stanford University who will tell you about exciting developments in the use of Anti- Brownian ELectrokinetic (ABEL) trap technology to understand behavior of individual photosynthetic antenna proteins and redox enzymes. While we extend a warm welcome and our sincere appreciation to our invited speakers, the real star at this year’s meeting is you. Your productivity, creativity, and commitment to world-class science come across in your abstracts and not only make a meeting like this possible but also gratifying and enjoyable. We hope that the meeting will further enhance the innovation and success of your research efforts and build a robust community of researchers in the study of photosynthesis and energy capture, conversion, and storage in plants, algae, and photosynthetic microbes. Whether you are delivering a talk or presenting a poster, we sincerely appreciate your contribution to this meeting. It has been an extraordinary time in DOE’s Office of Science, and we also thank you for your many contributions to the successful execution of our many funding opportunities over the last few years.   • Ingredients for Success 18Th HFSP Awardees Meeting
    Ingredients for success In 2018, we yet again embarked on a new era in the HFSP by Guntram Bauer Fellowship program. After careful internal discussion and HFSPO Director of Scientific Affairs and Communications preparations, the review committee was presided over by a non- reviewing chair. Peter Koopman from the Institute of Molecular Bioscience of the University of Queensland took center stage as chair of this committee. Peter finished a four year tenure as a member of the fellowship review committee in 2016 and arrived back in Strasbourg after a three month sailing trip in the southern Pacific. Peer review at HFSP is not reading tea leaves but serious and demanding work for all involved. Thanks to Peter Koopman we successfully completed the first fellowship review committee run by a non-reviewing chair. We are still not sure what the magic ingredient was that made this fellowship committee stand out. Whether it was a truly committed international review panel, or the drive and oversight of its non-reviewing chair, or simply because of the HFSP Sauce which arrived in the chair's suitcase in Strasbourg. Probably all three, though be assured that we will get to the bottom of the HFSP Sauce! I don’t think we are boasting about HFSP when we say that our Program always tries to synchronize its procedures with the dynamics at the frontiers of science. This is particularly true for our peer review process. Over many years we have made more than just subtle changes to our procedures in response to feedback from the scientific community.

    DRAFT Office of Basic Energy Sciences Accomplishments FY 1994 DRAFT Major Facilities Construction Highlights Advanced Photon Source Semiannual Review of Advanced Photon Source Proiect (APS) A Construction Project Management Review of the APS Project was conducted at Argonne National Laboratory on November 15-17, 1994 by the Office of Basic Energy Sciences and the Office of Management. The Review Committee consisted of Mr. James Carney, Construction Management Support Division, Chairman; Robert A. Zich, Acquisition and Assistance Management Division; Office of Basic Energy Sciences' Drs. Albert E. Evans, Frederick A. Koomanoff, William T. Oosterhuis, and Walter M. Polansky, together with eleven peer reviewers from DOE Laboratories. Also present were Mr. Matthew Cole from the Office of Environment, Safety, and Health Technical Support, Dr. Bal Mahajan of the Office of Performance Assessment, and Edward F. Koch from the Office of Field Management. The Committee is pleased to report that the APS Project is meeting budget ($811.9 Million Total Project Cost) and time schedules. Construction of the accelerator should be complete by January 1995. All construction, now mostly office and laboratory space, should be completed by February 1996. Commissioning, now underway, should-be complete well in advance of the December 1996 date scheduled for the start of routine operation. Development of Non-Polluting Process for Cleaning Metal Receives Award by the State of Illinois The Advanced Photon Source (APS) scientists, engineers, and technicians have combined their efforts and ideas to develop an alternate process for chemically cleaning aluminum-alloy vacuum chamber sections prior to their installation into the APS. The result of their efforts was-the elimination of 3,000 gallons of hazardous chemical waste per month and an estimated cost savings for waste removal of $300,000 in the first year.

Plant organ development to a specific size and shape is controlled by cell proliferation and cell expansion. While the cell proliferation process is extensively studied, the cell expansion process remains largely unknown, and can be affected by several factors, such as cell wall remodeling and the incorporation of new wall materials.
