GLASG 1)W. l!T PREFATORY NOTE AFTER the publication of the Records of the Clan ancl Narne of Fergiisson, Ferguson, and Fergus in 1895, the Editors received a number of communications from persons of the name resident in Canada, the United States, and elsewhere. There also reached them a considerable amount of additional information, illustrating the earlier history of the Clan, and indicating the common origin of various families. The discovery of papers at Pitfour a year after the book came out was followed by the appearance of His Grace the Duke of Atholl's Chronicles of the Fa1nilies of .Atholl and Tulliebardine, which gives many interesting particulars about the Olan in Athole, while the Editors have been placed in communication with the representa tives of other families, who had been unaware of, or omitted to contribute to the original volume. Ultimately in the spring of 1898 the Clan Fergusson Society authorised the preparation and publication of the present supplemen tary volume. The Editors have, as on the previous occasion, en deavoured to supply notices of the families dealt with from the pen of a member of the particular family.

Xonoon GIBBINGS & COY., LTD., 18 Bury Street, w.c. 190 0. TO Sir KENNETH MATHESON, Bart. OF LOCHALSH, A WORTHY REPRESENTATIVE OF ONE OF THE MOST CAPABLE, BRAVE, AND STALWART OF HIGHLAND FAMILIES. PREFACE. The first edition of the late Mr Mackenzie's "History of the Mathesons" appeared in 1882, and the book has now been long out of print. Mr Mackenzie had a difficult task in writing this work, for though the Clan in the 14th century undoubtedly rivalled in position and power the neighbouring Mackenzies, yet through the action of the Macdonalds in the following century its unity was broken, and it became a " minor clan," with no charters, and with no references thereto in public documents. The individual history of the Northern Clans at best begins with the 15th century, but here Mr Mackenzie had only the clan traditions to avail himself of until the 17th century, when the minor clans all over the North come into the light of history from under the shadow of the larger clans and their chiefs.

Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2012 with funding from National Library of Scotland http://archive.org/details/historyofmacleodOOmack PREFACE. -:o:- This volume completes my fifth Clan History, written and published during the last ten years, making altogether some two thousand two hundred and fifty pages of a class of literary work which, in every line, requires the most scrupulous and careful verification. This is in addition to about the same number, dealing with the traditions^ superstitions, general history, and social condition of the Highlands, and mostly prepared after business hours in the course of an active private and public life, including my editorial labours in connection with the Celtic Maga- zine and the Scottish Highlander. This is far more than has ever been written by any author born north of the Grampians and whatever may be said ; about the quality of these productions, two agreeable facts may be stated regarding them.
