Chairman Takayuki Ikeda About Japan Business Machine and Information System Industries Association (JBMIA) Japan Business Machine and Information System Industries Association (JBMIA) is the industry organization which aims to contribute the development of the Japanese economy and the improvement of the office environment through the comprehensive development of the Japanese business machine and information system industries and rationalization thereof. The advancement of information technology has brought about sophistication of the age of digitalization and networking and resulted in significant changes in the office environment accordingly. In response to the shift of business emphasis from the hardware to total business solutions including products, JBMIA carries out active committee/group activities regarding important issues that the industries are confronting in and outside Japan by conducting investigations and researches regarding the new policy proposals, international cooperation, prevention of warming, environment preservation, standardization, product safety, etc., by deepening the association with the sales and software-related companies, as well as the manufacturers. It was not long after the beginning of the new year when the disease spread across the world and caused tremendous affliction on society and the economy. As the pandemic’s impact is considered heavier than that of the Lehman shock, we cannot anticipate at all when it will end amidst so many uncertainties. Under such circumstances, our industrial surroundings, be it public entities or private enterprises, entail social responsibility through SDGs and ESG investment. In the meantime, the surge of a data driven society and the diffusion of artificial intelligence as well as RPA (robotic process automation) are dynamically accelerating work style reform in Japan. Promoting teleworking as a measure to prevent the coronavirus will eventually speed up that trend. I would like to work on JBMIA’s activities, like before, to respond proactively to various needs generated through those environmental changes. Seeking for new value creation, aiming to become an association that contributes toward an innovative society. As the new chairman, I will focus on the following three points as JBMIA’s important themes. Firstly “Global business deployment to contribute to the promotion of SDGs”, secondly “Quick and timely response to social environmental changes”, thirdly “Further enhancement of JBMIA’s presence and operations”. In addition, I would like to deal with any kind of issue so as to implement the management philosophy of JBMIA: “Through continuous innovation of business machines and information systems, we suggest a new work style and create a global society with vitality.” I sincerely thank you in advance for your kind understanding and valuable support. MAIN ACTIVITIES AND RESULTS OF THE COMMITTEES AND GROUPS: INTRODUCTION OF MAIN ACTIVITIES As our basic policy and motto the JBMIA conducts agile business activities to contribute to the solutions of common key issues for the industries such as promotion of the digitalization and networking, dealing with the global environmental issues, and preparation for changes in users’ needs. Introduction of our activities Environment/recovery & recycling The environment related various activities such as trend research/handling of regulations in and outside Japan (recovery & recycling and contained chemical materials) and the environmental labels (eco marks, blue angels, etc.) concerning the products under the control of this association have been carried out. The copy machines & MDF group and 12 digital duplicator manufacturers play a central role in building the system to collect used trade-in machines of other companies in sales activities and to bring them to the collected machines exchange center and then to return them to the respective manufacturers. The reuse/recycling by members has been promoted through these activities and the joint logistics of collection of used machines contributes to the reduction of CO2 emission during the transportation. Standardization-related In addition to the standardization activities conducted by each committee/group, the standardization activities to improve the business machine accessibility and user interface and the standardization activities related to the color management have been promoted. The JBMS (the association standards) and the JBMIA-TR (the association standards report) which are the results of such activities are published on our homepage thereby the promotion and dissemination of the association standards have been carried out. Further, the JBMIA as a domestic review body for international standards of ISO and IEC actively conducts activities such as participations in international meetings and proposals of the international standards generated in Japan. Furthermore, we conduct activities to apply set/revised international standards to JIS thereby the promotion and dissemination of such standards have been carried out. International-related In the rapidly changing international environment, as to the global themes in relation to the WTO and APEC, the JBMIA promotes to solve various issues aiming at improvement of the advantage and quality of the industries through the researches and analyses of issues concerning the business operations. For example, the JBMIA has been working on for a long time taking the case of the MFD tax to the WTO. BMLinkS project The JBMIA is coping with the development and use environment of the interface specifications the “BMLinkS” which are able to dramatically improve the connectivity and data compatibility among business machines on the network. In 2006, we have realized the documents distribution infrastructure which is easily able to use scan/storage/print function among business machines of multi-vendors through preparing various industries’ standards and publishing common software including the “comprehensive printer driver”. Furthermore, we promote activities step by step with the purpose of improving convenience of users and IT manager, etc., by publishing the industries’ standards for the office devices in 2008 and by publishing the industries’ standards for the information markings in 2010. 4 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Chairman Takayuki Ikeda Adviser to the Board, TOSHIBA TEC CORPORATION Senior Vice Chairman Kouichi Tamai President and Representative Director, Fuji Xerox Co.,Ltd. In this report, we examine the 2013 office-equipment demand outlook and the positioning of individual companies in the current market environment. ■ Focal points: The office labor equipment ratios for the US and Western Europe are diverging as the ratio has been falling in the US since 2010 while holding near peak levels in Western Europe. The divergence is related to regional differences in (1) the number of large enterprises, (2) the speed of tablet PC diffusion, and (3) the ratio of color multifunction printers. However, tablet PC diffusion in Western Europe is likely to pick up in 2013, raising the probability of a change in office environments that should push down the region’s labor equipment ratio.

  • Facilitation of Information Transfer on Chemicals in Products
Facilitation of Information Transfer on Chemicals in Products The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) developed ‘chemSHERPA’ [kémʃéərpə] as a new information transfer scheme for chemicals in products throughout their supply chains. METI hopes that the dissemination of chemSHERPA may contribute to reduce the workload of both providers and recipients of the information. From the beginning of the development of chemSHERPA, METI has been in communication with international bodies such as the IEC and the IPC, etc., with the aim of developing chemSHERPA into not only a Japanese standard but also an International standard. To make it a de-facto standard, METI has introduced this scheme to international organizations and governments of other countries for their active use. The Joint Article Management Promotion Consortium (JAMP) is a governing body for chemSHERPA from April 2016 and see a shift to chemSHERPA. We believe many companies are preparing towards implementing chemSHERPA. Based on the efforts mentioned above, the following companies and company groups have agreed with the dissemination of chemSHERPA, and METI will continue to work with JAMP and companies to spread the use of chemSHERPA to internal as well as external supply chains as needed.(Please contact us if any company or company group has interest in putting its name below.) We believe many companies will begin advance preparations towards implementing chemSHERPA.
