UPPER BALD EAGLE VALLEY REGION LABOR FORCE DATA Upper Bald Eagle Valley has a strong labor force. Unemployment rates are low for most of the munici- palities. Education levels for High School Graduates are higher than state and national levels, but per- centages of Bachelor’s Degrees or Higher are slightly lower in retrospect. The low mean travel times, high percentages of residents driving to work, and high number of people in the labor force suggest that this is a residential region where workers commute to outlying regions. This presumption is reinforced by the low unemployment rates. Department of Education, 2001-2002; U.S. Census; 1990, 2000 UPPER BALD EAGLE VALLEY REGION HOUSING Housing in the Upper Bald Eagle Valley is characteristic of housing found throughout Centre County. The majority of homes in the region are valued in the $50,000- $99,000 range. Additionally, the majority of the homes are owner occupied and are single unit detached homes. The region’s second largest majority of homes are mo- bile homes. Another trend in the is the decrease in persons per housing unit. Since 1980 the number of housing units has increased by 25.5%, while the population has only in- creased by 9.7%. This trend is due to fewer people living together and family sizes decreasing. This trend is expected to continue, and will create a need for additional housing. Prepared by the Centre County Planning & Community Development Office, 2008 Source: U.S. Census; 1980, 1990, 2000 UPPER BALD EAGLE VALLEY REGION POPULATION In 2000, 5,038 people resided in the Upper Bald Eagle Valley Region, 3.7% of the County popula- tion. The number of residents rose more than 10% between 1990 and 2000 with most of the growth in Union and Worth Townships. The high growth is most likely due to the region’s prime location just outside of the county’s metro area that follows the trend of persons moving from town into the outlying areas. Port Matilda, which is also a metro area experienced the only drop in population with a 4.6% decrease. Union Township has the oldest population with 11% of its residents 65 years of age or older and a median age of 37. The region is one of the younger areas of the county with an elderly population of 11% and median ages between 34 and 38 years. Hispanics and minorities constituted a very small percentage of the population in all six municipalities (less than 1%).
