  • GREEKS in SICILY* Adolfo J. Domínguez It Is Traditional to Begin
GREEKS IN SICILY* Adolfo J. Domínguez It is traditional to begin the history of Greek colonisation in Sicily by mentioning a well-known passage of Thucydides in the opening chapters of his sixth book because, despite the problems that this text continues to arouse, it is one of the most interesting general overviews left by an ancient author about this historical process, both in respect of Sicily and for continental Greece. I shall, therefore, fol- low tradition: Of the Hellenes, the first to arrive were Chalcidians from Euboea with Thucles, their founder. They founded Naxos and built the altar to Apollo Archegetes, which now stands outside the town, and upon which the deputies for the games sacrifice before sailing from Sicily. Syracuse was founded the year afterwards by Archias, one of the Heraclids from Corinth, who began by driving out the Sicels from the island upon which the inner city now stands, though it is no longer surrounded by water: in process of time the outer town also was taken within the walls and became populous. Meanwhile Thucles and the Chalcidians set out from Naxos in the fifth year after the foundation of Syracuse, and drove out the Sicels by arms and founded Leontini and after- wards Catane; the Catanians themselves choosing Evarchus as their founder. About the same time Lamis arrived in Sicily with a colony from Megara, and after founding a place called Trotilus beyond the river Pantacyas, and afterwards leaving it and for a short while joining the Chalcidians at Leontini, was driven out by them and founded Thapsus.

  • Archaic Greece Edited by H
Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-52929-7 - The Cambridge Companion to Archaic Greece Edited by H. A. Shapiro Frontmatter More information The Cambridge Companion to ARCHAIC GREECE S The Cambridge Companion to Archaic Greece provides a wide-ranging syn- thesis of history, society, and culture during the formative period of Ancient Greece, from the Age of Homer in the late eighth century to the Persian Wars of 490–480 BCE. In ten clearly written and succinct chapters, leading scholars from around the English-speaking world treat all aspects of the civilization of Archaic Greece, from social, political, and military history to early achievements in poetry, philosophy, and the visual arts. Archaic Greece was an age of experimentation and intellec- tual ferment that laid the foundations for much of Western thought and culture. Under the rule of strongmen known as “tyrants,” individual city-states in Greece rose to great power and wealth, and after a long period of isolation, many cities sent out colonies that spread Hellenism to all corners of the Mediterranean world. The Greeks came together in great sanctuaries like Delphi and Olympia to compete in athletic contests and celebrate their gods with the earliest examples of mon- umental architecture and sculpture. The book offers a vivid and fully documented account of this critical stage in the history of the West. H. A. Shapiro is the W.H. Collins Vickers Professor of Archaeology and Professor of Classics at The Johns Hopkins University. A Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, he is the author of Art and Cult under the Tyrants in Athens (1989), Personifications in Greek Art (1993), and Myth into Art: Poet and Painter in Classical Greece (1994) and coauthor of Women in the Classical World (1994).

  • Languages in Sicily Between the Classical Age and Late Antiquity: a Case of Punctuated Equilibrium? Marta Capano (Università Degli Studi Di Napoli L’Orientale)
Languages in Sicily between the Classical Age and Late Antiquity: a case of punctuated equilibrium? Marta Capano (Università degli Studi di Napoli L’Orientale) Abstract Although late Roman Sicily is clearly represented by the ancient authors as a multilingual environment, the 20th–century scientific debate has proposed two divergent descriptions of the Sicilian linguistic landscape. While some scholars denied a deep Latinization under the Roman Empire, the increasing evidence of Latin inscriptions led others to hypothesize the decline of Greek. In the last decades, new approaches to bilingualism and linguistic contact, applied to antiquity, have demonstrated that many languages frequently coexist for a long time. Multilingualism has always characterized Sicily, but, before the Roman conquest, all minority languages had gradually disappeared, and the diatopic and dialectal variation of Greek converged towards a slightly Doric κοινά. As we can see from the epigraphic evidence, Roman Sicily was fully Greek–Latin bilingual until the end of the 5th century, and the two languages influenced each other. Latin and Greek epigraphs show similar onomastic material and phonological and morphological features, as well as a number of shared set phrases (mostly from Latin). These data are consistent with the first phase of Dixon’s theory of “punctuated equilibrium”, namely the equilibrium, since the two populations had a similar population, lifestyle and religious beliefs and, although Romans ruled over Sicily, Greek language and culture never lost their prestige. Even though the quantity of Greek evidence is not stable over the course of the 5th century, Sicily ultimately displays a situation of equilibrium until the end of the 5th century.

  • An Analysis of Astronomical Alignments of Greek Sicilian Temples
An analysis of astronomical alignments of Greek Sicilian Temples Alun Salt, The Centre for Interdisciplinary Science, University of Leicester, e: [email protected] t: @alun Abstract In the eighth century BC something peculiar seems to happen on Sicily. The archaeological record starts to show the arrival of Greek material culture. By the fifth century BC the island is effectively 'Hellenised' and ancient historians record the political and military action of poleis, Greek city- states. Each polis has traditionally been seen as the offshoot of a city elsewhere. Genealogies of cities ultimately end in cities found in the cities of the Peloponnese and the Aegean. The 'Greek' identity of the Sicilian cities is part of a wider debate on the concept of Identity in the ancient world. This paper considers if there is a contribution archaeoastronomers can make to such discussions by considering the alignments of Greek temples. Greek religion was intimately related to notions of civic identity and what it meant to be 'Greek'. I propose a method of studying small samples of temples, which combines both alignment analysis and historical context. Therefore it may be possible that a study of the temples may yield useful information about collective identities. However, as this method shows, the more ambiguous the cultural data the less certain any astronomical patterns may be. Binomial Distribution and the temples of Greek Sicily This paper develops a method initially published by Salt (2009) using data published in the same paper. The data set comprises 41 orientations of 44 temples dating from the archaic and classical periods found in ten poleis around Sicily.

Downloaded by [New York University] at 23:12 03 December 2016 ANCIENT SYRACUSE Syracuse possesses a unique place in the history of the ancient Mediterranean because of its contribution to Greek culture and political thought and practice. Even in the fi rst century BC Cicero could still declare, ‘You have oft en heard that of all the Greek cities Syracuse is the greatest and most beautiful.’ Sicily’s strategic location in the Mediterranean brought the city prosperity and power, placing it in the fi rst rank of states in the ancient world. The history and governance of the city were recorded from the fi ft h century BC and the volume of literary sources comes close to matching the records of Athens or Rome. Combining literary and material evidence this monograph traces the history of Syracuse, off ering new arguments about the date of the city’s foundation, and continues through the fi ft h century when, as a democracy, Syracuse’s military strength grew to equal that of Athens or Sparta, surpassing them in the early fourth century under the tyrant Dionysius I. From ca. 350 BC, however, the city’s fortunes declined as the state was wracked with civil strife as the tyranny lost control. Th e result was a collapse so serious that the city faced complete and imminent destruction. He has previously lectured at the University of South Africa and at Cardiff University, UK. The new maps are designed to lighten the search for the place-names and the landmarks they contain by a freer spacing and lettering of the towns, fortresses, harbours, rivers and so forth, likely to be needed by readers of the classical writers and the histories of Greece and Rome.

  • British Scholarship on Greek Colonisation in Context 1780-1990
British Scholarship on Greek Colonisation in Context 1780-1990 Summary This thesis examines British scholarly perceptions of Greek colonisation from the eighteenth century to the present. Beginning with a study of the ancient sources for Greek colonisation and the key themes which preoccupied ancient authors, the thesis proceeds to argue that, modifying recent interpretations of work from this age of empire, British scholarship did not, as a whole, simplistically distort ancient evidence so as to create a version of Greek colonisation which mirrored, in a self-congratulatory way, contemporary British experiences. We should therefore position this scholarship within its appropriate historical context (with special attention to politics, empire, colonisation, and perceptions of antiquity). In addition to enabling us to trace the impact of the great events of the modern era upon classical scholarship, in doing so we can also gain insight into the complexities, hopes, and anxieties which characterised British thinking about such themes as empire, colonisation, political freedom, and the place of Western civilisation in historical perspective.
