    Global Migrations Conference Biographies – July 2014 Dr David Alston Independent Researcher and Historian David is the chair of the local Harbour trust. He studied full time at the Universities of Aberdeen (M.A with First Class Honours in Mental Philosophy, 1970-77) and St Mary’s College, Newcastle (Certificate in Education with distinction, 1980-81) and also studied part time at the Universities of Leicester (Diploma in Museum studies, 1994) and Dundee (1999) where he completed his Ph.D. in Modern History. His current research focuses on the role of Highland Scots in the slave plantations of Guyana before emancipation in 1834. He is one of the first Scottish historians to draw attention to the prominent role of Scots in the slave trade and the plantation economies of the Caribbean. Dr Laurie Anderson Executive Director of Simon Fraser University, Vancouver Dr Anderson is also an adjunct professor in SFU's Faculty of Education, an Associate in SFU's Centre for Dialogue, and the Lead Facilitator for SFU's Public Square. Previously Dr Anderson spent 30 years with the Vancouver School Board as a teacher, principal, director, associate superintendent and interim superintendent of schools, and taught educational leadership programs for senior officials in Hong Kong, Beijing and Bangkok. Laurie obtained his BEd, MA and PhD at SFU. Most importantly, Laurie was born and raised in Rutherglen and emigrated to Vancouver in the '60s. Prof Colin Calloway Professor in the Departments of History and Native American Studies, Dartmouth College Colin Calloway chair holder of the John Kimball, Jr. 1943. He received his Ph.D.

Key elements in our work towards sustainability is social engagement, economy, and environment. As a major organizer, we want to be a role model in setting standards and routines that contri- bute to healthy lifestyles for individuals and the society as a whole. Aside from being proud of all the participants in the race I am extra proud of the organization ”HEJA Göteborg” that has running school programs for children in different parts of Gothenburg with our goal to expand the program to other areas. Runners participating in the races are contributing to various athletic clubs, with all the surplus from the races going direct to the athletic clubs and associations. Participants can even contribute to our sus- tainable efforts by recycling all waste, choosing one of the vegetarian alternatives offered in the race area and by choosing the most envi- ronmentally friendly form of transportation to and from the race. All of our 4000 volunteers and race officials will receive vegetarian food. A new addition for this year is that all of the participants can travel via public transportation two extra days during the week of the race.

    CEPAC Chester & Ellesmere Port AC THE BOXING DAY “ROUND THE WALLS" RACE CHESTER 1972-1996 A Brief History by John Driscoll 1 © John Driscoll Congratulations. the message to and from Dave Cowell and Margaret Ashcroft. 2 © John Driscoll "25 TIMES ROUND THE WALLS" (Title courtesy of Joe Shellhorn, President of CEPAC) A BRIEF HISTORY of the CHESTER "ROUND the WALLS" RACE Berwick has its "Running of the Walls" event; Carlisle for a few years had a race on its Racecourse. However, Chester has for 24 years had a unique event in its Boxing Day race combining the racecourse with the City Walls, even if for a few years the "Walls" section was confined to about 200 metres. It has been an event for which there are no course records as the route has shown many changes. In fact some runners would say that each year when they come along they do not know where exactly they are going to be running. On two occasions in its history, in addition to other changes, the route has had to be changed on the day due to weather conditions. The idea for the event was a letter in 1971 from Roy Lowe, a City Councillor, to the Town Clerk of Chester suggesting that Chester should have an event to compare with the Sao Paulo "Round the Houses" race. The suggestion was passed to the City Council's Public Services and Recreation Committee (chaired by Fred Hignett) who discussed the suggestion in June 1971 (by then titled the "Round the Walls" race) deferring a decision until the end of January 1972 when they agreed to pass the idea to the Chester Sports Advisory Council.
