Biographies

A native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Typhanie Monique Coller is a respected bandleader, songwriter, versatile vocalist and a highly in-demand educator, teaching at some of Chicago’s most recognized institutions, along with coaching professional performers from around the world.

A bold and engaging performer who exudes an aura of warmth, soul and charisma, Typhanie’s daring rhythmic ideas and unique improvisatory delivery place her in an elite class of vocalists. Equally at home with pop, , R&B and traditional jazz, she confidently defies any categorization whatsoever.

Typhanie’s innate talent and diverse range of influences made her a natural on Chicago’s acid- jazz scene, and she became heavily involved with groups on the leading edge of that funk-fueled movement, including Sumo, Jive Council and Peking Turtle. Her interest in combining spontaneous hip-hop grooves with advanced jazz improvisation continues today in her side project The Booty Movement Coalition, a collective of some of Chicago finest and most creative musicians.

In the early 2000’s, Monique teamed up with Chicago-based guitarist Neal Alger, and the two established themselves as a regular duo in performances around the city and across the country. The duo have three critically acclaimed CD’s under their wings: Intrinsic (2004), In This Room (2007), and Yuletide Groove (2009).

Typhanie will release her fourth disc Call It Magic (Dot Time Records) on February 3, 2017. Produced by Grammy award winning producer Jeff Levenson (Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, The Brecker Brothers), it is Typhanie’s most ambitious project to date.

She has shared the stage and recorded with many jazz luminaries, including Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, The Manhattan Transfer, Mavis Staples, Joel Frahm, Ken Peplowski, Victor Goines, Tony Monaco, Tom Kennedy, Dana Hall, and Ernie Adams. Her working quartet consists of Ben Lewis, Joshua Ramos, Dana Hall and Greg Artry.

Typhanie has appeared at numerous distinguished jazz venues, including Chicago’s Jazz Showcase and City Winery, Smalls Jazz Club and The Kitano in , The Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, The Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis and The Dakota in Minneapolis, and major outdoor festivals like Taste of Chicago, Isthmus Jazz Festival, SummerFest and the . Internationally, she has performed in Ukraine and Russia.

Monique’s teaching resume is as diverse as her performance experience and she maintains strong connections with some of Chicago’s premier institutions. She joined the DePaul University Jazz Studies faculty as a combo coach in the fall of 2016. She’s been an adjunct faculty member at Columbia College since 2011, directing ensembles, teaching and developing vocal pedagogy courses, and giving private instruction in musical theater, pop, rock, jazz and soul genres. During the fall quarter of 2015, Typhanie was invited to teach pop and jazz to Northwestern University’s musical theatre students, in both an applied voice and a studio class setting. For the last 11 years, she has taught at the Old Town School of Folk Music where she has created and developed numer- ous jazz vocal courses.

In 2016, Typhanie coached singers in a stage production of Another Word for Beauty at the Goodman Theatre. She regularly appears as a guest clinician and performer at high schools and universities in Chicago and around the U.S. Midwest, leading engaging workshops and master classes in jazz singing and contemporary vocal technique.

Indeed, her influence as an educator—which reached a high point when she served on the adjudication panel of the 2015 International Vocal Jazz Competition—continues to be felt worldwide. She worked as a vocal coach for the Voice of McDonald’s International Voice DePaul Jazz Combo I • November 5, 2019 Biographies

Competition in 2010, 2012, 2014, helping the famous fast-food chain’s employee contestants prepare their performances. Mexico-based pop sensation Guillermo Otero hired Typhanie to spend 10 days coaching him and singing background vocals on his hit album Yo Soy Yo (Capitol Latin/ Universal Music Latin Entertainment).

Typhanie considers herself a lifelong student of the art of singing and has studied with jazz masters Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordan and Bobby McFerrin, and more recently with Jeanie LoVetri, who stands at the forefront of contemporary commercial music vocal pedagogy. Monique holds a Master of Music degree in Applied Vocal Pedagogy from Northeastern University and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Business from Elmhurst College.

Chad McCullough has performed with his bands at festivals throughout the globe, including the Festival of New Trumpet Music (New York), the GG Jazz Festival (Krasnodar, Russia), The Earshot Jazz Festival (Seattle), Halifax Jazz Festival (Halifax, NS) and The Appeltuin Jazz Festival (Belgium). He has produced over 30 albums, which have been released on several different international labels, and many have peaked in the top 100 for national airplay in the US.

As a composer, he has scored for film, written for various brass ensembles, dancers, and string quartets and quintets- in both classical and jazz idioms. Many of his pieces have been used for music spots on NPR. He is also in high demand as an educator, and frequently speaks about jazz music and the trumpet to students of all ages, giving clinics at high schools and colleges throughout the country. He has been involved with mentoring projects run by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, the radio station KPLU, and has done educational outreach in several internationally-recognized high school and college music programs.

Chad holds a M.M. from the University of Washington, and a B.M. from the University of Idaho, where he was a Lionel Hampton Scholar, and was the first student to graduate with a jazz emphasis on his degree. He attended the jazz & creative music workshop at the Banff Centre in Canada, won a DCASE grant to study intensively with Tim Hagains, and is currently on the faculty at DePaul University. If you ask his mother, she will tell you he is the best trumpet player in the world.

Tim Coffman is one of the most active trombonists and teachers in the Chicago area. Tim is in demand for studio and show work and has performed with Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, The O’Jays, Barry Manilow, , Tito Puente, Johnny Mathis, Paul Anka, Al Jarreau, Henry Mancini, Stevie Wonder, Diane Schur, , Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga and many others. Tim has also performed with the WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany. Tim was a regular member of the Rob Parton Big Band and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble under the direction of and Dana Hall. Tim is now a regular member of the New Standard Jazz Orchestra.

Tim has been a member of the Jazz Studies faculty at DePaul University since 1997. Before teaching at DePaul, he taught at New Trier High School as the trombone instructor and directed several jazz improvisation classes from 1990-2001.

Mr. Coffman is excited to be a new XO Brass Artist/Clinician. XO Brass is the professional line of Jupiter Music. He is playing on the new jazz trombone designed by John Fedchock, the model 1634-LT. Tim is an artist for Denis Wick mouthpieces and plays those exclusively. Tim has performed/adjudicated at various high schools, jazz festivals and universities. In January of 2017, Tim was the Artist in Residence for the Purdue University Jazz Festival.

He completed his first recording entitledCrossroads , available on the Blujazz label. In the summer, he teaches at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop at the University of Louisville. He has been on the faculty since 1992.
