Maidana Buenos Aires, 2015 Estudio de la biodiversidad de Ostrácodos actuales y su aplicación en la elaboración de funciones de transferencia para reconstrucciones paleoambientales del Holoceno en la provincia de Santa Cruz (50-52º S) El extremo austral de la región Patagónica es un área de gran interés para la reconstrucción paleoambiental del Holoceno por su situación geográfica y climática única dentro del Hemisferio Sur. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue estimar variaciones pasadas en parámetros ambientales climáticamente controlados durante el Holoceno Medio y Tardío mediante estudios paleolimnológicos basados en un bioproxy, los ostrácodos (Crustacea: Ostracoda). Se analizó la hidroquímica de más de 30 cuerpos de agua lénticos actuales del sur de Santa Cruz, con el objetivo de caracterizar el gradiente ambiental subyacente. A su vez, se evaluó la distribución de los ostrácodos patagónicos en función de la concentración y composición de solutos de sus aguas huésped. Los datos generados fueron utilizados para elaborar una función de transferencia para la reconstrucción cuantitativa de variaciones pasadas en la salinidad, la cual fue aplicada a testigos sedimentarios lacustres cuyo registro abarca los últimos miles de años. Asimismo, se realizaron inferencias semi-cuantitativas sobre la composición de solutos (tipo de agua) en dichos ambientes. Esta información, junto con datos obtenidos a partir de otros proxies - biológicos, sedimentológicos y/o magnéticos – fue utilizada para reconstruir variaciones pasadas en el balance hídrico de los cuerpos de agua estudiados, las cuales a su vez permitieron evaluar cambios en los regímenes de precipitaciones y patrones de circulación atmosférica sobre la Patagonia Astral durante la segunda mitad del Holoceno. Palabras clave: Reconstrucción paleoambiental - Patagonia Austral – Ostrácodos como bioproxies - Paleolimnología – Holoceno Medio y Tardío – Hidroquímica - Funciones de transferencia Extant Ostracod biodiversity and its application in the development of transfer functions for Holocene paleoenvironmental reconstructions in Santa Cruz Province (50-52º S) The southermost part of the Patagonian region constitutes a key area for the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the Holocene, due to its unique geographical setting and climatic characteristics within the Southern Hemisphere. The present investigation aimed to estimate past variations in climatically-driven environmental parameters during the Middle and Late Holocene by means of a paleolimnological approach, using ostracods (Crustacea: Ostracoda) as bioproxies. The hidrochemistry of over 30 lentic waterbodies located in southern Santa Cruz province was analyzed in order to characterize the underlying environmental gradient. In turn, Patagonian ostracods distribution was evaluated with respect to the solute concentration and composition of their host waters. This data was used to develop a transfer function for cuantitative reconstruction of past variations in salinity, which was applied to the ostracod record of several lacustrine sediment records spanning the last few milennia. Additionally, semi-quantitative inferences on past solute composition (water type) variations were drawn. This information, together with data inferred from other proxies – biological, sedimentological and/or magnetic – allowed the reconstruction of past variations in the hydrological balance of the waterbodies under study, which in turn provided insight into precipitation regimes and atmospheric circulation patterns shifts over Southern Patagonia during the second half of the Holocene. Thirty-one species of Ostracoda in thirteen genera have been identified. Most species belong to typically freshwater genera: Candona, Cyclocypris, Physocypria, Cyprinotus, Eucy pris, Cypridopsis, Potamocy pris, Ilyocy pris, Pelocypris, Cytherissa, Litnnocythera, and Dartvinula. Coring of the draw during archaeological investigation of the Clovis assemblage on the adjacent uplands revealed evidence for a regionally rare continuous, stratified depositional record beginning immediately before the Younger Dryas chronozone (YDC). Thirty sediment samples from the draw adjacent to the archaeological site were analyzed for microinvertebrates (ostracodes and mollusks) and gyrogonites (calcareous algae) to reconstruct its environmental history. Wet-dry cycles marked the presence/absence of microfossils. Based upon microfossils, this investigation highlights environ- mental change marked by the evolution from wetter/cooler to warmer/drier conditions at the Mockingbird Gap site and its response to climate change and groundwater fluctuations during and after the YDC. Four biofacies are recognized: the pre- Ciénega setting is sterile. Holarctic species near the base of core 08-1 indicate cooling conditions prior to 13,000 cal yr BP during the early Ciénega phase. Warmer, more saline conditions characterize the late-Ciénega biofacies between 11,000 and 10,000 cal yr BP. Presence of gypsum during formation of the post-Ciénega phase and the most salinity tolerant species after 10,000 cal yr BP is consistent with the aridification typifying the early Holocene.

Here we present a study carried out in 50 springs. Each spring was visited once from October 2015 to January 2016. The sampled sites were selected to include springs studied in 2001 and 2004, to evaluate changes in water quality and ostracod assemblages that possibly occurred over a period of 10–15 years, and explore the relationships between ostracod community composition and water physical and chemical variables. Our results showed a decrease in the chemical water quality especially, in springs south of the Po river, evidenced by high nitrate levels. Most of the studied springs showed a relevant decrease in dissolved reactive silica, probably related to recent transformations of either agricultural practices or crop typology. Ostracods were mostly represented by common and tolerant species, and communities were characterized by low alpha diversity and high species turnover.

Abstract A checklist of the recent non-marine ostracods of South American .inland waters, based on extant literature, is presented. 260 species in 53 genera are reported in c. 130 papers. About 20% of the genera and c. 85% of the species appear to be endemic to this continent. Five species and one genus are here formally synonymized and 24 species are transferred to another genus. Three new names are proposed for junior homonymes. Especially the fauna of the West Indies and of parts of Brasil appear to be fairly well known. Most parts of South America, however, remain terra incognita with regard to their ostracod fauna and the number of species presently reported constitutes only a fraction of the ostracod diversity that can be expected. On the other hand, various nominal taxa, especially in large genera such as Chlamydotheca and Strandesia s.l., will eventually turn out to be synonyms.
