Considerable weight savings can be realized by appropriate allocation of materials while actually improving toughness, stiffness, and control.

Large Wrapped Graphite An old friend once told me “Steve, they’re not called sticks - sticks grow on trees!” Well Bill was especially right about these spars - they are definetly not sticks. For your really BIG kite projects these are what you might need. Very stiff. Very expensive. Think about making two or three kites with interchangable frameworks. Do you really fly more than one monster kite at a time? NOTE: Due to UPS restrictions, an extra $3.00 will be charged to all boxes exceeding 60” in length. Hairpipe Tensioners Once again, created by I don’t know who first, Bobby Stanfield or Ron Gibian, these are rather simple tensioners that are a pain to thread but once installed work better for tensioning a 100# dacron bow line than anything else I’ve seen. If you can find the one inch plastic beads and have a drill press, it’s relatively easy to make them. You just drill one cross hole all the way through and the second cross hole halfway through, chamfer the holes and your done; OR you can let me do it for you. Ream holes when using 150# Dacron line. When using 50# line, use our new 3/4” micro bead.

Bobby’s Adjustable Fittings

These fantastic new fittings were invented by Bobby Stanfield. The “Old Man” is producing his version of them with Bobby’s permission. They are the neatest things since zippers, for all kinds of cellular and flat/dihedral kites. The fittings work on all sizes of linear graphite sticks. The first fitting is a “one stick hole to fabric.” No little loop to sew on, and no split ring to break your finger nail on when installing them at the end of the sail. Just re-enforce the point of the sail with extra Dacron, then hot drill a small 1/8” hole and insert the nylon washer and screw into the fitting. This affixes the fitting to the sail, and it stays there even after disassembly, slide in the stick and use the second nylon screw below the stick to tighten the sail. The second fitting is a “two stick hole” fitting. This is used where two sticks cross. One stick is attached to the fitting with a set screw using a hex wrench, this fitting stays on the stick during disassembly; and the other stick attaches to the fitting with a nylon adjust screw so it is easy to assemble and fine tune adjust. Refer to the following matrix for all the sizes that are available.

Screw Style Reverse Adjustable Fittings For bigger sticks we offer a “Reverse Adjust” fitting. These go on the spar the same as forward adjust except that they tension the sail by turning the nylon screw counter clockwise (the screw is actually inside the stick). Originally offered with one split ring and gets fixed with “lock-tite” to hold it to the screw, but now improved by Dale Vanderhoof, of California, to include two split rings. Dale says to put one inside the other to provide better adjusting clearance making the fitting infinitely better, must be so, cause he orders these by the dozens. He likes them with a center Tinkertoy and six Pro Spar 19L sticks to make his nine foot diameter “Rasta Flowers.” Refer to the following matrix for sizes currently available. Kite Building Video: Kite Workshop #1 To quote Bob McGilvray — former Sales Representative from Bainbridge/ Aquabatten (a major supplier of sailcloth and hardware): “When doing anything as labor intensive as kitemaking, any reduction in the learning curve is beneficial. Steve Ferrel has done a great service to the novice builder with this video.”

The video was designed as an introduction to the sewing of kite ripstop and banner nylon. We cover types of fabric, the properties of the cloth, the preparation of the fabric, the cutting of the fabric, and the demonstration of basic hems, seams, pockets, and edge treatments. Extreme close ups at the sewing machine help demonstrate different techniques. VHS format. Approximate running time: 60 minutes. VID50 $23.00.
