    Comparative Sociology 16 (2017) 716-745 COMPARATIVE SOCIOLOGY brill.com/coso National Identity after a Conflict: National Identity Choice among Northern Irish Youth Natasha Bingham Assistant Professor, Loyola University New Orleans, USA [email protected] Christopher Duffy Loyola University New Orleans, USA [email protected] Abstract This work uses multinomial logistic regression to explore how Northern Irish youth view their national identity and the factors that shape their self-identification post- 1998 Good Friday Agreement. We use the 2005-2015 Northern Ireland Young Life and Times Surveys of 16-year-olds to investigate these questions. The results indicate that intergroup contact is less influential than environmental factors on national identity. Residential and school composition has more of an effect on solidifying Irish identity than British identity (relative to that of a Northern Irish identity). Our work adds to the literature on national identity development and choice among young adults in post- conflict and post-peace-agreement environments. Keywords national identity – post-conflict nationalism – religion and nationalism – youth identity development – Northern Ireland According to the 2011 census, the number of individuals who identified as Catholic was 45 per cent and those who identified as Protestant was 48 per cent (Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency 2011). The right to life is undoubtedly the most precious and fundamental Human Right we are entitled to. It should surpass all other Human Rights regardless of their status. In the early hours of 14th September 1986, John Bingham had this fundamental Human Right taken from him when a PIRA murder gang invaded the sanctity of his home and riddled him with bullets. There are a number of factors surrounding the murder of John Bingham that need investigation, factors that suggest serious failings in the police investigation at best and a full-blown cover-up at worst. Ulidia Legacy and Educational Trust are determined to bring all of the aspects of John Bingham’s murder to light. We are also determined to pursue the hidden truths that have been concealed from the public – and in particular the loved ones of victims – for years, thus adding to their suffering. We are often reminded that we are living in a post-conflict era. It has been 23 years since the CLMC ceasefire and 20 years since the PIRA ceasefire. We feel the truth has been hidden for long enough and that a vacuum has been created that has been filled with rumour, speculation and outright lies.     FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST Request Number: F2011 03347 Keyword: Crime Subject: Information on the Ulster Volunteer Force Request and Answer: Questions I am currently writing a book on the Ulster Volunteer Force, an illegal terrorist grouping operating in Northern Ireland, and would like to request information held by the PSNI about the organisation under the Freedom of Information Act. In particular I am interested in accessing information on the following individuals: Augustus 'Gusty' Spence, David Ervine, William 'Billy' Mitchell, William 'Billy' McCaughey, William 'Billy' Greer, Leonard 'Lenny' Murphy, William 'Billy' Moore, Hugh McClean, John Bingham, William 'Frenchie' Marchant and Trevor King. All of the aforementioned individuals were arrested, charged and imprisoned at various times in the 1970s and 1980s. They are all deceased. I would be interested, particularly, in accessing police files and photographs of these individuals. I would also like to seek information on the activities of the UVF during the 'troubles'. Some of the high-profile acts of violence perpetrated by the organisation include: the Dublin and Monaghan bombings (17 May 1974), the Miami Showband killings (31 July 1975), Boyle's Bar, Cappagh, incident (3 March 1991), and the Loughinisland killings (18 June 1994). I would be extremely grateful if you could inform me of the extent of your holdings on the UVF and how many active investigations are pending related to the organisation. I would also like to know if the PSNI has a record of the number of UVF members and suspected members arrested, charged and prosecuted between 1966 and 2011. Answer Section 17(5) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 requires the Police Service of Northern Ireland, when refusing to provide such information (because the cost of compliance exceeds the appropriate limit) to provide you the applicant with a notice which states that fact.

Applying economic theories of competition to the production of violence by terrorist or other VPOs yields considerable insight into their strategic behavior. Subversive groups cannot survive and continue to operate without a reservoir of political support, both active and passive, within the constituent base they claim to represent. These constituents exchange their support for the groups‘ violence when it is perceived to advance a preferred political agenda. However, violence also generates opposition from those constituents who perceive violence to be misguided, counter-productive or illegitimate. VPOs seek to maintain or increase their power within the constituent community by choosing the type and amount of violence that maximizes support and minimizes opposition. As such, VPOs are subject to the same forces of supply, demand and competition as firms in a market. Indeed, a qualitative time-series analysis of Republican groups in Northern Ireland finds typical market strategies employed, including attempts at product branding, productive outbidding, and reductions in violence by monopolistic groups.
