Religion, State & Society, Vol. 28, No. 1,2000 Catholic and Anti-Catholic Traditions in Russia* SERGEI FILATOV & L YUDMILA VORONTSOVA After an absence of almost 50 years, Catholicism once more exists on Russian soil. Despite the religious diversity of our society and the religious eclecticism of the majority of our contemporaries, no other religious confession appears to arouse such passionate emotions and often indeed outright hostility. Anti-Catholic intolerance cannot simply be explained in the context of a general intolerance of believers of other faiths. Russia now has Muslims, Buddhists and even Protestants, who have encountered difficulties mainly due to their missionary activity. It would seem that the phenomenon of Russian Catholicism today can be explained only if we understand the nature of the problem: what is Catholicism in the context of Russian spiritual and political culture and what does conversion to Catholicism mean to a Russian? In early years Russia was open to both Greek and Roman missionaries. At the end of the tenth century the adoption of one particular faith was not made on the basis of its dogma: the differences between Western and Eastern Christianity were simply beyond the understanding of the unsophisticated population of Ancient Rus', unversed as it was in questions of theology. The new faith was received on the basis of its cultural traditions and the attractiveness of its ceremonies. It was not so much the teaching of this faith which attracted, rather the appeal and 'beauty' of the ritual: indeed the cultural component was the determining factor in the attitude of the Russian people towards Catholicism. -

Lev Karsavin was born in Saint Petersburg in 1882. His family belonged not to the intelligentsia, but to the artistic milieu: his father was principal dancer at the Mariinsky Theatre, the Saint Petersburg opera house, and his sister Tamara Karsavina became a famous ballerina and went on to dance with Nijinsky 1 . Karsavin himself studied at the Faculty of History and Philology under the distinguished professor Ivan Mikhailovitch Grevs, and was to become one of the most outstanding historians of the Saint Petersburg school, and a specialist on medieval Western spirituality. -

A CONFESSION OF FAITH Against Ecumenism From a Convention of Orthodox Clergymen and Monks Greece, April 2009 Those of us who by the Grace of God have been raised with the dogmas of piety and who follow in everything the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, believe that: The sole path to salvation of mankind1 is the faith in the Holy Trinity, the work and the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, and their continuance within His Body, the Holy Church. Christ is the only true Light;2 there are no other lights to illuminate us, nor any other names that can save us: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”3 All other beliefs, all religions that ignore and do not confess Christ “having come in the flesh,”4 are human creations and works of the evil one,5 which do not lead to the true knowledge of God and rebirth through divine Baptism, but instead, mislead men and lead them to perdition. As Christians who believe in the Holy Trinity, we do not have the same God as any of the religions, nor with the so-called monotheistic religions, Judaism and Mohammedanism, which do not believe in the Holy Trinity. For two thousand years, the one Church which Christ founded and the Holy Spirit has guided has remained stable and unshakeable in the salvific Truth that was taught by Christ, delivered by the Holy Apostles and preserved by the Holy Fathers. She did not buckle under the cruel persecutions by the Judeans initially or by idolaters later, during the first three centuries. -

(© Patrick Barnes, 1999, 2004) Appendix I: An Extended Critique of Ecumenist Reasoning Preliminary Remarks Before beginning our analysis, a few words need to be said about the term “ecumenist.” First, we Orthodox opposed to the more aberrant forms of ecumenism are not against ecumenism in its true and proper form—i.e., activities proper to the Apostolic mark of the Church (to be “sent out”), conducted in ways that do not violate Orthodox canonical guidelines. “Ecumenist” and “ecumenism” carry both positive and negative connotations which should be respectively qualified by words such as “true“ or “political“. In this book “ecumenist” is employed in its negative connotation, referring to a person “infected“ with what the Holy Fathers call the bacterium of an ecclesiological heresy. The chief symptoms of this disease are statements and activities that contradict or compromise the unity and uniqueness of the Church, and which expand Her boundaries in ways that are foreign to Her self-understanding. At an advanced stage, these symptoms often include an open espousal of various forms of the heretical Branch Theory of the Church, accompanied by an open disdain for those Faithful who stand opposed to the erosion of Holy Tradition and the Patristic mindset which so often characterizes Orthodox involvement in the ecumenical movement. -

Remarkably its historical governance structure, Tethos, and mission have survived largely intact.2 The Order’s origins date back to the middle of the eleventh century when a hospice for pilgrims run by the religious community of Saint Mary of the Latins was established. Instructor: Dr. Joel Brady Course Description This course is designed as an overview of the history, teachings and rituals of Eastern Orthodox Christianity in its multinational context. Geographically, this context refers primarily to southeastern Europe, Russia and the coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean, but there is also a significant Orthodox diaspora in the western hemisphere and in other parts of the world. We shall examine specific historical experience of Orthodox Christians in its Byzantine context, under Ottoman rule, in Slavic lands, under communism, and beyond. We consider the broader context of Eastern Christianity (including Oriental Orthodoxy, the Church of the East, and Eastern Catholicism), as well as relations with Western Catholic and Protestant Christianity, and other religions and systems of belief (e.g., Judaism, Islam, atheism). Through lectures, readings, discussions, films, and a field trip to a local Orthodox church, students will gain an insight into multifaceted world of Orthodox Christianity: its spiritual practices and rich artistic, musical and ritual expressions. Course Learning Objectives By the end of this course, you will be able to…. Identify key terms, concepts, themes, and people in the history of Orthodox Christianity and situate them within a broad temporal, geographical, and confessional framework. Articulate the connection(s) between Orthodox Christian doctrine and practice. Analyze the historical relationships and interactions between Eastern Orthodox Christianity, on the one hand, and on the other hand, other forms of Christianity, other religions, and various secular movements.
