    THE IMPACT OF PRIZE MONEY ON MARATHON PERFORMANCE AND ACCLAIM A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Colbert Heathcott March 2015 THE IMPACT OF PRIZE MONEY ON MARATHON PERFORMANCE AND ACCLAIM Colbert Heathcott March 2015 Economics Abstract In the past century, marathon running has become a major phenomenon in society. As a result, race participation and frequency have increased in the United States over the past decade. With the increased growth of the sport, the amount of money and the overall economic impact of races have risen, causing event organizers and sponsors to face decisions involving race awards and funding. Using an OLS regression model, this study examines the impact of prize money on marathon performance and acclaim. Results reveal marathon running to be exempt from incentive theory, as athletes do not perform better as a result of increases in winning prize money. Prize money also has no significant impact on the popularity of marathon events. Other factors, such as marathon location and history, significantly affect the acclaim of a marathon event. A thorough understanding on the impact of prize money is necessary for the future of the growing sport of marathon running. I can only guide them. ” —John Kellogg Preface The goal of this project was to compile as many of John Kellogg’s posts on LetsRun.com as possible. I profoundly admire his training advice and his knowledge, and applying his principles to my own training brought me to new heights as a runner. Why John Kellogg, and not any of the other highly-regarded figures in the running world who have posted on LetsRun.com over the years (Renato Canova, Nobby Hashizume, Jack Daniels, et al.)? Perhaps because of his mysterious, guru-like reputation, or perhaps because of the sheer difficulty of assembling the range of posts. I also felt that it had to be done, that it would be a great loss for this knowledge to fade into obscurity over the years. John Kellogg seems to revel in the anonymity of the internet, and has posted under probably dozens of different “handles” over the years. In all likelihood, the writings here represent only a fraction of his total contribution to the online running community. Though his words sometimes fell on deaf ears, the power of the internet preserved much of his writing.

    Olympians The University of Colorado has produced 60+ Olympians (through the 2008 Summer Games). The majority of the Olympians to come from the Boulder campus are former members of the Buffs’ esteemed ski teams, with alumni also competing in figure skating (2), bobsledding (1), equestrian (1), luge (3), basketball (3), cycling (1) while the following list of athletes have competed in track and field during the 20th Century. Ambassador David Bolen, Colorado’s first Olympian, finished fourth in the 400-m dash during the 1948 Summer Games in London, England. In his name, Colorado established the David Bolen Olympic Award in 1949, awarded to any current CU student-athlete who competes under the United States flag.
