Fine throughout, a very attractive copy. VG $275.00

Hanff, Greene, page 63ff., considers the tan cloth to a be the secondary binding of the Reilly & Britton first edition, and describes early Reilly & Lee printings as being in this binding, and as being otherwise nearly identical to the secondary issues of the first edition. The fact that this copy has advertisements on the half-title though Magic of OZ, implies the 1919-1920 date, making it the earliest reprint. "Magic of Oz" 1919, was the first Oz book published under the Reilly and Lee imprint, and "Glinda of OZ" was the next, in 1920. The fact that Magic is the last in the list of advertized books, dates it as being issued prior to the publication of Glinda. The binding, however, tan, colored in red and black, varies from the secondary first edition binding which was tan, colored in red, green and yellow. Nevertheless, I base the dating on the publisher's usual practice of adding the newly published books to the list of advertisements on the half-title. Patchwork Girl, unlike most of the Oz books had no inserted color plates in any of the editions.

315. (Sterrett, Virginia Frances)illus. TANGLEWOOD TALES by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Penn Publishing Co., Philadelphia, 1921. A variant, possibly later printing. 4to., cloth, 261pp., 8 color plates, including frontispiece, and 14 in-text illustrations in b/w. This copy varies from the one usually seen in the following respects: 1. There is no pictorial paste-on on this copy, and there clearly seems not to have been one, or the intention to have one, as this copy does not have the embossed gold square which frames the paste-on the other issue (and on the companion volume "Old French Fairy Tales"). 2. The cloth is different. The usually seen issue has cloth with narrow parallel vertical lines; this cloth has both horizontal and vertical lines. 3. Both have a copyright date of 1921, with no publication date stated. 4. The usually seen issue has the Penn Publishing logo in a horizontal oval format at the bottom of the spine; on this copy the format of the oval is vertical. On this copy the logo is less elaborate and more modern in appearance, rather Art Deco versus the other, which is more Art Nouveau. 5. The usually seen issue has a Greek Key pattern surrounding the copyright notice; this copy has a pattern of "curlicues." 6. Unless I have missed something, the books are otherwise identical. I have obtained and laid in a copy of the paste-on to accompany this copy, in the event I am wrong about it not being called for with this issue. Owner's name on front pastedown, else Fine. $250.00

The multiple rests on a plastic padding, designed to resemble the river, and is covered with a sheet of clear plastc adorned with materials designed to resemble river detritus. The actual project which inspired this multiple was not carried out. Prospectus and Artist's Statement laid in. Exceptionally Fine throughout. $2000.00

Artist's Statement: THE SOAP AT BATON ROUGE When Carl Solway called me in May 1972 and asked if I would be interested in proposing a large-scale work for Cincinnati, he mentioned that partial funding for such a work might be sought from the Proctor & Gamble Corporation, whose world headquarters are in that city. The most familiar product of that company is the bar of pure white soap we all grew up with - IVORY - embossed with its name on top. Its slogan - "it floats- advertises one of its unique properties, a property it has in common with balloons and ships. What sprang to mind almost immediately, given the location of Cincinnati on the Ohio River, was the combination of a floating soap bar and an old-fashioned, paddle-wheel riverboat - in other words, a colossal bar of Ivory soap.

I proposed to Carl that a colossal soap be made by Proctor & Gamble and launched in Cincinnati with appropriate ceremony. It would thereafter float down the Ohio River, stopping at towns along the way. Carl thought the event could be coordinated with celebrations of the Bicentennial in 1976. Another property of Ivory soap, however, had to be taken into account: its tendency to dissolve, which it does rather more quickly than other soaps. As the colossal soap moved from town to town, it would grow smaller, like the icebergs which, I read soemwhere, were going to be towed from the arctic to Arabia in order to provide fresh water.

At Cairo, Illinois, the now somewhat-less-than colossal soap would slip into the Mississippi. From there on, it would become more and more difficult to gather people to celebrate the visit of the soap. By the time the soap reached Baton Rouge, it would be the right size for a multiple. Thouhg it seems small, one must remember that in the not-so-distant past, it would have made a very imposing sight, especially coming around the bend in the morning fog.
