AaSTRACT "Ch* the Spirit and the Chu& in Modern Orthodox Theology: A Cornpuison of Georges Florovsky, Viadimu Lossky, Nikos NDsiotU and John Zizioulu" by Jerry Z Slorn Doaor of Philosophy in Tbeology, Facdty of Theology, University of St. Michad's CoUege (1998) This dissertation compares the ecclesiologies of Georges Florovsky (1 893-1 979, Vladimir Lossky (1903-1958), Nios Nissotis (19241986) and John Zizioulas (193 1- ) in temx of their trinitarian theologies, as wd as their synthesis between christ01ogy and pneumatoIogy. There are two paralle1 dimensions to this study. The fkst is what 1 have dedthe "trinitarian synthesis," and the second is the "ecc1esioIogicaisynthesis." The "trinitarian synthesis" reférs to the symbiosis beîween pneumatology and christology. It asks whether or not there exists some theoIo@caiemphases toward christology or pneumatology. The topic thus concems the question of a "simultaneity" or of a "priority" of either christology or pneumatology, as weiI as the "content"of these theologies. Rimarily addressed is the theology of the economic Trinity, hence its role in the economy of salvation, but the questions are nevertheless grounded and influenced by each theologian's respective theologies of the immanent (theulogical) Trinity. Because of the signifïcance for contemporary eauneniSm, 1also note the degree to which each theolo&t.ndeveloped the theological concept of communion (RoinQiia)or used it in his theology. Of related interest is whether or not each theologianls theo1ogy permined him to speak of Christ as a üi "corporatepason," as the one doseide encornpasses being both the *onemas well as the "many." The "ecclesioIopicai synthesis," the second dimension of this study, examines how each theologian's "trinitariansynthesisn uhimately impacted theway in which they constnicted and explaineci thek theologies of the Church (ecclesiology). In 0th wordq I apply th& christologies and pneumatologies to ecclesiology, and the result is what 1 have cded the "ecciesiologicalsynthesis." To illustrate the implications of these SimiIarities and diffaences in the "ecclesiological synthesis," 1 mention their notions of time and eschatology, wide also refeRiLlg to their undastanding of Baptism and the Eucharist, ministry, and the marlcr of the Church. 1 also indiate the degree to which each theologian spoke of the "presenceRof Christ and the Spirit in the economy of Mon,and how this is relaîed to the notion of the church as an "eveat." 1 was boni into this world at an institution aamed der St. Michaei, and now an institution bearing the name of the same patron will send me into the worid in a miaistry ofteaching.     DOI: 10.29357/2521-179X.2021.v19.1.1 DIVINE INCOMPREHENSIBILITY IN EASTERN ORTHODOXY AND REFORMED THEOLOGY Tim Shimko Westminster Seminary, Sacramento, California, USA Introduction Theology, in its most basic and fundamental form, is the study of God. Before God can be studied, a pressing question must be engaged – can God be studied? Various answers have been given to this question. In this paper, however, two views will be analyzed; both begin with the fundamental tenet that God is incomprehensible. A striking difference, however, arises in the manner by which God can be known. On the one hand, Eastern Orthodoxy, especially in its more contemporary form as presented by Vladimir Lossky and John Meyendorff, views that a mystical experience is theology par excellence. On the other hand, in Reformed theology God can and should be known intellectually, but this knowledge is analogical. Though both begin with the same fundamental tenet, both arrive at two different conclusions. Not only are the conclusions different, the entire structure and paradigm of these two systems are different. Due to the different views of how God can be known, both have striking differences in anthropology, Christology, and pneumatology. The two different views and their resultant paradigms will be explored in this paper. Eastern Orthodox Position The Eastern Orthodox position begins, as was mentioned, with the fundamental tenet that God is incomprehensible. God is eternal and uncreated, while creation was made from nothing. It was not made from his essence, but by his mere command – he spoke and creation came into being. In the act of creation, therefore, there exists a fundamental difference between God and that which he created.

    Logos: A Journal of Eastern Christian Studies Vol. 54 (2013) Nos. 1–2, pp. 13–32 On the Acquisition of the Holy Spirit: Sergius Bulgakov and the Theotokos Walter Sisto Abstract (Українське резюме на ст. 32) The pneumatology and Mariology of Sergius Bulgakov, widely believed to be the most important Russian theologian of the twentieth century, is here examined to discover the links between the Holy Spirit and the Mother of God, and the implications for the divinization of humanity, especially as we share in the sufferings of Mary and Christ, and “so complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.” These connections are developed in Bulgakov’s controversial sophiology whose de- velopment and implications for both Trinitarian theology and ecumenical methodology are discussed. Few scholars have taken note of the importance of the Mother of God in Sergius Bulgakov’s sophiology.1 Although Sergius Bulgakov (1871–1944) published only a few articles on Mary and one book The Burning Bush, Mary is an all- embracing figure within his thought.     Teresa Obolevitch The Pontifical University of John Paul II, Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (Krakow, Poland) Faith and Knowledge in the Thought of Georges Florovsky Georges Vasil’evich Florovsky was one of the most prominent theo- logians and philosophers of the 20th century . He is known not only in Russia, but also abroad (in Western Europe and USA), primarily as an author of the neopatristic synthesis – a project of renewing of thought of the Church Fathers in the 20th century and its adaptation to mod- ern philosophico-theological issues. In this article we will discuss the question of the relationship between knowledge and faith, philoso- phy (and science) and theology that was the integral part of the afore- mentioned synthesis . Science and religion Florovsky had been interested in philosophy and theology as well as in science since his youth . During his studies at the Historico-philo- logical Faculty of Novorossiysk University in Odessa he strove, on the one hand, to achieve the mystical unity with God, and, on the other, he undertook rational and empirical research . Quotations from the Greek have here been transliterated. I. Revelation There are two aspects of religious knowledge: Revelation and Experience. Revelation is the voice of God speaking to man. And man hears this voice, listens to it, accepts the Word of God and understands it. It is precisely for this purpose that God speaks; that man should hear him. By Revelation in the proper sense, we understand precisely this word of God as it is heard. Holy Scripture is the written record of the Revelation which has been heard. And however one may interpret the inspired character of Scripture, it must be acknowledged that Scripture preserves for us and presents to us the voice of God in the language of man. It presents to us the word of God Just as it resounded in the receptive soul of man. Revelation is theophany. God descends to man and reveals himself to man. And man sees and beholds God. And he describes what he sees and hears; he testifies to what has been revealed to him. The greatest mystery and miracle of the Bible consists of the fact that it is the Word of God in the language of man. Some twenty years ago a slim publication appeared with the title The Good Cuppa Guide. It described places, varying from the Ritz to stalls in the East End, where a satisfying cup of tea might be procured. Among other establishments the author, Jonathan Routh, visited the Surrey Room Restaurant at Waterloo Station, where at that time – now, alas, all has changed – it was possible to have tea served by a uniformed waitress at a table with a linen cloth and a linen napkin. „I was met as I entered it‟, records the author, „by a lady who asked “Are you one person?” which I found difficult to deny, so she escorted me to a table for one‟. In due course he was brought tea, toast, bread-and-butter, jam and „some slightly Fruit Cake‟. „I consumed all this while deliberating upon her original question […]. Was she in the habit of receiving visitations from persons who suddenly proclaimed that they were „Three-in-One and One-in-Three‟ and demanded bigger tables?‟1 What are we to make of Jonathan Routh‟s reflection in the Surrey Room Restaurant? „Three-in-One and One-in-Three‟: is this no more than a conundrum, a theological riddle, or does it radically affect our entire religious experience? What difference does it actually make to us as Christians that, unlike Jews and Muslims, we are not simply monotheists, nor yet are we polytheists, but we see in God both complete unity and genuine personal diversity? Commenting on the current neglect of the Trinity in the West, Karl Rahner is scarcely exaggerating when he observes: Christians, for all their orthodox profession of faith in the Trinity, are almost just „monotheist‟ in their actual religious experience.

    FOUNDATIONS FOR JOHN ZIZIOULAS’ APPROACH TO ECCLESIAL COMMUNION John Zizioulas’ work is appealing; he is a sourcier of fresh views on the Church as a communion1. The evaluation of his contributions is prob- lematic. Zizioulas has not presented a synthesis of his contributions2. The topics treated were usually prepared for conferences or theological com- missions. This prompted their publication rather than a clear personal ini- tiative by Zizioulas’ to engage the reader in the development of his ecclesiology and clarify for the reader the consistent theological founda- tions which guide the way he addresses questions. There is a risk of en- gaging the work of Zizioulas without attention to the foundations which shape a particular contribution. This article proposes three foundations which direct the construction of the ecclesiology of John Zizioulas: an ontological, eschatological and epistemological foundation. The ontological foundation is rooted in the difference between creator and creation resulting in the ontological im- portance of salvation. The foundation relative to the eschatological truth in history determines the way salvation is realized in historical and ecclesial events without implicating by this historicity a historical causal- ity. East- ern and Western Christians live amidst the same secularism, consumerist materialism and other negative influences. On the other hand, one can perceive the hunger of many for spirituality, care for the poor, a rejection of racism and other forms of hatred and injustice. Among the especially positive phenomena one can no- tice: the creation of hierarchies for Eastern Catholics in the “New World”, financial and other types of assistance from Roman Catholics for the often poorer Eastern Christians, a raising of the level of scholarship in the field of Eastern Christian Studies, the creation of the Committee on the Rela- tionship between Eastern and Latin Catholic Churches at the NCCB, the establishment of Eastern Catholic Associates (which brings together all Eastern Catholic hierarchs of the U.S.A.) and the publication of certain much-needed docu- ments. Still, there are some issues which require further work. On Monday last an election for municipal officers took place in this city, which resulted in the success of the Democratic-convention nominations, with only a few exceptions. Not only throughout the State of Ohio has the excitement attending this election been known, but papers at the most distant points of the country, have indulged on commentaries in no way complimentary to the Catholics. Now be it known to all to whom these presents shall come, that all the Catholics did was to petition the legislature to amend the school laws, so that Catholic children could attend the schools without sacrifice of the rights of conscience!! This was all our guilt, and we have been repaid by such a deluge of Protestant abuse, misrepresentations and calumny, that we firmly believe the like was never known before in the United States. Editors, preachers, fanatics, loafers, panacea vendors, and quack doctors kept up an assault of such a universal character, that all sorts of style were used at once, all sorts of filth projected against us, all sorts of lies invented, all sorts of insults heaped upon our heads, until it seemed as if the Devil himself was for once exhausted and malignity could do no more. The election day came and the authors of all this insane bigotry and abuse were swept like dust before the power of he people. 392.
