The Church Architect did put the work out for Tender but only one came in and that was with Silly figures. I spoke to Peter again during this week and I asked if we could look at trying to make the building “Water-tight”. This work will be put out for Tender. At this time we have just over £14,000 in the Set Off Account and just over £39,000 in the current account. Monies raised in the last year for the roof fund was just over £6,700. We need to push again with funds for the roof and we ask you to help us as best you can with fund raising and maybe making a donation towards this? Once we get the tenders in we will seek to get help with a grant. Please note the Mass on Friday will be a Requiem Mass and will take place at 11am. There will be no 10am Mass on this day. Today: When Christ came into the world, the angels sang about peace: and when Jesus returned to the Father, peace was bequeathed. “Whatever house you go into”, he instructed his disciples when sending them on missions, “let your first words be, ‘Peace be to this house!’” (Lk 10:5). This was the same peace which Isaiah foretold as coming in abundance: “Towards her I send peace flowing like a river.” (Is 66:12) What a precious gift of God to give to the world – the gift of peace. The gift of peace is the peace of Christ – how do we define it? Peace is a climate in which every person and every group of persons can live the fullness of life that God intended for us when he created us. How does one appropriate to himself or herself this peace. It is by “becoming a new creature” (Gal 6:15) by living the new mode of existence brought about by the cross of Christ, by his death and resurrection. This means that Christian peace comes through union with Christ and by dying to oneself, especially to some of the worst enemies of peace that inhabit and exploit our human nature. These enemies are: avarice, ambition, envy, anger and pride. If these enemies are denied entrance into our lives, we should enjoy the perpetual peace of Christ, because through this denial we will rise with him to live in the power and grace of his risen person. That is peace! The peace of Christ thus begins in one’s heart, but it is meant to flow into the hearts of others, so that the personal peace becomes world peace. Blessed are the peacemakers, they shall never be unemployed, for there is so much need for the peace of Christ in today’s world. As Jesus sent out his disciples to pass on this peace to others, he complained that, “the harvest is rich, but the labourers are few” (LK 10:2), thus indirectly urging all of his would-be followers to become messengers of peace. There are many ways by which we can bring the peace of Christ to others. There is the unusual story of a man who returned to his car which was parked outside a large shopping centre. Lying on the front seat was a note: “Dear Sir/Madam: I fully intended to steal your car until I noticed the “Peace-Be-With- You” sticker. It made me pause and reflect. I reasoned that if I did steal your car, you certainly would not be at peace and on the other hand, I felt I would not be at peace either, as this is my ‘first job’! So, peace be to you and to me. Drive carefully and next time lock your car.” The note was signed: “A Would-Be Car Thief.” (MB) There will be a second collection this weekend in respect of the Choirs Tour to Lourdes and Paris. Fundraising for Lourdes We are still £3,000 short of our fundraising target and anything you can do to help us reach this target would be greatly appreciated. • Deprived Cathedral Clergy and English Catholicism, 1553-1574’ (Mphil Thesis, Cambridge, 2015)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Apollo 1 THE ORIGINS OF RECUSANCY IN ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND RECONSIDERED FREDERICK E. SMITH Clare College, University of Cambridge ABSTRACT. Most historians now acknowledge that Catholic recusancy existed in small pockets throughout 1560s and early 1570s England thanks to the sporadic efforts of a handful of former Marian priests. However, it is widely agreed that the influx of continentally trained seminarians and missionaries from abroad after 1574 was responsible for transforming the ‘curious and confused’ activities of these Marian clergymen into a fully fledged, intellectually justified campaign in favour of non-conformity. This article challenges this consensus through investigation of a neglected group of clerics – the cathedral clergy of Mary I’s reign. Drawing on insights emerging from recent research into the nature of Mary’s church, it demonstrates how these clerics became key agents in the so-called ‘invention of the Counter-Reformation’ in Marian England. It suggests that this ‘upbringing’ gave these priests the determination and skills to become leaders of a co-ordinated campaign in favour of principled non-conformity following Elizabeth’s accession. Far from lacking the zeal of their seminary and missionary counterparts, this study sees the former cathedral clergy imitating the practices of their adversaries and anticipating the strategies of the later English mission in order to promote recusancy throughout England from as early as 1560. On 24 June 1559, less than a year after the state-sponsored restoration of English Catholicism came to an abrupt end with the death of Mary Tudor, Elizabeth I’s government passed ‘An act for the uniformity of common prayer and divine service’.

AFFECTIONATELY DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF MY BELOVED GRANDFATHER SAMUEL COi\fFORT TRUBEE. HARRIET TRUBEE GARLICK. INTRODUCTION. REALIZING the fact, that unless the members of a family are sufficiently interested in their past record to preserve it in writing, it will be forgotten and lost by the passing away of generation after generation, I have written, for the benefit of ourselves and descendants, a history of our family, commencing with· our Hebrew ancestor Andris Trubee, of Holland. The Jews of that land came from Spain; where, for many years, they had occupied the highest positions in lit erature, art and wealth. In order to_ escape persecution many of the Jews, outwardly, embraced Catholicism, but secretly worshiped the '' God of Israel." King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella resolved to confis cate the property of their Jewish population for the bene fit of the Church and State; therefore they issued a man ifesto expelling all Hebrews within their realm. Noble men and peasants were treated with the same severity, and soon beautiful homes and halls of learning, were vacated for the crowded vessel, and a refuge in a strange land ; penniless, and with only a few articles of clothing, many of this abused people reached Holland, where their indus trious habits soon enabled them to acquire, again, a com petency.
