The paper will appear in the fall 2017 issue of ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment Speciesism Party: a vegan critique of Sausage Party This paper provides a critical vegan reading of the comedy animation film Sausage Party (2016), directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan and starring Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig. Such a reading is situated within an emerging vegan studies framework (Wright 2015) that is sensitive to the reproduction of unequal power relations between humans and other species, but also how those power inequalities intersect with intra-human power relations along the lines of gender, sexuality, “race,” age, class, different experiences of embodiment and so on. Sociologist Erika Cudworth argues that “[w]e need as full an analysis of social intersectionality as we are capable of,” so that the critical focus remains on “relational systems of power” (Cudworth 2015, 101). Cudworth (2011) also introduced the concept of anthroparchy, to signify the human domination of nature, with “nature” including but not limited to other animals. In that context, Sausage Party perpetuates anthroparchy, in so far as it normalizes the consumption of “animal products” for the audience. -

The Vegan Society’s history provides a case study on the ways in which social movements negotiate dif- ference and conflict. Specifically, this article highlights the challenges of identity, professionalization, and factionalism across the 20th and 21st centuries. This research also puts into perspective the cultural impact that veganism has had on Western society, namely the dramatic increase in vegan con- sumers, vegan products, and the normalcy of vegan nutrition. -

M/C Journal, Vol 22, No 2 (2019) Being a Bad Vegan Lelia Green Abstract According to The Betoota Advocate (Parker), a CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) paper has recently established that “it takes roughly seven minutes on average for a vegan to tell you that they’re vegan” (qtd. in Harrington et al. 135). For such a statement to have currency as a joke means that it is grounded in a shared experience of being vegan on the one hand, and of encountering vegans on the other. Why should vegans feel such a need to justify themselves? I recognise the observation as being true of me, and this article is one way to explore this perspective: writing to find out what I currently only intuit. As Richardson notes (516), writing is “a way of ‘knowing’—a method of discovery and analysis. By writing in different ways, we discover new aspects of our topic and our relationship to it. Veganism as Affirmative Biopolitics: Moving Towards A Posthumanist Ethics? Eva Giraud Animal studies, as an academic field, emerged from a conceptual and political demand to re-evaluate (and potentially contest) existing human-animal relations, by creating new ethical frameworks that do not automatically privilege the human.1 Recent theoretical trends in the field, however, have led to criticisms that it has betrayed this original aim. The most pointed criticism is that the field’s engagement with posthumanist concepts, which ostensibly de-centre the human and dislodge the epistemological structures of humanist thought, have (paradoxically) resulted in the emergence of a new, subtle form of anthropocentrism that is difficult to challenge.2 Thinkers from Critical Animal Studies (CAS), for instance, have suggested that influential theorists, such as Donna Haraway, have led to the depoliticization of animal studies by leaving cultural practices that treat animals as “legitimately” exploitable intact (including meat consumption and animal breeding), while displacing the conceptual frameworks that have conventionally been used to contest these practices (namely animal rights discourses).3 The problem is that critical arguments such as this tend to be by-passed without full consideration. Thinkers from the wider field of animal studies, for instance, have argued that CAS perspectives are grounded in totalising rights discourses, which derive from a humanist lineage and are thus intrinsically anthropocentric, undercutting their intended purpose.4 In sum, these debates have resulted in tensions between “mainstream” and critical animal studies, which hinge on questions of rights. Atheism in the American Animal Rights Movement: An Invisible Majority COREY LEE WRENN School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research Cornwallis North East University of Kent Canterbury, Kent Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Previous research has alluded to the predominance of atheism in participant pools of the Nonhuman Animal rights movement (Galvin and Herzog 1992; Guither 1998), as well as the correlation between atheism and support for anti-speciesism (Gabriel et al. 2012; The Humane League 2014), but no study to date has independently examined this demographic. This article presents a profile of 210 atheists and agnostics, derived from a larger survey of 287 American vegans conducted in early 2017. Results demonstrate that atheists constitute one of the movement’s largest demographics, and that atheist and agnostic vegans are more likely to adopt veganism out of concern for other animals. While these vegans did not register a higher level of social movement participation than religious vegans, they were more intersectionally oriented and more likely to politically identify with the far left. Given the Nonhuman Animal rights movement’s overall failure to target atheists, these findings suggest a strategic oversight in overlooking the movement’s potentially most receptive demographic. Users are spending more and more time on these platforms, creating an active and passive digital footprint through their interaction. This footprint has high research potential in many research areas because understanding people’s communication on social media is essential in understanding their values, attitudes, experi- ences and behaviors. Researchers found that the use of social networking sites impacts adolescents’ eating behavior. If we define adolescents as individuals between ages 10 and 24 (WHO’s definition), 76% of USA young people at age 18–24 use Instagram, so the Instagram social network analysis is important for understanding young people’s expressions in the context of healthy food. This study aims to identify the main topic associated with healthy food on the Instagram social network via hashtag and community analysis based on 2,045,653 messages created by 427,936 individual users. Vegetarianism in the West is an area where these tensions come into play. It is frequently conceptualized as an individual-level decision driven by concerns for animal rights, personal health, the environment, world hunger, and spirituality. However, because meals are often shared experiences, vegetarianism decisively affects friendships and family relationships. Little is known about the social implications of such dietary change, particularly outside of advanced industrialized countries. Even less is known about vegetarianism in Argentina, where beef consumption has historically been the world’s highest and the culinary tradition of the asado (≈ barbecue) forms an integral part of the national identity. This case study adopts a qualitative approach to examine vegetarianism as it is practiced in a meat-dominant cultural context of the Global South. -

214 BETWEEN THE SPECIES Heganism ABSTRACT An emblematic association exists between meat consumption and the gender identity hegemonic masculinity. This association is so strong that men who pursue meatless diets (especially vegans) are likely to be socially ostracized. Heganism is a diet/gender identity that aims to reconstruct hegemonic masculinity with the goal of removing these stigmas attached to male veganism. Yet heganism fails to do this, and, in fact, worsens the marginalization of male vegans. Therefore, heganism ought to be rejected. Instead, an alternative option for reducing the marginalization of male vegans could be found in the emergent literature on non-hegemonic masculinities. By rejecting hegemonic masculinity and publicizing the range of other masculine identities that exist, there is an opportunity for men to utilize their agency and interpret masculinity in their own way–especially with regards to dietary preference. In this way, focusing on non-hegemon- ic masculinities offers an encouraging avenue for reducing the social stigmas attached to male veganism. Thomas E. Specifically, this article aims to explain the social con- ditions that gave meaning to the ideas that heganism intended to describe and embody, and, furthermore, explore whether these ideas are valuable. Coined by Kathleen Pierce in her 2010 Boston Globe article, heganism is a linguistic mix of the pro- noun “he” and “veganism”. The term sought to describe and embody a set of ideas that challenged the social stigmas faced by male vegans, especially in Anglo-American and Western European cultures.
