A book for those whose minds are aching to be blown openBy Jean HoustonHow do you review a book that says it all? A book whose wisdom goes to the core of life’s lostness and gathering foundness? A book whose light illumines a single moment and banishes the darkness that invades the soul? Winter Moon is not for everyone, perhaps because it is ultimately for everyone, a work of consummate Zen mind, the trickster behind your back, whose singular style re-sets the mind’s hard drive. Whether dealing with the pottery and poetry of Rengetsu, a 19th century Japanese wise woman whose life experience encompassed everything, or in taking a lapidary look at the nature and practice of enlightenment, this is a book by a Zen master and former Abbess, a midwife of souls who stops time while encompassing the no-thingness of all space. Long renowned for her clarity, compassion and genius in waking people up. Sensei Bonnie Myotai Treace, offers the startling first book of a four season series, turning the winter of our discontent into a sap rising potency of being truly alive. As she writes, “A practitioner of Zen is most basically one whose life is awakening to each moment to that threshold, the still point where all the possibilities exist.”0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Don't Say IntimateBy Eve MarkoThis stands out in modern Zen literature for its deep thoughtfulness, gorgeous writing, and a deep focus coupled with a wide, wide scope. I sometimes think that if I hear the word "intimate" one more time I'll scream. It's not meant to be said or written. But Myotai points to it, hums it, paints it, is it. That's not easy, but when done, it's a lot more real, more poetic, more Zen, more true. I loved the chapter called "Threshold" the most, but they're all worth lots of time to read, reread, and re-re-read. This is a good winter for it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful and powerfulBy danny hThis well-written book is as approachable for the Zen beginner as it is for the more advanced practitioner. Bonnie Myotai Treace uses koans and poetic stories from the colorful history of Zen to bring real teachings in a poignant way. I like that she focuses on some of the women who have contributed to the Zen library. As a practitioner for many years, I found her voice refreshing and authentic. My sangha is loosely affiliated with Treace's longtime former monastery but I've never had the pleasure of hearing her teach in person. After reading this, I find myself wanting to hear more from her. A collection of dharma talks by Zen teacher Bonnie Myotai Treace, Sensei touching on topics from koans to poetry, ancient Buddhist masters to contemporary issues. Challenging yet accessible, will be of interest to those new to Zen as well as seasoned practitioners. About the AuthorBonnie Myotai Treace, Sensei is the founder of Hermitage Heart Zen. A lineage holder in the White Plum Asanga, she was the first dharma successor in the Mountains and Rivers Order. She has published widely in Buddhist periodicals and books, most recently Hidden Lamp: Stories from 25 Centuries of Awakened Women (Wisdom Publications).
