LONGO German Aerospace Center (DLR) - Institute for Aerodynamics and Flow Technology, Lilienthalplatz 7, D-38108, Braunschweig,(1) [email protected], (2) [email protected] Summary The paper proposes a concept mission to Moon including a space-tug-vehicle in Moon orbit, a transfer surveillance/relay satellite into low lunar orbit, a Moon lander equipped with a rover for miscellaneous challenges and an Earth return spacecraft transporting Moon samples. To guaranty a low mission cost, trajectories of low impulse has been selected in combination of technologies like combined chemical-electrical propulsion; broad Ka–band/ X–band/ S-band transponder communication system and advanced solar arrays. The present analysis includes first global mass budgets for the lunar-space-tug-vehicle and its component modules and energy budgets for subsystems like the electric power supply and propellants. Also, here are defined the propulsion properties for the different modules. 1. Introduction AURORA is ESA’ long term technology program devoted to prepare human exploration mission to Mars. To achieve this goal, it is necessary previously to acquire knowledge and to improve the existing European technology level through robotic missions, where the Moon appears as an attractive platform for such tests. -

Introduction Advances in the development of high-temperature composite materials and coatings based on glass and ceramics were the basis for their application in aerospace and other branches of engineering. Carbon-ceramic composite materials (CCCM) have unique heat-shielding, erosion-resistant performance and durability at a low density. At present, composite material used as protective coatings of elements of aircraft gas turbine engines, turbopump assembly of liquid rocket engines, hypersonic technology products, tile protection of spacecraft, inserts the nozzle into a block of solid fuel engines and other technical fields, where the most acute problem of protection structure at high temperature in an oxidizing environment. In the MAI at the department #202 investigations in the development of small rocket engine thrusts. Ability to use CCCM as a material of the combustion chamber is considered as one of the most promising ways to improve small engines thrusts. 2. Overview of problems and problem statement Intention to apply the composite material (CM) to create a combustion chamber LRE of small thrust (LREST) associated with essential growth engine specific impulse, which characterizes its effectiveness. The first attempts to introduce carbon-carbon composites as a material for the combustion chamber LREST undertaken in the early-middle of the last decade [6]. However, the resulting designs are generally not meet one or more of the requirements for chamber LREST. -

Due to its weight, it would be economically infeasible to lift significant quantities of this essential resource into Earth orbit and beyond. A lunar colony becomes a much more feasible endeavor if there exist resources on the Moon that can be utilized in-situ. Missions such as NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and India’s Chandrayaan-1 have provided enticing evidence of lunar water ice present in the lunar poles. The objective of Project DIANA is to seek out potential locations of this valuable resource, confirm its existence, and to do so cost-effectively, under budget and within schedule. This mission’s success would provide a crucial stepping stone in the ultimate goal of establishing a Martian colony. The driving requirements for our mission design included the accurate quantification of water in two different lunar craters, overall mission cost under $500 M (FY17), maximized science return, and mission completion by the end of 2024.
