Anderson St. Los Angeles, CA 90033 Open Tuesday-Saturday, 12pm - 6pm (310) 287-2340 On Saturday, November 14th, downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery will proudly present their seventh annual Art Collector Starter Kit group show, featuring new 12” X 12” works from artists spanning across the globe, displayed throughout the Main Gallery. To premiere the show, CHG will be hosting a virtual opening (details TBA). Smaller, more affordable new works by artists that everyone loves was the inciting idea behind CHG’s popular annual show when it launched in 2013. Since then, the eXhibition has been met with huge crowds and enthusiasm. The show is back for its seventh installment, ACSK VII, and is bigger than ever, featuring the top artists in the New Contemporary art scene. About Corey Helford Gallery: Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) was first established in 2006 by Jan Corey Helford and her husband, television producer and creator, Bruce Helford (The Conners, Anger Management, The Drew Carey Show, George Lopez) and has since evolved into one of the premier galleries of New Contemporary art. Its goals as an institution are the support and growth of young and emerging, to well-known and internationally established artists. CHG represents a diverse collection of international artists, primarily influenced by today's pop culture and collectively encompassing style genres such as New Figurative Art, Pop Surrealism, Neo Pop, Graffiti and Street Art. Home > Vol 21, No 5 (2018) > Ford Rebooting Roseanne: Feminist Voice across Decades Jessica Ford In recent years, the US television landscape has been flooded with reboots, remakes, and revivals of “classic” nineties television series, such as Full/er House (1987-1995, 2016- present), Will & Grace (1998-2006, 2017-present), Roseanne (1988-1977, 2018), and Charmed (1998-2006, 2018-present). The term “reboot” is often used as a catchall for different kinds of revivals and remakes. “Remakes” are derivations or reimaginings of known properties with new characters, cast, and stories (Loock; Lavigne). “Revivals” bring back an existing property in the form of a continuation with the same cast and/or setting. “Revivals” and “remakes” both seek to capitalise on nostalgia for a specific notion of the past and access the (presumed) existing audience of the earlier series (Mittell; Rebecca Williams; Johnson). Reboots operate around two key pleasures. First, there is the pleasure of revisiting and/or reimagining characters that are “known” to audiences. Whether continuations or remakes, reboots are invested in the audience’s desire to see familiar characters. Second, there is the desire to “fix” and/or recuperate an earlier series. Some reboots, such as the Charmed remake attempt to recuperate the whiteness of the original series, whereas others such as Gilmore Girls: A Life in the Year (2017) set out to fix the ending of the original series by giving audiences a new “official” conclusion. The Roseanne reboot is invested in both these pleasures. It reunites the original cast for a short-lived, but impactful nine-episode tenth season.

COREY HELFORD GALLERY presents HUSH “Allure” Opening Reception Saturday, May 28 from 7-11pm (On View May 28 – July 2, 2016) “Allure” acrylic paint, screen print, spray paint on linen, 55” x 55” Los Angeles (May 6, 2016) — On Saturday, May 28th, Corey Helford Gallery proudly presents new works by internationally known street artist HUSH. His highly anticipated exhibition, entitled “Allure,” will be his second solo with the gallery. HUSH, inspired by detritus, uses futuristic silvers and blacks clothed in a chaotic collage of colour to create a sensual blizzard of femininity, power and loss. Painted in grayscale, often with the eyes blacked out, HUSH's female faces are dehumanized. By reducing them to shells of sexuality, he perfectly encapsulates the transient nature of modern life as well as the timeless forces of passion and desire. In what appears to be a luxurious and opulent tale, the hidden truth may reveal otherwise. HUSH lets us in, “Classical Sirens and Japanese Geishas, be prepared to be seduced and discarded like a piece of old flypaper.” By action painting these faces from history, he achieves "pure expressionism". The collage-effect backgrounds are screen-printed and hand-painted, then the graffiti elements added by hand in the action painting style, sometimes over many months. The final layer of colour replicates sheets of flyposters peeling from our city's walls whilst the Bravura use of aerosol on the portraits lends the pieces a futuristic sheen, echoing the seductive promise of technological fulfillment. A pioneer of street art and pop surrealism, English has created his most ambitiously conceptual exhibition to date. POPAGANDASTAN is a series of lavishly painted canvases depicting the expansive universe that lies just beneath the surface of our consciousness, somewhere down an inter-dimensional rabbit-hole. Like an Acid-Pop Aesop’s Fable, these paintings serve as a conceptual battleground for a multitude of view- points in harmonic opposition, creating the ultimate Pop Utopia. English has populated his visionary village with his original characters, each the embodiment of a distinct aspect of the human condition. The central character is Ronnnie Rabbbit, a three-eyed neurotic rabbit whose two brains argue each side to every argument. The Combrats are a feral group of doe eyed, runaway, militaristic, dinosaur riding clowns who enforce community law. Corey Helford Gallery presents Kazuki Takamatsu “Japanese Ideology of Puberty” Opening Reception Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 7-10pm On View April 13 – May 11, 2013 Culver City (April 4, 2013) — On Saturday, April 13, 2013, Corey Helford Gallery presents the “Japanese Ideology of Puberty,” featuring the light and shadow paintings of Japanese artist Kazuki Takamatsu, his first solo show with the gallery. Takamatsu’s paintings of contemporary awakenings are a catharsis of tonalities. “I use computer graphics- digital-and painting-analog-to make a work and it indicates the emotion of boys and girls metaphorically,” says Takamatsu of his painting method. Through the computer graphic technique of depth mapping, three- dimensional space is digitally visualized in a series of multiple depth plains. Takamatsu hand paints the emotions of his teenage subjects modeled on deep computer visual space. “Each graduation from surface to depth means the distance and there is no light and shadow. The color of black and white are metaphor for truth and evil, race and religion.” With acrylic black and white paints and gouaches, Takamatsu renders his girls with a method mediated on social fields of sexual identity, depth-fields mapping emotions engaging with a “systematic society.” In the featured painting, “What is Important to Me Now?,” Takamatsu reveals a girl’s contemplation as a defense of being overwhelmed: “Weapons to protect something or to get rid of something. Information, life, politics, culture, religion, friends, nature, animal, plant or mind?” Youth becomes a field of awakenings, multiple perceptions of an adulterated world. “A pure emotion of Teenager who can’t get used to the society of adult has a mirror of inconsistency of society.
