TINENT ON AL C O D W N N A E Lincoln and R Lincoln and N L S C O C FOUNDED L CONFAB U N 1955 CONFAB I B L Continental WESTERN REGION Western Region Lincoln and Continental Owners Club Publication Volume 42 No 7, September, 2013 Presidential 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan “Bubbletop” Limousine, the orange Boano Lincoln Indianapolis Coupe which was a 1955 show car, and a specially painted 2013 Lincoln MKZ. Other Lincolns on display were William Clay Ford’s 1956 Continental Mark II convertible, several classic Lincolns from the twenties and thirties, and a 1956 Continental Mark II originally owned by Elizabeth Taylor. Originally the Western Region planned to have a special class as they did in 1995 but that plan was cancelled due to lack of participation. We are not sure how many, if any, Western Region members attended without cars. One Western Region mem- ber, Jim Ayres, did attend and took these photos. More of his photos appear on Lincoln Honored at Pebble Beach 2013 page 4. For the first time since its 75th Anniversary in 1995 Lincoln was one of the honored marques at the 63rd edition Left, of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance “Bubbltop,” the third weekend of August. Below, This year the concours, held Sunday, Anne August 18, honored Lincoln, Simplex, Ford Vanvooren Coachwork, Aston Martin Mark II. Centennial, Lamborghini, Porsche 911, BMW 507, Indianapolis Roadsters and French Motorcycles. The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance saw more than 200 historic cars parade on a 88-mile course along the 17-Mile Drive, winding through the Central Coast includ- to a 1934 Packard ing, for the first time in a decade, the 1108 Twelve Dietrich Corkscrew turn around the track at Mazda Convertible Victoria Raceway Laguna Seca. -

Remember me, Joe S. Board of Managers 2019 Columbe? You have not heard much from me this year but nothing much has been going on either. We canceled most Director events due to this year’s turmoil. The February dinner meeting Joe S. Columbe had a fair number in attendance at Bynum’s Steakhouse. The summer picnic was a great success. With the five car clubs that were invited, we had 23 Hoosier Region members in attendance, Treasurer with a total of 73 enjoying the event. The “bring your own pic- Paul Temple nic” or order a box lunch was accepted by all. We had 45 or- ders for box lunches and many told us that they were thoroughly Secretary enjoyed. Darren Klingler Our next event will be on Saturday, October 3, in Seymour with lunch provided by our host and member John Rust. There will be theatre organ concerts along with a car show. This is a Bill Baird first-time event for our club. Charlie Griffith A 1967 Continental Convertible was sold in August at the Raleigh Classic Auction. This red with white top and interior John Madden drop-top sold for $118,000.00 plus bidder’s fee and sales tax if applicable. -

Earl “Madman” Muntz Biography Earl “Madman” Muntz - Class of 1932 (did not actually graduate), - b. January 3, 1914 d. June 21, 1987 Earl “Madman” Muntz! The very name conjures up memories, for many, of one of the wildest and craziest entrepreneurs of the 20th century. First of the loud, nuts, in-your-face used car salesmen, in the 1940s his billboards blanketed Southern California screaming, “I wanna give ‘em away, but Mrs. Muntz won’t let me - SHE’S CRAZY!” and “I buy ‘em retail, sell ‘em wholesale - IT'S MORE FUN THAT WAY!” These billboards, plus a steady bombardment of radio ads, helped Muntz sell $76 million worth of automobiles in 1947, when a million dollars was real money. And his logo -- a caricature of Muntz wearing a black Napoleon hat and red BVDs -- seemed to be everywhere. He produced and sold Muntz TVs, cheap but functional sets that competed successfully in the marketplace with RCA, Philco and other electronic giants of the time. And his TV business made him a second multimillion dollar fortune. He produced the first American sports car -- the Muntz Jet. A beautiful, well-crafted, speedy car that was a precursor of Chevrolet's Corvette, the Muntz Jet was an aesthetic and mechanical success, but Muntz’s first financial disappointment. The Jets sold for $5,500 but they cost $6,500 to produce, and this at a time (the early 1950s) when a new Cadillac could be had for $3,200. Earl Muntz’s third fortune came in the 1960s when he invented the four-track car stereo, becoming the first major player in the soon-to-be-huge car stereo market. -

ON THE COVER Henry Kaiser, Troy Ruttman, and Madman Muntz Three Originals ROBERT C. POST Two of the men mentioned above appear in the photograph on the cover of this issue. Henry J. Kaiser does not, just his namesake automobile manu- factured at his plant near Ypsilanti, Michigan. Of the three, however, only Kaiser’s has remained a name to be reckoned with in American history: the entrepreneur behind Hoover, Bonneville, and Grand Coulee dams; builder of a third of the entire World War II U.S. merchant fleet, as well as the world’s largest cement plant at Permanente, California, and a steel mill in Fontana that employed as many as 11,000 workers; founder of the Kaiser Medical Care Program in Oakland, which became the template for the HMOs so much in current news; developer of Hawaii Kai, another tem- plate, in this case for the luxury resort hotel complex; chief of an industrial firm that made hundreds of different products, from airplanes to dish- washers. In 2004, the Oakland Museum of California staged an exhibition about Kaiser’s “impact on the modern economic and cultural landscape” called Henry J. Kaiser: Think Big. Not everything Kaiser created survives today—only a couple of those merchant ships, and the steel mill replaced by California Speedway, a land reuse entailing minimal toxic-waste clean- up. But he certainly left monuments. By comparison, Earl Muntz’s fame was fleeting—and yet his name did become a punch line for Jack Benny and Bob Hope, he is enshrined in the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Hall of Fame, and a sports car called the Muntz Jet is a rare treasure among collectors. -

SEE FORD BLUE IN KALAMAZOO With Lincolns, Mercurys and Edsels Too! By Mike Denney The Road Race Lincoln Register hosted 2019’s Lincoln Homecoming, August 7th through the 12th, 2019. The decision was made early on in the planning that we wanted to change it up this year by inviting all Ford products to the show. We welcomed 125 members and their families from all four Lincoln clubs plus Ford, Edsel and Mercury for this first time event featuring all Ford-built automobiles. All in all, the event was a success, however we were a little disappointed in the turn out of non Lincoln cars. The non- Lincolns that did show were high quality and pretty diverse. While many of us arrived on Monday to help set up registration and get organized for the weeks activities, Wednesday was when our first event took place. Some of our group drove out to the Gilmore Museum for their weekly cruise night. There was a large turnout of local cars of all types and ages, the evening was perfect! Those that choose to stay at the hotel got to enjoy a welcoming party with free appetizers and a cash bar. 1 Some of our Lincolns in front of the Kellogg Mansion Thursday there were two tours planned, one was to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary and Kellogg Manor, where attendees were treated to a fantastic lunch at the mansion. The other tour was to Vicksburg Historical Village, where people could tour the village at their own pace. After the tours we were back at the Four Points Hotel for an Italian buffet. -
