................................................... 82 6 Úvod „…And over weariness and doubt rose up the horns like bellied sails, like canvas of the soul flung out to rising and orchestral gales…“ (R. Nathan) Magisterská práce s názvem Česko-ukrajinská terminologie sémantického pole Aerofony si klade za cíl analýzu české a ukrajinské hudební terminologie z jedné oblasti organologie, a to z oblasti dechových nástrojů z komparativního hlediska. Důvodem pro zvolení daného tématu je především osobní zájem o tuto problematiku. Protože sama hraji na knoflíkový akordeon a příležitostně učím děti i dospělé ovládat tento nástroj, který se podle obecně přijaté klasifikace řadí k aerofonům (tedy dechovým hudebním nástrojům), musím pro všechny termíny, které jsem dříve používala pouze ve svém rodném jazyce (ukrajinštině), jež se týkají jak stavby samotného nástroje, tak způsobů hry na něj, používat české ekvivalenty. Tato skutečnost mě přiměla k tomu, abych se zaměřila i na jiné dechové hudební nástroje, protože v české odborné literatuře zatím práce se stejnou nebo podobnou tematikou neexistuje. Kromě pedagogických pohnutek, bylo dalším důvodem pro zvolení výše uvedeného tématu pro mou magisterskou diplomovou práci rovněž areálové zaměření. Přesněji řečeno skrze zkoumání a porovnávání hudební terminologie pro české a ukrajinské dechové nástroje bude pravděpodobně čtenář moci nahlédnout do česko-ukrajinských hudebních vztahů ze specifického hlediska. Tato práce by mohla být zajímavá a přínosná pro všechny, kteří mají co do činění nejen s hudbou, ale také s terminologickou problematikou. Přirozeným výsledkem tohoto komparativního zkoumání se jeví vznik česko-ukrajinského slovníku s podtitulem Aerofony, kde by čtenář našel pojmy týkající se jak samotného pojmenování pro dechové nástroje současné i zaniklé a které se vyskytovaly nebo se stále vyskytují na území současné České republiky, jejich základní součásti, způsoby hry na ně a také pojmenování hráčů na jednotlivé dechové nástroje. Knight, Professor of Ethnomusicology Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, © 2015, Rev. 2017 Introduction The year 2015 marks the beginning of the second century for Hornbostel-Sachs, the venerable classification system for musical instruments, created by Erich M. von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs as Systematik der Musikinstrumente in 1914. In addition to pursuing their own interest in the subject, the authors were answering a need for museum scientists and musicologists to accurately identify musical instruments that were being brought to museums from around the globe. As a guiding principle for their classification, they focused on the mechanism by which an instrument sets the air in motion. The idea was not new. The Indian sage Bharata, working nearly 2000 years earlier, in compiling the knowledge of his era on dance, drama and music in the treatise Natyashastra, (ca. 200 C.E.) grouped musical instruments into four great classes, or vadya, based on this very idea: sushira, instruments you blow into; tata, instruments with strings to set the air in motion; avanaddha, instruments with membranes (i.e. drums), and ghana, instruments, usually of metal, that you strike. (This itemization and Bharata’s further discussion of the instruments is in Chapter 28 of the Natyashastra, first translated into English in 1961 by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: The Asiatic Society, v.2). The immediate predecessor of the Systematik was a catalog for a newly-acquired collection at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. The collection included a large number of instruments from India, and the curator, Victor-Charles Mahillon, familiar with the Indian four-part system, decided to apply it in preparing his catalog, published in 1880 (this is best documented by Nazir Jairazbhoy in Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology – see 1990 in the timeline below).

There is a wide range of advice and guidance available but it is important that any guidance given should be evidence- based and the sources of this evidence should be known. The aim of the study was to carry out a systematic literature review in order to gather historical as well as the most current and relevant information which could provide evidence-based guidance for performance practice. This literature was analysed in order to determine the evidence of risk attached to singing and brass , woodwind and bagpipe playing, in relation to the spread of airborne pathogens such as COVID-19, through droplets and aerosol.

  • CHERES Hailed to Be “The Best Purveyor of Authentic Ukrainian Folk
    CHERES Hailed to be “the best purveyor of authentic Ukrainian folk music in the United States” by the former head of the Archive of Folk Culture at the Library of Congress, Cheres brings to life melodies from the Carpathian mountains in Western Ukraine and neighboring Eastern European countries. Since its founding in 1990 by students of the Kyiv State Conservatory in the Ukraine, the ensemble has enthralled North American audiences with their rousing renditions of folk music performed on the cymbalum, violin, woodwinds, accordion, bass, and percussion. Virtuoso musicians join spirited dancers, all donned in traditional Western Ukrainian hand-embroidered garments, to paint a vivid picture of Ukrainian folk art. The musicians, most of whom are from Halychyna in western Ukraine, are united by an artistic vision to preserve their traditions. “Cheres” is actually a little known Ukrainian term for a metal- studded leather belt formerly used as a bulletproof vest during the Middle Ages. Today, the group Cheres has adopted this Medieval protective shield as their name to symbolize the safeguarding of vanishing folk art traditions from the Carpathian mountains. This seasoned ensemble has performed in nightclubs and concerts in New York City; music festivals in the Tri-State area, including Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors Festival in 2006 and Folk Parks in 2000, as well as colleges and universities on the east coast. Cheres has appeared on television on NBC’s Weekend Today show, as well as the Food Network’s Surprise! show. Tracks from their latest CD, Cheres: From the Mountains to the Steppe” have been played on WNYC’s New Sounds program, as well as other stations in the region.

    STANFORD UNIVERSITY, CCRMA Research Report: Hybrid Clarinet Project Romain Michon and John Granzow December 4, 2013 In the past thirty years we have seen a wide range of studies on the physical modeling of mu- sical instruments using the waveguide technique. We now have at our disposal sophisticated models encompassing a large array of musical instruments. While the waveguide technique is both efficient and allows for the creation of effective models, it remains dependent on the precise control of the parameters of the model as well as on the quality of the excitation that is used to drive them. Many works on the control of waveguide physical models and on the modeling of nonlinear excitations have been carried out. However, the link between these two parameters is generally understudied. Indeed, for most musical instruments, the excitation is the element that has the greatest num- ber of parameters to control and is thus the hardest element to model. The properties of the bore of a clarinet for example (but this also applies to most of the woodwind and brass in- struments) can only be modified by tone holes, that are very discrete controllers (they can be opened or closed or half closed in some cases). On the other hand, the interactions between the mouthpiece and the player are extremely complex and difficult to simulate on a computer. This problem has been addressed in many ways in the past with different solutions for almost every case. Yamaha, for example, created a breath controller that worked with the VL1 synthe- sizer series1. For violins, Esteban Maestre developed a technique where the parameters of the physical model are controlled by gesture data acquired from real world performers[3].
