Oates is a CABS Research Fellow, Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY), and a Senior Conservation Advisor to the Africa program of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). He is cur- rently advising WCS on biodiversity conservation projects in eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon. Dr. Oates has conducted research on the ecology of forest primates in Africa and Asia since 1966, and has assisted with the development of rainforest protected areas in South India and West Africa. He has published extensively on primate biology and conservation and, as an active member of the IUCN-SSC Primate Specialist Group, has compiled conservation action plans for African primates. He holds a PhD from the University of London. Richard A. Bergl is a doctoral student in anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center, in the graduate training program of the New York Consortium in Evolutionary Primatology (NYCEP). He is currently conducting research into the population and habitat viability of the Cross River gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli) in Nigeria and Cameroon. -

An Central Africa important hotspot of amphibian diversification is the Guineo-Congolian rainforest in Central Africa, its richness Amphibia attributable to present day and ancestral range fragmentation through geological barriers, habitat expansion and Diversity hotspot contraction, and the presence of steep ecological gradients. The charismatic Nectophryne tree toads present an Phylogeography interesting case study for diversificationin this region. The two formally described species comprising this genus Lower Guinea forests Guineo-Congolian forest show nearly identical geographic distributions extending across most of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest, but Sympatry show little morphological disparity. Both species harbour extensive genetic diversity warranting taxonomic re Character displacement visions, and interestingly, when comparing the subclades within each, the two species show remarkably parallel diversification histories, both in terms of timing of phylogenetic splits and their geographic distributions. This indicates that common processes may have shaped the evolutionary history of these lineages. -

Kupe, a mountain at the southern edge of the Cameroonian Highlands. This work resulted in the sampling of 48 species, including 38 amphibian and 10 reptile species. By combining our data with prior survey results from higher elevation zones, we produce a checklist of 108 species for the greater Mt. Kupe region including 72 frog species, 21 lizard species, and 15 species of snakes. Our work adds 30 species of frogs at lower elevations, many of which are associated with breeding in pools or ponds that are absent from the slopes of Mt. Kupe. We provide taxonomic accounts, including museum specimen data and associated molecular data, for all species encountered. -

Mount Oku, Cameroon is one such mountain, which holds many endemic and restricted-range species. The history of amphibian research on Mt Oku, current knowledge on biogeography and conservation biology is reviewed, includ- ing recent findings. This updated inventory adds 25 further species, with 50 species of amphibian so far recorded to the Oku Massif (c. 900 to 3,011 m). This includes 5 endemic to Mt Oku, 7 endemic to the Bamenda Highlands, 18 restricted to the highlands of Cameroon and Nigeria, and 20 with broader ranges across Africa. -

Near Threatened Amphibian Species 610 Threatened Amphibians of the World ANURA to adapt to modifi ed habitats. The major threat is forest loss and fragmentation, due to the conversion of forests ARTHROLEPTIDAE to rubber and oil palm plantations, as well as the resulting eutrophication of streams by chemical fertilisers and stream siltation (thereby depriving larvae of feeding sites). It is present in several protected areas, and the continued protection of large areas of hilly rainforests is essential. Arthroleptis pyrrhoscelis Laurent, 1952 Bibliography: Das, I. (1997) Data Providers: Robert Inger, Indraneil Das, Robert Stuebing, Maklarin Lakim, Paul Yambun This species occurs in the Itombwe and Kabobo Highlands in southern Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The type locality is at 1,900-2,000m asl. It is said to be common. It is a species of montane grasslands that presumably breeds by direct development. There is no direct information on threats to the species, but it is not likely Ansonia hanitschi Inger, 1960 to be seriously threatened. It is not known from any protected areas. Taxonomy: We follow Poynton (2003c) in retaining the genus Schoutedenella only for Schoutedenella xenochirus, and we therefore assign This Bornean endemic occurs at a number of sites within Kinabalu National Park, and the Crocker Range south of this species to its original genus, Arthroleptis. There are major taxonomic problems with the genera Arthroleptis and Schoutedenella Kinabalu in Sabah, in Gunung Mulu Park in Sarawak, and also in the montane forests of Kalimantan. -

During repeated visits in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010, we found large numbers of dead frogs around the lake shore, as well as a higher than expected prevalence of diseased frogs. No significant rela- tionships between disease occurrence and environmental parameters were found, with the excep- tion of a significant but unexplained association between phosphate concentration and disease incidence. -

(1998) and the two lists of fossil taxa of this group of E (1981) and S (1998), or absent from these five lists.The period covered by these additions starts in 1981 for taxa of fossil gymnophiones and urodeles, in 1993 for taxa of recent amphibians, and in 1998 for taxa of fossil anurans. It ends on 31 December 2002 for all these groups.We tried to include all new nomina that had been overlooked in the lists cited above, or for which we identified errors in these lists. However, nomina of lower recent taxa anterior to 1993 not considered in F’s (1985) and D’s (1993) checklists (i.e., most synonyms and most nomina of valid subgenera and subspe- cies) were not included, as their inclusion would have increased the present list by hundreds, if not thousands, of nomina.
