KT WOODARD SPORTS COMPLEX

“Creating a Championship Community Athletic Complex and Providing More Opportunities for the Students of Maize to be Successful” HISTORY

Opening in 1939, Maize High School has served as on of the prominent rural school districts in western Sedgwick for over eight decades. Give the agricultural roots of the district’s population, dad’s, granddad’s, and great granddads are among the alumni of a given graduating class. However, with the rapid movement of the Wichita population to the western suburbs, Maize has grown from a little town out in the country to a city in its own right with its boundary push directly up against the Wichita City Limits. Just a decade ago Maize High School had an enrollment or 350 students. Today we have just open a second high school with a total high school enrollment of over 2200 students (600% increase in 10 years).

The growth student population doesn’t look to slow down. In fact, our projections suggest that we will continue to see double digit student population growth over the next five years. As a school district, our number one priority to offer the highest quality education with the most high trained staff, and to provide the most state-of-the-art facilities to deliver that instruction. We are confident we are keeping up with the priority. Where we are having some challenge keeping up with the rapid growth is in some of our auxiliary facilities, namely several of the athletic venues. We offer the entire compliment of activities governed by the State High School Activities Association, and our participation rate of our student body is high. We are fortunate to have many good facilites in place currently. But as enrollments rise and usage increase, and with that advent affordable artificial surfaces, it is time for us to update some of our current venues.

The Need

Some of the current athletic stadiums have not had upgrades since they have been built. Quite frankly they are beginning to show their age and cannot accommodate modern technology. As our enrollment increases, the current facilities, especially the natural fields, are not able to keep up with the demand. And future water availability will always be a concern. Locker rooms and training rooms are distance from the facilities. Improvements in the stadiums, surroundings, and the turf for football, soccer, and with benefit the school in a variety of was. Educationally, physical education classes for training year round. From heath and safety standpoint, training rooms at the field provide better safety services for student and student athletes. The upgrades in stadium lighting, seating and turf would modernize facilities to be competitive with other in the league and would make Maize an attractive host for State Championship Events. Moving to artificial turf with reduces can provide for a safer playing surface, reduces water usage, and eliminates fertilizer. Programs such as the Marching Band, lacrosse, and intramurals, that have previous had limited availability to field usage, will now have a greater opportunity. And the facility upgrades would allow for an increased partnership with the Maize Recreation Department, community group/event sponsorship, and multi- day events.
