Ralph Steu)art A Gust of the North Wind: |ames Kirkton's History of the Covenanters After the restoration of Charles II in 1660, the Presbyterian Church of Scofland was replaced with an Episcopalian one. Many ministers refused to accept the new regime, and were consequently expelled from their parishes and forbidden to preach. They and their supporters were known as Covenanters because they adhered to the principles of the Scottish "National Covenant" of 1638, according to which the church was largely independent of the state. The ministers who did continue preaching, in churches, houses, or out-of-doors "conventicles," faced increasingly heavy penalties. In 1670 the offence became capital, and after L675 the more notorious ministers were "intercommuned"-anyone associating with them faced the same penalties as the ministers; after 1678 any landowner on whose estate a conventicle had taken place, or a fugitive assisted, could be treated similarly. -

John Cameron and the Development of Early Reformed Orthodoxy John Cameron and Early Reformed Orthodoxy IT IS GENERALLY agreed that John Cameron (ca. 1579-1625) occupies a significant position in the early development of Reformed covenant theology. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Enlighten SHR Notes and Comments A 1706 Manifesto for an Armed Rising against Incorporating Union Abstract This paper presents a draft manifesto by Robert Wylie, minister of Hamilton parish, for a popular Presbyterian rising designed to halt the ratification of incorporating union by the Scottish parliament in its 1706-07 session. The document has been preserved in Robert Wodrow’s extensive collection of papers held by the National Library of Scotland. Speaking in the name of the ‘free people’ of Scotland, the manifesto demands new elections to produce a parliament more representative of national opinion on incorporation. The new parliament would proceed to confirm the Hanoverian succession with limitations on monarchical powers. The document illustrates common arguments against incorporating union held by some Presbyterians in 1706-07 and indicates the importance of the settlement of the Hanoverian succession with limitations as an alternative to incorporating union. The document demonstrates the political activism of clergy like Wylie, acting in cooperation with opposition leaders in parliament. Recent studies have shown how religious concerns led Scottish Presbyterians to divide over the question of incorporation during the parliamentary session of 1706-07. Though incorporating union offered a means of confirming Sophia, electress of Hanover as Scotland’s successor to Queen Anne and thus sustaining the Protestant Revolution interest against the threat of a Jacobite restoration, some felt that the covenants of 1638 and 1643 demanded the preservation of the Scottish realm and parliament and made an entire union with Anglican England impossible.1 There was ferocious debate in the Commission of the General Assembly on how far the institutional church 1 Presbyterian attitudes towards incorporating union have been discussed in specialised and general studies including Colin Kidd, ‘Religious Realignment Between the Revolution and the Union’ in J. -

MOORE, JOSEPH S., Ph.D. Irish Radicals, Southern Conservatives: Slavery, Religious Liberty and the Presbyterian Fringe in the Atlantic World, 1637-1877. (2011) Directed by Robert M. Calhoon. pp. 488 This dissertation is a study of Covenanter and Seceder Presbyterians in Scotland, Ireland and the American South from 1637-1877. Correspondence, diaries, political pamphlets, religious tracts, and church disciplinary records are used to understand the cultural sensibility, called herein the Covenanter sensibility, of the Covenanter movement. The dissertation examines how the sensibility was maintained and transformed by experiences such as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the Glorious Revolution, the 1798 Irish Rebellion, the American Civil War, and Reconstruction. Critical issues involved are the nature of religious and political culture, the role of moderation and religious extremism, the nature of Protestant primitivsm and church discipline, and the political nature of radical Protestant religion. This dissertation looks at Covenanter movements broadly and eschews an organiZational history in favor of examining political and religious culture. It labels the broad groups within the Covenanter movement the Presbyterian fringe. In Scotland, the study examines Covenanter ideology, society, church discipline, cell group networks of praying societies, issues of legal toleration and religious liberty, the birth of the Seceder movement and anti-slavery rhetoric. In Ireland it examines the contested legal role of Presbyterian marriages, the controversial arrival of Seceders in Ireland, as well as Covenanters’ involvement in the Volunteer movement, the United Irishmen, and the 1798 Irish Rebellion. In America it studies the life of John Hemphill, the retention of exclusive psalm singing and primitive Protestantism, the American ColoniZation society in South Carolina, interracial religious transfers, and Reconstruction. -

It’s designed by smooth methods to keep him quiet. —Robert Wodrow, Analecta On 17 October 1727, John Glas waited anxiously, steeling himself as he prepared to stand before the Synod of Angus and Mearns to answer the charges of heterodoxy levied against him. The thirty-two-year-old minister of the Church of Scotland1 had grown increasingly impatient with the weight of Presbyterian authority, particularly the synods, which exercised powers he thought bore marks of worldliness and clerical despotism. Individual churches, he averred, had gradually lost the ability to govern their own affairs, being forced to submit proposals even on minor decisions to local presbyteries for approval on matters having little or nothing to do with church doctrine. He criticized the Presbyterian establishment from his pulpit, and published critical polemics charging its leaders with corruption. He defiantly rebuffed a preliminary exami- nation, and the matter shifted to the Presbytery of Dundee, which demanded that he renounce his opinions and reaffirm his Confession of Faith and the Formula. He stood his ground, and the presbytery suspended him from preaching until the matter could be decided by the Synod of Dundee, which stripped Glas of his license to preach; this penalty was ratified in 1730 by a Commission of the General Assembly sitting in Edinburgh.
