PIZZA-PASTA Lost and Found: It seems from all the items that have been found (01843) 823091 No77 High St, Minster lately that we ought to start a regular slot for this, but until we do can I just point out that items found in the Rec are normally kept with the Restaurant and Takeaway Groundsman, or he passes them on to us at MM, items found in and Friday & Saturday Heather around the village are usually handed in at the library or Attwells. So if you’ve misplaced items such as keys, mobile phones, skate from 5.30pm boards, clothing etc. then these are the people to try as you may be pleasantly surprised to find that your valuables are waiting for you to reclaim them. I was recently called by concerned neighbours about an elderly resident who they hadn’t seen for a while and they were worried for her safety. After doing some checks we discovered that she had been taken poorly and was in hospital. I’m pleased to say she is now back at home, but it shows how Hair important it is to be aware of these situations. by Finally, I was also informed of a small dog that had run off and after putting the word about it was impressive to see so many residents put themselves out to look for it. Recently, the media has picked up on the idea that switching to a vegetarian lifestyle would reduce the effects of global warming. Though the situation is more complicated than that, paying attention to where the food on your plate comes from can benefit the environment. Eco-Tip: Whether or not going completely vegetarian is the right choice for you (or the environment), balance out your weekly menu with one or two vegetarian meals and choose locally sourced meats and vegetables when you can to cut down on those food miles.

Dear Minster Matters, I refer to the Thanet Earth declaration printed in the September issue of MM. In the declaration it clearly states that half of the total water requirement for the site will be collected from the roofs of the greenhouses and stored in reservoirs. Also that Thanet earth will have ‘no impact’ on the local water supply. How can this be ? If the water collected from the roofs would normally have gone into the ground and therefore into the local water supply. I am informed that an inch of rain falling over an acre of land produces approximately 22,000 gallons of water, multiply this by the area of roofs then by the rainfall in inches and this will add up to quite a considerable amount of water, even taking into Travel Insurance account evaporation and plant absorption, when rain falls on crops. Dear Customers In the words of the famous Sir Terry Wogan - “Is it me”? Some of you, and ALL 821291 Paul Willins. West Ham supporters will NB: Are there any geologists out there who can describe the possible effects on chalk when deprived of water from rainfall ? know about the collapse of XL Leisure, Britain’s 3rd largest package tour operators, leaving 21 aircraft grounded MM note: The glasshouses are eventually expected to cover a total of 91 hectares according to Thanet Earths own website, and some 67,000 travellers stranded. which equates to 225 acres under glass, so according to the above DON’T WORRY !!! calculation that’s 4,950,000 gallons of water per inch of rain POST OFFICE TRAVEL INSURANCE that won’t then be available to our local water supply, plus Thanet offers this cover as standard Earth say this will see them through the whole summer, however, as they intend to operate 365 days a year the rest must then surely come from what’s then left of our dwindling local supply, which if TDC get their way will only be exacerbated even further if the China Gateway phases 2 and 3 get the go ahead.

VILLAGE SHOPS A photograph album about Minster shops was put together in the year 2000 by Don Wilks. This was very interesting to read. Since the year 2000 this album now proves to be very interesting in another way. Do you remember: The Village Kitchen, Salvation Army shop, Minster Meubles, Minster Hardware, Mini Market, Richmonds, Colebrook & Sturrock, Cliffords Glass, Pearson & Gore, Style by Penny, Minster Saddlery, Pet shop, Perfection Florists, Sunrise Estates, Village Taxis, Candipidy or Printing and Copy shop. All of these businesses have one thing in common - they’re gone !! Excluding the Village Bakery (which now only opens on a Saturday) that is 17 businesses closed in 8 years! Next time you pop to one of the shops because you forgot something ‘in town’, please stop and think when you last used it. Your village shops are constantly fighting for survival, they try to provide you with the goods you need at reasonable prices, they have to compete with the ‘big boys’. They provide a service you don’t get elsewhere, home deliveries, sponsorships, raffle prizes, people who care and worry about you, people willing to listen and just have a chat. Your shops are a constitution. I can only comment on the things we do at Attwells, we display posters for lost and found plus various village events. We sell tickets for the School fireworks, Flower Show Celeidh plus various dances and we provide a pick up point for Playhouse tickets. Our yard is used for decorating and storing over 40 Christmas trees each year, we donate prizes for local charities, we have petitions in the shop for you to sign when needed, we collect dog and cat food and money all year for rescue animals, we support the Flower Show Computer Installation & Repair in many ways, we organise Late Night Shopping, we’ve had various collections for many deserving causes and much much more. Web Design & Hosting All of the shops do their bit for the community and the village would Tuition available suffer if they were not there. on most popular packages Your shops are your village - it’s been said before and I’ll re-iterate “If you don’t use them, you’ll lose them!!” 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE 17 shops in 8 years, a fact, it’s your choice. 01843 821243/07739 486707 Karen Brazil www.minster.net

COMPUTER CORNER

The English language has a whole new set of words these days; most of us call it “computer jargon”. Kids today speak a very different language than we did when we were young (and I’m only 35!!). New words appear on an almost daily basis and I wonder whether even Bill Gates himself can keep up. I’m a great believer in plain English, so for this month’s piece I’ve translated some basic computer terms into some- thing a little bit friendlier. HARDWARE: Any physical mechanical part such as a printer, mouse The Saddler or keyboard. SOFTWARE: Programs or instructions that run on your computer to 7 Monkton Road, Minster make it work and do clever things. Word and Excel are examples of computer software. 01843 821331 DISK DRIVE: Places on your computer through which information is collected or recorded, such as the slots where you put in a CD or floppy Where A Warm Welcome disk. HARD DISK: An area inside your computer that keeps hold of from Jan & Mick information and instructions permanently, even when the computer is awaits you switched off. OPERATING SYSTEM: This manages all of your computer’s central Good Food, Local Real Ales activities, such as what happens when you turn it on. Windows XP and Vista are operating systems. Bat & Trap (Pitch for Hire) USB: The small rectangular plug at the end of perhaps your printer Pool Table lead or camera lead. It’s the computer’s version of a 3 pin electrical plug. Sponsors of Saddlers USB PORT: The socket on your computer that a USB needs to plug Sunday Football Team into. FILE: A letter, music track, picture or other item stored on your Regular Disco’s computer. Open all day on Friday, Saturday & Sunday FOLDER: Places on your computer to organise and keep your FILES. with normal hours Monday to Thursday HYPERLINK: When using the internet, this is a word or picture on your screen that you can click on to take you to a different internet page. MP3: Usually a music track that can be played on an MP3 Player or iPod. OK, so the above terms may seem quite basic to some people. For those of you who are more technically minded, try these ones for size: “Dolly the Sheep”, “Woot”, “Core Dump”, “Chips and Salsa”, “Memristor”, “Linkrot”, “Tele-immersion” and “Bit Stuffing”. Honestly, if there is anyone out there who knows straight away what all these mean, then we really do need to have a chat! Jackie Raines Mobile Office Services www.jackieraines.co.uk
