For further details please contact Marian on 07986 801618. Church Roof: It is obvious that we have serious problems with the Church roof. The Church Architect did put the work out for Tender but only one came in and that was with Silly figures. I spoke to Peter again during this week and I asked if we could look at trying to make the building “Water-tight”. This work will be put out for Tender. At this time we have just over £14,000 in the Set Off Account and just over £39,000 in the current account. Monies raised in the last year for the roof fund was just over £6,700. We need to push again with funds for the roof and we ask you to help us as best you can with fund raising and maybe making a donation towards this? Once we get the tenders in we will seek to get help with a grant.

Please note the Mass on Friday will be a Requiem Mass and will take place at 11am. There will be no 10am Mass on this day. Today: When Christ came into the world, the angels sang about peace: and when Jesus returned to the Father, peace was bequeathed. “Whatever house you go into”, he instructed his disciples when sending them on missions, “let your first words be, ‘Peace be to this house!’” (Lk 10:5). This was the same peace which foretold as coming in abundance: “Towards her I send peace flowing like a river.” (Is 66:12) What a precious gift of God to give to the world – the gift of peace. The gift of peace is the peace of Christ – how do we define it? Peace is a climate in which every person and every group of persons can live the fullness of life that God intended for us when he created us. How does one appropriate to himself or herself this peace. It is by “becoming a new creature” (Gal 6:15) by living the new mode of existence brought about by the cross of Christ, by his death and resurrection. This means that Christian peace comes through union with Christ and by dying to oneself, especially to some of the worst enemies of peace that inhabit and exploit our human nature. These enemies are: avarice, ambition, envy, anger and pride. If these enemies are denied entrance into our lives, we should enjoy the perpetual peace of Christ, because through this denial we will rise with him to live in the power and grace of his risen person. That is peace! The peace of Christ thus begins in one’s heart, but it is meant to flow into the hearts of others, so that the personal peace becomes world peace. Blessed are the peacemakers, they shall never be unemployed, for there is so much need for the peace of Christ in today’s world. As Jesus sent out his disciples to pass on this peace to others, he complained that, “the harvest is rich, but the labourers are few” (LK 10:2), thus indirectly urging all of his would-be followers to become messengers of peace. There are many ways by which we can bring the peace of Christ to others. There is the unusual story of a man who returned to his car which was parked outside a large shopping centre. Lying on the front seat was a note: “Dear Sir/Madam: I fully intended to steal your car until I noticed the “Peace-Be-With- You” sticker. It made me pause and reflect. I reasoned that if I did steal your car, you certainly would not be at peace and on the other hand, I felt I would not be at peace either, as this is my ‘first ’! So, peace be to you and to me. Drive carefully and next time lock your car.” The note was signed: “A Would-Be Car Thief.” (MB)

There will be a second collection this weekend in respect of the Choirs Tour to Lourdes and Paris. Fundraising for Lourdes We are still £3,000 short of our fundraising target and anything you can do to help us reach this target would be greatly appreciated. Children’s Liturgy takes place at the Cathedral during the 10am Sunday Mass. Weekly Church Collection : It is obvious from the recent Church collections that the rise in carparking charges “in and around the Cathedral” has had a huge impact on the weekly collection - you may have noticed that the loose plate has been down by £250/300. Can we ask you to look again at what you contribute so that we can try and bridge the gap? If everyone tried to give an extra £1 per week it would help the Cathedral greatly. Money is perhaps the most significant of all our worldly possessions. We cannot manage without it… neither can the Church. Consider Gift Aiding your donations. It costs you nothing and benefits the parish by 25% added to your donation by the taxman – so £5 turns into £6.25. For further information please contact Debra in the Cathedral Office. Prayer for the Sick

Father, your Son accepted his sufferings to teach us the virtue of patience in human illness. Hear the prayers we offer for our sick brethren. May all who suffer pain, illness or disease realize that they have been chosen to be saints and know that they are joined to Christ in his suffering for the salvation of the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Canonisation will take place on Sunday 13th October in Rome. Cardinal Newman founded the Birmingham Oratory in 1849 and, when he died at the age of 89, 15,000 people lined the city's streets for his funeral. Cardinal Newman is known for many great qualities, but is remember particularly for the kindness and compassion of his ministry to the people of Birmingham. The Canonisation comes after a second miracle in his name was confirmed by Francis earlier this year. Two authenticated miracles are required before sainthood and Newman has been credited with curing a man's spinal disease and is now said to have healed a woman's unstoppable bleeding. Cardinal Newman was beatified (the process in which an individual is declared blessed after a miracle is attributed to him or her) in 2010 by Pope Benedict before tens of thousands of people in his home city. To follow the events leading up to the Canonisation in October please visit the Oratories of England website at: www.newmancanonisation.com
