Also, coming that I do Whilst at GMS I have also enjoyed playing handball. This was in year 10 and 11. It was a game I found to be really good fun. from 4-0 down to beat MK Academy on penalties in the county cup. • Season Highlight: When I scored in the County The catching and throwing skills are similar to both cricket and rugby, so I was reasonably good to start, but wanted to get Tournament against St Georges, who have been much better. I trained every session and listened explicitly to all of the instructions and teaching points. After a lot of hard national champions work, I managed to become one of, if not the best player in the year, achieving the highest GCSE PE moderation grade. I am

• Name : Jimmy really proud of this, as it is a result of my resilience and determination and it definitely paid off.

• Year 10 Every summer I have played cricket and competed in athletics for the school. The cricket has been really enjoyable and

• Sports played at GMS: Rugby, Handball, Badminton despite the opinion, that some have, that cricket is boring, when you properly understand it, it is a technical and tactical game. I really enjoy this aspect of the game. The decision making with the setting up of the bowler and the fielders is like • Main Sport and position: Rugby - Flanker playing chess (although I haven’t played since primary). The school cricket team has been successful each year and we have • Favourite player and why?: Maro Itoji – England Rugby 2nd row, hugely resilient, been in many District League Finals. In athletics I have competed in nearly every discipline. However, my main events have very passionate and a beast in the tackle been javelin, 800m and 1500m. I didn’t start throwing the javelin until year 9, although I had thrown it in core PE lessons. I • Tries scored: 10 games, 6 tries, 4 MVPs liked the fact that it is very technical and when you get it right the javelin really flies. I have worked hard every year to improve • Skill strength: Tackling, running from depth, hitting the ruck and I have a PB of 34.50, this isn’t too bad for someone of my size. My best memory from a 1500m was in the English Schools • Life skill strength: Teamwork, team ethos is everything, no ‘I’ in team Competition last year, the pace was incredibly fast and I had to show real resilience and grit to hang on. I managed to stick • Season Highlight: Beating Chesham Grammar in the County with the main pack and still had a sprint finish in my legs, I overtook 3 runners in the final 100m and got a PB. Despite being Cup Semi Final exhausted, the feeling was amazing and I gained valuable points for the team.

I have loved GMS PE and the extra-curricular programme, it has undoubtedly been my favourite aspect of school, where I find myself getting away from the stresses of teenage life and get a sensation of being free without a care in the world…well, I still need to perform, or I might get dropped. SPORTS QUIZ ANSWERS Next year I really want to study a key stage 5 PE course – I would like to end by saying thank you to the department for all they have done for me in the past 5 years .”

Grace epitomises everything we want our GMS PE students to be. She is hardworking, resilient and has demonstrated outstanding commitment to all of the sports she has participated in. Moreover, Grace brings positivity, humour and fun to all that she does, having a profound impact on her team mates, which has undoubtedly enabled her to be an outstanding hockey captain for 4 out of her 5 years at GMS.

“My first memory of GMS PE is my first hockey session in Year 7. We went down to the astro with miss Haynes and learnt how to slap the ball. I was partnered with Emily and from that moment I just loved it! I thought the sport was so much fun, to I joined the Year 7 team. GMS hockey allowed me to meet new people, who I didn’t know before coming to GMS – Emily being one of them. I made lots of new friends, who I’m still friends with now! I started to enjoy school hockey so much that I also joined Marlow Hockey Club when I was in year 8. I wanted to further my hockey development and just play more! My main aim has always been to play for enjoyment and be the best I can be. Recently I’ve started to get more ambitious, I got into England Hockey Performance Centres last year and now train in the Ladies’ Performance Squad at Marlow HC.

Our school hockey team have been very successful. We have represented the school at regional level competitions every single year, since year 7. We were also the first GMS team to do this, which we’re very proud of! My best moment in a GMS PE shirt has to be winning our Indoor Hockey Regional Pool this year. I absolutely loved that! We beat Wellington College on their home pitch to qualify for the regional final! Beating SWB in the previous round to get to the regional stage was also great!

The experience of going to the Regional Finals at St George’s and winning our pool there too, was amazing. We were the underdogs, but it made me believe that you can achieve anything, if you work for it. Losing to Cranleigh in the semi-final, was probably my worst moment. Our emotions were everywhere. We were ecstatic for Zoe’s equaliser, but for it to be disallowed, was heart-breaking. We were so close! Finding out that Cranleigh went on to win the whole national competition made it worse – we knew that could have been us.

I have enjoyed the responsibility of being captain and having an important role in the team. I hope my team mates would say that I am positive, kind and encouraging. We had to write down some positive facts about each other, before our Regioanl Indoor Finals, my comments were “motivating captain”, “thinks calmly under pressure” and “funny”. I still keep the messages in the back of my phone case.

Joining the GMS hockey team also influenced me to join other sports teams and keep active. Besides hockey, throughout my time at school I have played football, badminton, athletics, rounders. I enjoyed all of these, but I particularly liked training twice a week for athletics because it helped with my fitness. Every sport I have played has been fun, which really influenced me to develop a passion for sport and impacted the choices I made for GCSE and now A Level. I want to come back for 6th form at GMS. I feel quite positive about the exams being cancelled because I feel that I’ve worked hard for two years to earn the grades I get. I want to study PE, Law and Business, with a view to going to university after school. I’m excited about the prospect of uni hockey!

Anthony Joshua is one of my role models because of his mentality. He’s strong minded and respectful to his opponents, which I think is really important. My other massive inspiration is Kate, my Marlow HC coach. She has helped me to develop so much and is always very supportive. She does so much for us and I’ve improved so much since joining Marlow, she’s a great coach.

I’ve been trying to stay active since the lockdown started. I do hockey stick skill practice in the garden – I have a small square of astro, which is great! It’s great to practice skills you don’t normally get to do at training. I’ve also been running a lot. I mainly do 5k runs but a few days ago I ran 9k with my Mum. To be honest, I didn’t know it was going to be that long when we started! I don’t have any specific goals, but I always want to beat my times on strava. Unfortunately I live on a hill, so always have to deal with 118m elevation gain! When lockdown is over, I can’t wait to see my friends and play hockey again. I also can’t wait to start watching sport again – live and on TV!”

PE Health & Safety STAYING SAFE WHILST YOU ARE AT HOME

This is a message GMS have received from an organisation called Learn to Live - about rail safty in secondary schools which we would like to share with our readers.

Trespass remains a real concern for the railway. Despite the current stay at home advice from the Government, we are still seeing incidents where youths and, in some instances, adults, taking unnecessary risks on the tracks. Taking a short cut across a track, playing ‘chicken’ in front of a train resulting in near misses is unacceptable behaviour.

Join us on the Learn Live Channel on Wednesday 13th May @ 10:30am for a series of railway safety and important learning opportunities!

To coincide with the You Vs Train, national rail industry campaign, Wales and Western Route Community Safety Managers at Network Rail have worked closely with our partners, the British Transport Police, Train Operating Companies and railway colleagues to bring to you a series of videos containing key safety messages and home school learning/activities. These messages are important. Each year there is unnecessary loss of life and serious injuries to those who simply made the wrong decision to put themselves and others at risk by trespassing or taking part in an unsafe act on the railway.

There is something in these messages for you all, young and old! You will certainly learn something today from this and it will be great if you can pass on the key points you have learned to your friends and families. AND FINALLY.... The broadcast is free for all schools to watch.
