Jonathan Quick 9=1oudburst Eric Whitacre Take Me to the Water Rollo Dilworth l I,1' IIT l The Conductors Huw Edwards is now entering his ninth season as Music Director of Portland's Columbia Symphony Orchestra, and has consistently received critical approval from audiences, soloists and the press for his intense performances and imaginative programming. Recent , ..;·. highlights have included Malcolm Arnold's Second Symphony, Ravel's Mother Goose, Symphony No. 1 by Elgar, Richard Strauss' Death & Transfiguration, and Bruckner's epic Fifth Symphony. The CSO's music program has expanded greatly under Huw's leadership: it now enjoys a second concert series in East Metro, plays a "Symphonic Safari" each summer, performs a pair of Holiday Concerts in December, the whole orchestra performs at the Gala Dinner in January, it plays the National Anthem at a Trailblazers game each year, and presents an "encore performance" at a novel venue around Portland each May. Huw is garnering a notable reputation for his performances and devotion to the music of Beethoven, Elgar, Sibelius and Bruckner, as well as his series of annual commissions from Pacific Northwest composers. Mr. Edwards has also completed five successful seasons as Music Director of the Olympia Symphony Orchestra in Washington, where there is a palpa9le sense of excitement following his appointment. After landmark sold-out seasons the past two years, Edwards is credited with improving the Orchestra, initiating an expansive Education/Outreach. program and being very active in the f community. Mr. Edwards has performed with the Oregon Symphony, Vancouver ·Symphony, worked with the symphony orches.tras of Dallas and Memphis, as well as numerous ensembles-both nationally and internationally. Huw has served as cover con<.iuctor for both the Seattle Symphony and Oregon Symphony and has conducted at the YMA music camp in Salem since 2004. In July Huw was invited-for a third time-to lead the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra before 20,000 people at one of their famous "Concerts on the Square", and also led the second annual "Concert at the Capitol" in Olympia. Huw recently made a notable debut with the Eugene Symphony and was .invited to be the conductor at the inaugural Annas Bay Music Festival in August 2006, where he conducted two 20th-century American operas. From 2002-2005 Mr. Edwards was Music Director of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras, and was a faculty member at the t Marrowstone Music Festival (1998 to 2005). Mr. Edwards moved to ' Seattle after seven memorable seasons (1995-2002) as Music Director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP), which included memorable tours to Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Huw was invited back to guest conduct the PYP this spring for a three-month residency and performed concerts of music by Britten and Bruckner in Portland, Newberg, Forest Grove and at St. Mary's Cathedral. Huw is also actively sought as a conductor, clinician and adjudicato,r with All-State and Honors Orchestras around the USA . Born in South Wales (UK), Mr. Edw~ds holds degrees from the fl[:niversity of Surrey in England and SMU in Dallas, which he · attended on scholarship in 1988. Huw came to the Pacific Northwest from Chicago, where he was a lecturer at Northwestern University an.d a doctoral candidate. Bis principal teachers have been Simon Johnson and Barry Wordsworth (London), Anshel Brusilow and Eduardo Mata (Dallas), and Victor Yampolsky (Chicago). Mark Fonder, professor of music, is the conductor of the Ithaca College Concert Band and has been teaching conducting and instrumental music education courses at Ithaca College since 1989. From 1994 to 2003, he was the Chairman of the Music Education Department. He is active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, school music consultant, and clinician and has served in these capacities throughout the United States. Internationally, he has guest conducted, given research presentations or adjudicated bands in Austria, Japan, Canada, China, Singapore, Sweden and .the United ·ngdom. Dr. Fonder, a graduate of and twice a fellowship recipient t the University of Illinois, was director of bands at Park Falls (Wisconsin) High School and was on the faculties of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and University of Texas-San Antonio prior to coming to New York. He has also served on the faculties of The University of Washington, Vandercook College and the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Fender's research has been published in various journals including the Music Educators Journal, Ba.nd Directors Guide, Instrumentalist, Journal of Band Research, Coundl for Research in Music Education and the Journal of Research in Music Education. He was chair of the Music Educators Journal Editorial Committee from 1998-2002 and is currently the editor of the Journal ofHistorical Research in Music Education. Dr. Fonder has played principal trombone with the Green Bay (Wisconsin) Symphony, the Green Bay Packer Band, and the San Antonio Brass, and for such entertainers as Robert Goulet, Rich Little, and Rita Moreno .. In 1987, Dr. Fonder was awarded the National Band Association-Wisconsin Chapter Citation of Excellence, in 1998, the Ithaca College President's.Recognition Award and has been the recipient of a University of Wisconsin teaching fellowship. He has een elected to Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary education fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi, an honorary scholars fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda, an honorary music fraternity and the prestigious American Bandmasters Association. He was selected to Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2005-2006 and Who's Who in America in 2008. Janet Galvan, Professor of Music at Ithaca College, conducts the Ithaca College Women's Chorale, the Ithaca College Chorus, and is Artistic Director for the Ithaca Children's Choir. Dr. Galvan's contribution to choral music was recognized by her New York colleagues in 1995 when she received the New York Outstanding Choral Director Award. · Dr. Galvan has conducted national, regional, and all-state choral ' . festivals throughout the Un.ited States. Most recently, she conducted the Alaska High School Mixed All-State Choir, the Maine All-State Mixed Choir, Vermont All-State Mixed Choii:, and the Kansas All- State Mixed Choir. She was the 6th national honor choir conductor in the history of A.CDA. Dr. Galvan was the conductor of the North American Children's Chorale which performed aq.nually in Carnegie Hall from its creation in 1995 until 2005. In 2002 she conducted the Mormon Tabernacle. Choir. Her own choral groups have been chosen to perform at. national, regional, and state music conferences, invitational choral festivals, and in concerts in the United Kingdom and Europe.
