Gagne University of California, Berkeley INTRODUCTION This paper is based on collections of leaf bugs assembled in 1964 by the ex- pedition of the University of California-Galapagos International Scientific Project. The types are deposited in the collections of the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco. Some paratypes are retained in the collections of R. L. Usinger and WV. C. Gagne, both of the University of California, Berkeley, and of J. C. M. Carvalho. The original manuscript was prepared by J. C. M. Carvalho on the basis of material sent in 1965. After the manuscript and the specimens were returned from Rio de Janeiro, additional specimens were discovered in the unmounted material from the same expedition, in the California Academy of Sciences. Amongst this material were nine additional new species, the previously unknown females of three species described by Carvalho, and additional distribution records of almost every other species. All of these have been incorporated into the manuscript by Gagne and are so indicated or noted as "Additional specimens." The new material is the sole responsibility of Gagne, though it was added with the consent of Carvalho. Box 346, Stoneville, MS 38776 2Mississippi State University, Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology Clay Lyle Building, Mississippi State, MS 39762 ABSTRACT Throughout 1994-2000, adult beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) populations were monitored in the delta and hill regions of Mississippi using pheromone traps. Signifi- cant differences in the mean number of moths trapped were found among different geo- graphical areas of the state. A trend was observed where the greatest number of moths was found in the Mississippi Delta, located in the western region of the state. The lowest number of moths was found in the hills located in the eastern region of the state. An annual profile of beet armyworm populations in the western section of the Mississippi Delta also revealed that wide-scale immigration of this pest typically begins at 200 Julian days (mid-July). This date could be used as a benchmark to determine when and if population levels are high enough to have the potential to cause economic damage to crops in the Mississippi Delta. Arthropods Associated with Above-Ground Portions of the Invasive Tree, Melaleuca Quinquenervia, in South Florida, Usa

PRATT, MIN B. RAYAMAJHI AND TED D. CENTER USDA-ARS, Invasive Plant Research Laboratory, 3205 College Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33314 ABSTRACT Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S. T. Blake, the broad-leaved paperbark tree, has invaded ca. 202,000 ha in Florida, including portions of the Everglades National Park. We performed prerelease surveys in south Florida to determine if native or accidentally introduced arthro- pods exploit this invasive plant species and assess the potential for higher trophic levels to interfere with the establishment and success of future biological control agents. Herein we quantify the abundance of arthropods present on the above-ground portions of saplings and small M. quinquenervia trees at four sites. Only eight of the 328 arthropods collected were observed feeding on M. quinquenervia. Among the arthropods collected in the plants adven- tive range, 19 species are agricultural or horticultural pests. The high percentage of rare species (72.0%), presumed to be transient or merely resting on the foliage, and the paucity of species observed feeding on the weed, suggests that future biological control agents will face little if any competition from pre-existing plant-feeding arthropods. Nosotros realizamos sondeos preliminares en el sur de la Florida para determinar si los artópodos nativos o accidental- mente introducidos explotan esta especie de planta invasora y evaluar el potencial de los ni- veles tróficos superiores para interferir con el establecimento y éxito de futuros agentes de control biológico. -

Insects that live in the saltwater and brackish marshes, which fringe the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, are largely unstudied. During 2011–2013, a survey of insect fauna of the coastal salt marshes of the Mississippi Delta in Louisiana was conducted. We present the species of terrestrial representatives of Heteroptera and Auchenorrhyncha collected during that study. Te Auchenorrhyncha are represented by 33 species in 6 families, with Cicadellidae (16 species) and Delphacidae (13 spp.), and are the most diverse. Te terrestrial heteropterans are represented by 11 species in 5 families with the majority of species in Miridae (6 spp.). A list of species, annotated with numbers of specimens collected, ranges of collection dates (seasonality), and published information on their hosts, habitats, and ranges, is presented. -

I. INTRODUCCIÓN El palto es un cultivo importante tanto para regiones tropicales como subtropicales, cuyo manejo junto con otros frutales como el mango y la uva, está siendo orientado principalmente al mercado de exportación. La producción se ha venido incrementando gracias a las condiciones climáticas, que en los últimos siete años han favorecido la entrada en producción de más de 800 ha. de campos nuevos, existiendo además, más de 3 000 ha. destinadas al cultivo de este fruto, sólo en el valle Virú. Entre las variedades comerciales de mayor importancia están: Fuerte, Pinkerton, Bacon, Ettinger y Hass; ésta última es la más comercializada y la mayor cultivada en el valle Virú (Franciosi, 2003; Salazar- García y Lovatt, 2002; Portal agrario, 1999) El palto es afectado por plagas y enfermedades que reducen la capacidad reproductiva. Las plagas insectiles más comunes en la costa norte del Perú son: Aleurodicus cocois “mosca blanca gigante”, Oligonychus punicae “arañita marrón del palto”, Oiketicus kirbyi “bicho del cesto”, Sabulodes caberata “medidor verde”, Oxydia sp. “medidor marrón”, Fiorinia fioriniae “queresa diaspina”, Protopulvinaria pyriformis “queresa acorazonada” y Haemiberlesia lataniae “queresa latania” (Alata, 1973;*) En las condiciones especiales del valle Virú, se ha presentado en los tres últimos años una plaga que afecta la inflorescencia y el cuajado de frutos, por lo que la planta reduce significativamente la producción.
