Thermal Preferenda of the Red-rimmed Melania (Melanoides tuberculata): Variation Among Clonal Lineages and Infection. Matthew Donelon and David Huffman. Biology Department, Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas. The invasive thiarid snail Melanoides tuberculata serves as host for more trematodes than any other snail. Local populations in central Texas host two invasive heterophyid trematodes which are impacting several fish species of concern. The reported vulnerability of the snail to winter thermal minima of Texas rivers was earlier expected to restrict its distribution to thermally stable spring waters like Comal Springs in New Braunfels. However, in 2009, M. tuberculata was found thriving in the connecting Guadalupe River many km from spring influence, despite recorded temperatures in those reaches remaining well below the published lethal thermal minimum of the snail for weeks. The invasive populations of the parthenogenetic snail are not composed of a single traditional species, but of several genetically distinct clonal lineages which were likely collected from thermally different environments in the snail’s native range. Unfortunately, all previous researchers reporting on the thermal ecology of the snail ignored the clonal identities of experimental subjects. I searched the thermal biology literature hoping to find a device suitable for exploring the thermal preferenda of local clones of the snail. Unable to find a suitable device, I designed and constructed a water-filled thermal-gradient trough based on countercurrent heat-exchange theory and driven by a computer-controlled Peltier heat source at one end and a Peltier heat sink at the other end. The device is designed to produce a stable, linear thermal gradient ranging ±15 C from the 23 C waters of local springs. I will collect representative clones from Central Texas waters, and explore their thermal preferenda under varying conditions. I anticipate that the clones will differ in thermal preferenda, and that other factors (water quality, parasitized/uninfected, fasted/satiated, light/dark etc.) will alter some of the thermal responses. 2 9:30 am (G) 2. Mediterranean parasites in North America: Coccidia from introduced populations of the Mediterranean house gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus and other species of Hemidactylus. Hemidactylus turcicus, is native to the Mediterranean region of Africa, Asia, and Europe. However, it has been widely introduced across the world including the United States, were it was first reported in Florida in 1910 and have since colonized the southern United States. Beginning in the 1960s, the first records of H. turcicus from Oklahoma were due to intentional releases on university campuses, including Oklahoma State University, and currently H. turcicus is found in 55 of 77 counties in the state. Although a number of studies have documented parasites of H. turcicus throughout its introduced range, little information exists on the coccidian parasites of this gecko. We sampled geckos from the OSU campus and examined their fecal samples for coccidian oocysts. Twenty percent of geckos shed ellipsoid tetrasporocystid oocysts with a smooth bi-layered wall. Oocysts, contained a polar granule, but a micropyle and residuum were absent. Sporocysts were ellipsoid and without stiedal or substiedal bodies. Sporocysts contained a residuum composed of numerous granules in a spherical mass and 2 sporozoites. These oocysts were most similar to the description of Eimeria lineri (Acroeimeria lineri) previously reported from H. turcicus in the United States, Egypt, Israel and Turkey and from H. mabouia, from South Africa. Additionally, 20% of geckos shed ellipsoid polysporocystid oocysts with a smooth bi-layered wall. Numerous granules were present within oocysts, but a micropyle was absent. The number of sporocysts per oocyst ranged from 8 to 12. Sporocysts were subspherical and contained a residuum composed of scattered granules. These oocysts were most similar to species of Adelina which infect invertebrate hosts and should be considered pseudoparasites of geckos. This is the first report of Acroeimeria lineri from Oklahoma. However, a recent study on coccidia of H. turcicus from Egypt suggested that A. lineri may represent a complex of cryptic species. As a result, we are expanding our survey and examining Mediterranean house geckos and two other introduced species of Hemidactylus, from Florida for coccidian infections. To get a better understanding of the diversity of coccidian parasites in species of Hemidactylus, we will utilize DIC microscopy techniques for oocyst morphology, histological techniques for coccidian development in geckos, and molecular techniques for barcoding coccidians. 3 9:45 am (UG) 3. A survey of gregarine species parasitizing the differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis, in an urban environment in eastern Kansas, U.S.A. Jordan A. Xufuris and J. J. Cielocha. Department of Biology, Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A. Gregarines are a diverse group of protozoan parasites that parasitize marine, freshwater and terrestrial invertebrates. Gregarines of insects are especially diverse. The insect order Orthoptera includes grasshoppers, katydids, locusts and crickets. Several past studies have focused on gregarines of orthopterans, but few are from the Americas. The differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis, has been reported to host a gregarine in the genus Amoebogregarina in Illinois, Nebraska, and Ohio throughout the 1900s. Twenty-eight individuals of M. differentialis were collected by hand from a fence line along a public walking trail in Overland Park, Kansas, U.S.A. in the fall of 2019. Grasshoppers were stored in 1- gallon plastic containers with the host plant and dissected 24 to 48 hours after collection. Alimentary canals were removed, dissected, and observed for gregarine infection. Specimens were fixed, stained, and mounted on glass slides for observation under a compound microscope. Two gregarine species were found parasitizing M. differentialis in this study. One species is consistent with that previously described from this host, Amoebogregarina c.f. nigra. The second is presumably a new species of Quadruspinospora. It differs from the other known members of this genus by a number of morphological features such as total length and maximum width, but also in its developmental sequence. Here we report the differences and diversity of gregarines in the genus Quadruspinospora and discuss the taxonomic history and present status of this genus. Future work will focus on obtaining molecular sequence data to better determine the phylogenetic placement of these taxa among the Eugregarinorida. 4 10:00 am (UG) 4. Domestic cats (Felis catus) are beloved companions and important animals that many humans live close to or encounter every day. However, cats are also profoundly important carriers for many zoonotic diseases. One of the unicellular eukaryotic parasites which cause a deadly disease in human and are transmitted via cats is toxoplasmosis. The causative agent of this debilitating disease is the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Currently some 16% of the United States population is seropositive for toxoplasmosis while up to 2% of the mentally retarded children are reportedly born to mothers who were infected with Toxoplasma gondii during the pregnancy.

A total of 320 samples were collected from surface, interstitial and ground waters. Whenever possible, ostracod identification was performed at species level based on the morphology of both valves and limbs. Seventy-four taxa in 30 genera belonging to 9 different families (Darwinulidae, Candonidae, Ilyocyprididae, Notodromadidae, Cyprididae, Limnocytheridae, Cytheridae, Leptocytheridae and Xestoleberididae) were identified. The maximum number of taxa per site was seven. The most common species was Cypria ophthalmica (133 records), followed by Cyclocypris ovum (86 records), C. laevis (49 records), Cypridopsis vidua (40 records) and Notodromas persica (28 records). Of particular relevance is the occurrence of six species new to Italy: Microdarwinula zimmeri, Penthesilenula brasiliensis, Fabaeformiscandona wegelini, Pseudocandona semicognita, Candonopsis scourfieldi, and C. mediosetosa. Scanning electron microscopy images of valves are provided for most of the described taxa. Geographical distribution of ostracods and their occurrence in relation to environmental variables were examined.

Corrected 04-II-2010. Accepted 02-III-2010. Abstract: Ostracode taxonomy has been of great interest because of their possible use as indicator species in climate and ecosystem changes. In Central and South America, few studies have been carried out and this study includes a contribution to the group. Eleven ostracode species were collected in Lago Petén Itzá (~100km2), the second largest lowland lake in Guatemala, and from its inflow tributary, Río Ixlú in November 2005 and February 2008. Twenty-seven surface sediment samples were retrieved at water depths from the littoral zone to the lake’s maximum depth (>160m). Hard and soft parts of ostracodes were analyzed, and each ostracode spe- cies was described for taxonomy, size, ecology, biology and geographic distribution. Species recorded include: Candonocypris serratomarginata?, Cypretta brevisaepta?, Cypridopsis okeechobei, Cytheridella ilosvayi, Darwinula stevensoni, Heterocypris punctata, Limnocythere opesta, Physocypria globula, Pseudocandona sp., Stenocypris major and Strandesia intrepida. Most of the species have a neotropical distribution, two are distrib- uted world-wide (D. stevensoni and S. major), and C. okeechobei and P. globula display nearctic and neotropi- cal distributions.

Thirty-one species of Ostracoda in thirteen genera have been identified. Most species belong to typically freshwater genera: Candona, Cyclocypris, Physocypria, Cyprinotus, Eucy pris, Cypridopsis, Potamocy pris, Ilyocy pris, Pelocypris, Cytherissa, Litnnocythera, and Dartvinula. A total of 26 ostracod species were found in lakes (18 spp.) and streams (12 spp.). The Shannon index (H’) and evenness values of streams were higher than in lakes in all seasons. The highest H’ values for all combined (lakes + streams) and lake data were reported in the autumn season, and in spring the highest values were in streams. According to the β-diversity (β) index values, the variability of ostracod species composition in lakes was higher than in streams, and its value was highest in spring (0.40) and lowest in summer (0.34) among all seasons for combined data. Pairwise comparison of spring and autumn displayed higher β-diversity values than other comparisons, while its value was 0.41 between lakes and streams. According to canonical correspondence analysis results, elevation had a significant (P = 0.006) effect on distribution of species. All results suggested the importance of seasonality for evaluating the biodiversity of a region rather than the number of sampling sites, and the autumn season seems to be richer than other seasons in terms of species diversity.

Vernal pools, ponds, shallow lakes, fountains, springs, ditches, canals, and streams were among the most common types of aquatic systems included in this survey. Altogether, 90 sites located between 24 and 1557 m a.s.l. were visited, and 125 samples were collected. 41 samples did not contain ostracods, and 7 samples were not considered because only immature specimens or empty valves were found. Consequently, 77 samples from 58 sites were analysed. Whenever possible, ostracod identification was done at the species level based on the morphology of both valves and limbs. Thirty-eight taxa from 20 genera belonging to the families Candonidae, Ilyocyprididae, Cyprididae, and Notodromadidae were recorded. This roughly accounts for one-third of the estimated number of non-marine ostracod species in Italy. Scanning electron microscopy images of valves are provided. The maximum number of species per site was six. The most frequent species were Heterocypris incongruens, Eucypris virens, Pseudocandona pratensis, Cypria ophthalmica, and Tonnacypris lutaria.

China ABSTRACT Preliminary investigations of urban waters in Beijing City and small water-bodies in Inner Mongolia yielded a total of 12 living ostracod species. Five species are new records for China: Candona quasiakaina Karanovic & Lee, 2012, Fabaeformiscandona myllaina Smith & Kamiya, 2007, Heterocypris auricularis sp. nov. (previously known as Heterocypris sanukiensis Okubo, 2004 nomen nudum), Ilyocypris mongolica Martens, 1991 and Plesiocypridopsis newtoni (Brady & Robertson, 1870). Bradleycypris vittata (Sars, 1903), Ilyocypris angulata Sars, 1903, Limnocythere stationis Vávra, 1891 and Physocypria kraepelini G. W. Müller, 1903 are the first records for Palaearctic China. Cypridopsis vidua (O. F. Müller, 1776), Heterocypris incongruens (Ramdohr, 1808) and Limnocythere inopinata (Baird, 1843) are also reported in this paper, although they had already been found in China before. Of the above species, B. vittata, I. angulata and I. mongolica are re-described. The present study expands our knowledge on the taxonomy and geographical distribution of ostracod species.

Smith ii ABSTRACT The modern synthesis of paleontology with evolutionary biology has successfully integrated population ecology into the study of the fossil record. While it may prove impossible to measure and account for the important processes that structure communities through time, the integration of community ecology into paleoecology remains to be done to further the modern synthesis. This dissertation attempts to integrate community ecology into the study of a lacustrine ostracode metacommunity across space today and through the mid Holocene on San Salvador Island, Bahamas. Patterns of community change across space today are investigated by comparing the live/dead agreement in taxonomic composition and rank-abundance of species in seven lakes. This taphonomic study establishes that live/dead agreement of ostracode assemblages is high in all lakes save one. Therefore, sampling of death assemblages, as is common in many paleolimnolgical studies, can be used to investigate changes in alpha and beta diversity of assemblages across time and space.
